Snoop's Take

The Dorman 902-1001 Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing is designed as a direct replacement for original housings in select Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury models. This durable part is built to endure extreme temperatures while preventing leaks, making it a reliable choice for vehicle maintenance. Consumer feedback highlights several strengths of the Dorman thermostat housing, particularly its affordability and effective performance compared to OEM parts. Many users have expressed satisfaction with its installation process, noting that it was a straightforward "direct swap" and that they have experienced no leaks after installation, stating, "I never had to use a drop of silicone for the housings or the crossover pipe and no leaks at all." Overall, the Dorman 902-1001 is highly recommended for those seeking a cost-effective and reliable replacement thermostat housing. While some users have raised concerns about the durability of plastic versions, the positive sentiment towards Dorman's aluminum options suggests a trustworthy alternative for preventing leaks.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Affordable alternative to dealer parts
So far so good.
Thermostat housings? Which do you recommend and why? And how long has it lasted you?
I went with an A-Premium aluminum thermostat housing and haven't had any leaks in about 5k miles, so I'm past the bad reviews milage where it just didn't seal at all.
I've driven 10Kish miles since with no issues.
Dorman parts effectively address OEM issues
They are basically the only company left that make's good parts for this car.
Personally I am glad they are around making what they make.
If I was going to get a plastic housing and thermostat I would certainly use oem / motorcraft.
Decent pricing for replacement parts
the Prices are decent enough to make it not seem like they just want to gouge people for the privilege to have decent parts for their cars.
Easy direct swap installation
It’s was a tight fit getting it in there but was pretty straight forward direct swap.
No leaks reported with other housings
I never had to use a drop of silicone for the housings or the crossover pipe and no leaks at all.
Positive recommendation for use in similar models
I would highly recommend
Affordable replacement option found on Amazon
Cracked thermostat housing on '91 Suzuki Carry So this weekend I was replacing my radiator and thermostat in my carry, and I torqued down the bolts on the upper thermostat housing too hard and cracked it :(
I wish measurements would be posted.
Dorman offers aluminum version as an alternative
Motorcraft for a normal replacement, dorman makes an aluminum version.
Forget the plastic - GET THE ALUMINUM. Money well spent.
Dorman is a reliable choice for thermostat assemblies
Some cheap knockoffs have bad seals. Dorman or acdelco professional series is the way 2 go.
Metal housings prevent leaks
Yes, the metal water outlet (thermostat) housings will prevent this problem from happening again.
Make sure it comes with a new sensor. Metal is probably better.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Limited perceived value in the housing
Don't really see too much value in the housing. Never had a housing go bad.
Previous experience with leaking or failure
Mine actually went bad. Tiny pin hole. Buy a new one, naw. JB weld to the rescue!
Plastic cracks over time and leaks
Seems like all the plastic ones crack.
I replaced three before getting the aluminum one.
Get the aluminum one. DO NOT install a plastic thermostat housing. It will always leak.
Concerns about sealing with metal housings
Sounds like yours is stuck open.
Concerns over plastic housing durability
The only thing i hope they get around to making for the LS is a replacement for the plastic Thermostat housing, as that is THE biggest failure point on that car.
Inconsistent quality for non-problem-solving parts
Dorman has a few good parts. Usually, when they make something that's intended to solve a problem with an OE design, they're solid.
Concerns about durability of plastic housing
Dorman, from my experience, is not a reliable brand
Previous experiences with leaking issues
My MITZONE is sitting in my trunk because ai can't get it to seal and haven't had time to 'fix' that yet.
Concerns about plastic housing durability
Unreliable plastic thermostat housings for the 2014 1.4 lt, is there any sort of thermostat thats available to buy anywhere that has a stronger housing, maybe one out of metal?
Plastic replacements are not recommended due to durability
Do not get the plastic replacement. Find the alluminum one.
Frequent leaks reported with plastic housing
Have installed same new 2013 sonic 1.4 thermostat housing (from Amazon) twice now and it leaks right where chrome steel pipe connects w/ 2 bolts at front of housing.
Replacing individual pieces is asking for it to leak because of the loose tolerances/cheap materials.
A better quality part might be the solution.
