Snoop's Take

The Amazon Fire 7 Kids tablet is a compact, kid-friendly device designed specifically for children ages 3-7. It offers a dedicated media consumption experience with parental controls and a robust, kid-proof build that ensures safety and durability. Consumer feedback is a mixed bag: many applaud its unbeatable value and the bonus Amazon Kids subscription, with one user remarking, 'I tell all new parents to start with this tablet, it’s been great for us.' However, detractors have nothing but criticism for its sluggish performance, limited creative functionality and a cluttered interface that leaves little room for productivity. Overall, opinions underscore that while the tablet is perfect for streaming and educational content, it falls short as a multi-functional device. In conclusion, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly, media-first tablet for kids with sound parental controls and a tough build, the Fire 7 Kids tablet is recommended within its niche. But if you require versatility and robust performance for productivity or creative uses, you might want to look elsewhere.

Positive Feedback

I think my issue comes from the restrictions built into the Amazon Kids web browser; it doesn't seem to matter if I add xbox.com & microsoft.com to the list of allowed sites.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Free Amazon Kids subscription adds value
You get a free year of Amazon Kids, so that's cool.
Great value for money
Overall, the tablets are the best bang for the buck on the market, hands down.
strip that away and you'll get a tablet that is the best bang for your buck.
Great value for media content consumption
It was great for this consumption.
Fire tablets are good for what they were actually designed for.
Media consumption
Effective parental controls for limiting content
I tell all new parents to start with this tablet, it’s been great for us.
You can use the Amazon kids parent dashboard to limit or add games/videos that are included with Amazon kids too which is really helpful!
There's no Internet browser, no YouTube, no YouTube kids, I can set that he does educational content before games or movies, we love it.
Robust 2‐year warranty covering issues (including water damage)
And the 2 year warranty even covers water damage!
Second year and it’s perfect.
Kid‐friendly design with protective bumpers
They come with these bad ass protective bumpers.

Kids' profile issues affecting app login
I think my issue comes from the restrictions built into the Amazon Kids web browser; it doesn't seem to matter if I add xbox.com & microsoft.com to the list of allowed sites.
Lacks cellular data connectivity
I have a fire but it only connects to wifi, it can't access the data portion of our plan.
Missing On Deck feature on Kids Editions
Does anyone know why Fire HD Tablets would not have On Deck?
I swear I went to both spots you said and I simply don't have On Deck!
Not user-friendly with limited parental controls
It’s not user friendly and doesn’t have the parental controls an iPad has.
Cluttered, non-customizable home screen
Yes, it's annoying because the default home screen is super busy and crowded.
What a bummer.
Sluggish performance due to preinstalled bloatware
Ours ran so slow and I didn't understand because my nephew has one he is on all the time.
Inferior specs and slow performance
Fire tablets slow down after awhile, and ruin microsd cards.
fire tablets are cheap bottom end devices.
Compared to regular android tablets available for a similar price they are petty garbage.
Unstable software
Good hardware ruined by horrible, unstable software.
Lacks native Google Play support and promotes ecosystem lock-in
They sell at a subsidized price so that you buy them and spend money on their services throughout the life of the tablet.
Cluttered, non‑customizable home screen
Why would anyone want this in their kids tablet!?
Most likely the issue is that when you order the device originally you apparently designate an age range and this changes the programming of the device.
the worst part is, it’s the crazy busy screen and my kids are overwhelmed.
All in all, only one child was able to access the subscription.
Limited productivity functionality
Fire OS is really designed for media consumption rather than productivity work.
Apps require frequent re-download
My only complaint is that you have to re-download the games in the app frequently.
Unreliable parental controls that reset or can be bypassed
This is just too many close calls.
Unfortunately I wouldn’t go thinking that spending money on iPads is going to solve your issues!
At no point did they flag that the pin was bypassed.
I would spend literally an hour to remove all the apps that Amazon Kids put on there that I didn't approve of.
Overly restrictive child profiles limiting functionality
The child profiles are ridiculously restrictive so if you want to do anything more than what they let you you have to let your child use the Adult profile.
Lack of Alexa support
There's a reason they are cheap.
Poor SD card functionality and limited accessibility
For kid safety, theyre perfect.
the SD card interface is so slow that installing any apps on it will lead them to hang indefinitely.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Review bias and competitor comparisons
What I don't understand is why so many review sites recommend these as the top choice for kids.
Thanks, seems that the Fire isn't the best option, Lemovo and Samsung are the best and aren't too expensive.
Versatile usage as a smart display beyond standard tablet functions
show mode is a fantastic feature. For the money, they can't be beat imo.
fire tablet and show mode definitely shouldn't be slept on.

you can install the play store in about 5 minutes and install the YouTube app from there.
You can easily install the play store and use them as a generic Android tablet.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
General drawing tablet recommendations (Wacom, Bamboo, Huion)
The Wacom Intuos tablet is one of the best entry-level tablets if you're looking for something to get started with.
Bamboo series is cheaper while Intuos is a bit pricier but has more features.
OP here, anyone have experience with this?
Challenges with central management of Amazon devices
I quickly realized it was a pit of quicksand and announced that I wasn't supporting Amazon products in any way after the end of that year.
No Amazon devices allowed period on our network unless they want to connect them to guest.
Kid-friendly app recommendations
the pbs kids tv and pbs kids games apps are great content and free!
Khan Academy Kids is fun! There is a variety of activities that focus on learning.
The Sago Mini apps are very friendly for littles.
Discussion on affordable pricing and market dominance of Amazon tablets
IIRC Amazon has the largest marketshare of Android tablets in the US.
when you can get a virtually unbreakable tablet wrapped in foam for your kids for ~$40 it's pretty hard to justify an iPad at 10x the price.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Restrictions on sideloading and limited browser options
Isn't Amazon making it tough to side load on things like the FireTVStick?
Security and performance concerns of off-brand Android tablets
Uugghhh ok that answers my question. So absolutely not log in with any personal accounts period, make a burner Google account and use it strictly for entertainment.
No. Generic Android tablets often come with misleading specs.
I don't even believe in big names, let alone off-brand tablets lol.
Quality control (both hardware and software) is the thing to be worried about with these off brand tablets.
