What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Reliable replacement parts availability
I have zero regrets with mine
Great for outdoor cooking
Buy this for life.
Effective for long-lasting use with propane tanks
Works great and lasts a long time.
Same. I switched to the 5lb tank, primarily for my portable BBQ, but when I bring out the Coleman, I just use the 5lb with an adapter.
You can find the flame king kit cheaper if you shop around.
what im wondering is, the refill kit flame king has is >50 bucks. it has a stand for the tank and a valve with a lever.
Good durability over time
Probably worth a try! My current camp stove is about 23 years old and works fine.
Cost-effective with refillable tanks
Way cheaper to refill them than buy disposable ones too.
Way easier, and fills up for maybe $3.
Cost-effective option compared to competitors
Consider just buying the flame king instead. It's virtually the same.
Outside of that for full price, I would go Flame King and save $40.
Reliable performance over multiple years
I’ve been using the flame king for four years now with no issues.
Lightweight and portable design
I am extremely happy with my Lopi Medium Flush NegGen Hybrid.
Good heat output for cooking
This is the model the salesperson suggested for me. Medium and Large. I want the large.
The king requires an 8" pipe.
Effective wind protection while cooking
75% HHV efficiency is required to qualify for the tax rebate.
All the Blaze King products are fabulous! The Princess is a great stove that will give you long burn times.
Great for portable cooking setup
Portable stove for cooking not boiling
Makes your life easier. You get a lot more cooking area.
Compact and lightweight design for outdoor use
My Ashford insert has been plenty to heat my ~2k sq ft in the mid-Atlantic with about 10 hour burn times, but I lust after the 40 hour burns of the King…
Great for cooking while camping
You guys have been a huge help in my build!
Those stoves are no joke and allow you to actually cook (boil, sear, or simmer)
Reliability of refillable tanks
The refillable flame King tank has to be filled upright in order for the bleed valve to work properly and for the tank to be filled.
Convenient for camping and outdoor cooking
a portable stove largely because fires are restricted in many areas throughout each season, and it’s super convenient.
Nothing is more frustrating for me than having to start a fire in the morning before making my coffee.
A portable stove is a much better and consistent option.
Reliable heat source compared to fires
Fires are not a reliable heat source unless they are sheltered.
Convenient refill system for propane bottles
the leftover propane still in the partly-used bottles is reused and not wasted.
Good on them.
Adaptability for larger propane tanks
Almost any appliance that uses the 1lb can be adapted to use a 20lb just by using a hose adapter.
Cost-effective propane options
Yeah, no. That's crazy expensive. I can get a 20 pound refill for about $30 here in central Maryland, about $110 if I'm purchasing the tank, too.
I did this exact same thing. Cosco online for the tank @ $50 and bought the couzie which came with the converter hose for $59 from Amazon.
Provides protection of the flame while cooking
The housing provides some protection of the flame making them pretty safe.
Efficient cooking performance, boils water quickly
I have the Coleman 2 burner stove and really like it. It gets water boiling pretty fast.
Versatile cooking options with grill and burner
Works fine.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Potential gas leaks with vintage models
Some vintage stoves like this can constantly leak low levels of natural gas in your home.
Complexity in learning to use properly
If a phd in this stove takes two weeks. I'm all over it. Mine took 6 years
Safety concerns with DIY refilling
If you're looking to buy new/used (the tech is many generations old), you might consider something that runs on white gas and/or a multi-fuel option.
Potential safety issues with gas leaks
This is a list of good stoves that have been tested and are approved to be on the list.
Complex setup and operation
Blaze King thermostatically controlled catalytic stoves, and soapstone hybrid and catalytic stoves from Woodstock and Hearthstone are all going to fall into the category of lower output, longer burning, softer heat output wood burners well suited to smaller spaces and/or lower heating demands, with the ability to spread out the heat from a load of wood over 10-16+ hours.
Potential gas leaks with older models
We have small visible flames for the first hour or two of every burn, and at least glowing logs that are nice to look at for all but the last hour or two.
Potential complexity in setup and operation
They’re both cheaper and more convenient even if they weigh a bit more.
Canister stoves may provide uneven heat
Little canister stoves are better for boiling water than for cooking cooking.
Potential issues with gas connection tightness
if its not tight enough to the canister, sometimes it can turn off once it heats up halfway through cooking and you'll need to retighten it.

Looks a bit tippy though.

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.

I like it. It replaced a 30 year old Coleman.
Preference for using both stove and fire
Personally I enjoy cooking dinner on the fire, but breakfast on a stove (usually can’t be bothered to make a fire in the morning).

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

Discussion on various propane tank options
What is the best refillable propane cylinders for Coleman stoves? I don't want to keep buying cylinders.
The classic 20LB tank from the gas station / UHaul is the obvious answer.
Flame king makes a [3 lb tank and adapter kit.](https://flamekingproducts.com/collections/propane-tanks/products/flame-king-propane-gas-hauler-kit-3lb-propane-tank-adapter-hose-and-insulated-protective-carry-case). I switched to a [5 lb tank](https://flamekingproducts.com/collections/propane-tanks/products/flame-king-propane-gas-hauler-kit-5lb-propane-tank-adapter-hose-and-insulated-protective-carry-case) years ago and it works great.
They also have refillable 5 lb tanks. You can take them to most hardware stores and have them refilled but call first and ask.
Availability of the product at various price points
Costco also has the Flame King for $50 online
Discussion on propane tank compatibility
This is a list of good stoves that have been tested and are approved to be on the list.
Discussion on compatible gas canisters for vintage stoves
Self sealing butane propane seems to be the consensus but hoping to get it right first time!
they look like the original one on your stove but just have a different way to fit them, they have a little notch which holds it in place
Discussion on various propane tank sizes
We really like how low the flame will go without going out - something I hear a lot of people complain about on newer stoves.
It would last forever only I 2 way it to my camp chef 3 burner with griddle it would last 3 4 nights.
Discussion about pricing and availability of propane tanks
The Ignik growler is literally a flame king 5lb tank.
If you have the time, piece it together and save $40.
tested for a few minutes on my Coleman stove ... all good.
Discussion about preferences for different types of camping stoves
With fire bans happening more frequently it made me second guess if I should get the 2 burner.
Perfect for breakfast pancakes, eggs, bacon on the griddle, and it's ready for the dinner burgers, chicken, steak on the grill.
I like them both but I would prefer the butane burners.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Mention of thrift store finds
Available sometime at thrift stores.
Personal experiences with different propane stoves
I strap them down. I connect it when needed.
Discussion on propane suppliers and cylinder manufacturers
What brand of Propane? I recently purchased a portable propane stove for camping. I live in CA and decided to be proactive in case of fire bans.
No matter the name stamped on the outside of the cylinder (except for Flame King) they are made by Worthington.
Try skipping those swap cages, as they sometimes under-fill. Look for your local, independent propane station and have them fill it in front of you, on a scale.
