Effective water purification
For me it's just not getting sick. I'll regularly use it while hunting/hiking to drink out of streams/rivers (to include a major state river), and lakes.
water storage hey y'all,
I did JMT SOBO last August with just 2x 1L SmartWater bottles. Unless Guthook (or the rangers) says the reliable water sources have run dry this year due to it being unusually low rainfall, or it is a crazy heat wave like last week, or you have abnormally high water consumption, you should be fine.
Pump water filters - who still uses them? Whenever I look up water purification, I feel like most posts or reviews these days deal with the BeFree/Sawyer type filters.
Easy to use and portable
Super easy to use, good life span, easy to find replacements.
It weighs almost nothing and just makes camp life better.
Good lifespan and replacement availability
it’s up to personal preference!

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Mention of various portable water filters.
I will check out all of these. Y’all are awesome!
Discussion on water filtration system preferences
Best water system Looking to get water purification system for survival.
Can it filter water? Yes. Does it? Sure, usually.
Sawyer squeeze, bleach or aqua Mira drops have always been my go to.
If you are on the move, one of the many backpacking water filters from Sawyer, Katadyn, or MSR are great.
Mention of specific filters and systems used
Works really well for me.
The KHP on the other hand turns that tea into water.
My best choice is a Platypus gravity filter.
Katadyn Hiker Pro, the filter in the OP.
General praise for Sawyer products over others
nothing is going to last a “lifetime” without the ability to extensively clean and easily replace components.
User experiences with filter durability
You're not supposed to shock, drop, bend or crush the flimsy plastic case of the Lifestraw otherwise the filter media gets separated from the inside of the case and it will pass unfiltered water easily.
Discussion on water purification methods
It depends on two factors: The amount of water you need to purify, like for a group, or if your water drops are so far apart that you need to carry a lot of water.
Pump filters are geared for larger groups instead of single person use, where the effort made is a benefit instead of a deficiency.
Personally for muddy/foul water I just use a prefilter. Worst case a shirt or a sock will do.
Base camp locations. If you’ve got a water source a mile from camp and don’t want to hike to it twice each day, you can pump a lot quickly and carry it back to camp.
General praise for various water filters
Beyond testing standards, I don't really understand the difference between filter types here super well (simple explanations welcomed).
None of those store bought mainstream filters last very long compared to a 10x2.5 cartridge.
This is why I’m inclined to seek out NSF/ANSI rated and independently tested solutions that meet a certain standard, rather than flying blind.
Any carbon filter should also reduce lead.

Comparison with other brands
Water purifier straws. Does anyone have any experience with the Membrane brand water purification straws on Amazon?
Go with the Sawyer - best in class 8 years running.
Sawyer is by far the best for water treatment and insect repellent and sunscreen.
Sawyer squeeze, my friend. Lasted me the whole PCT (2,653 mile hike) and I’m still using it.
Discussion on personal preferences for water filtering systems
I mostly care about value and longevity instead of just being the lightest weight.
The additional step of an squeeze bag is unnecessary.
It's super easy to clean (no back flushing, just swish it or shake it), and you can unscrew the flip top and connect it to a gravity system easily.
You can’t back flush a ~QuickDraw~ EDIT[Befree]. They have a great flow rate when new, but the swish method for clearing the filter is pretty useless on trail.
Guidance on carrying water supplies in areas with limited sources
There is, however, an outdoor spigot at the North Fork Volunteer Fire Department building about 200 yards northwest of the CT at mile 10.1 of Segment 2.
Did you check the Colorado Trail Foundation website?
Water availability on trails is generally good.
Water sources on the JMT seem plentiful, making water capacity less of a concern.
2 1 liters bottles is totally enough. Really only need 1 1 liter, water is everywhere.
Even in a drought year you do not need more than two- 1L Smart Water bottles, and most of the time you’ll only need to have one filled at any given time.
You’ll be fine with that. Water isn’t a problem.
Discussion on preferences for gravity vs. pump systems
I still can’t get over how amazing it is.
I will never use a pump again for camping.
Gravity is way better than a pump unless you’re in a hurry.
Concerns about water availability on trails
are there segments over 10 miles with no access to water?
Once you start segment 2, there’s no water and good shade is near impossible to find.
without this tank or doing a mile round trip down to Baldy lake at 289, you're looking at 22 miles here.
I believe there is a 22-mile stretch in the San Juans without water.
Comparison to Lifestraw and other filters
However it is expensive and the filters are only good for 150L or 300 uses.
Lifestraws are crap. The cheap, thin plastic case doesn't provide enough protection to the filter medium and can easily be damaged to cause the filter medium to not be sealed or safe to the case.
Avoid lifestraw at all cost. During a two week trip a friend damaged his lifestraw in his ruck but didn't notice.
Comparison with Sawyer filters
My experience they do a better job and they are more versatile.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
User experiences with Sawyer products
Regular Sawyer all day though!
Maybe I'm just a strong sucker.
Looking to invest in a great buy it for life water filter for drinking water.
General praise for Sawyer products over others.
Sawyer is great. The filters are compact and filter lots of water
Yup! Sawyer mini for the win!
Grayl water bottle is my new favorite, also bring a sawyer squeeze as a back up.
Gravity works platypus
Discussion on water conditions along trails affected by livestock
I ended up both filtering and chemically treating through there and had no issues.
General water safety preparation discussion
Can you speak to the bleach/water preparation to create a safe solution?
General discussions on water conditions and safety
I’ll die with a pack full of impeccably clean water though.
Discussion on Lifestraw limitations
the design sucks
They are designed to be a straw, this is not always good.
General discussion on water filtration systems
I’m glad we got the one we did as it’s great when a lot of people need it.
There's plenty on YouTube.
