What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Effective for catching letdown while nursing
The Haakaa suctions to your breast to collect milk that leaks out while the Medela requires you to actually pump by hand.
Like others have said, I’m getting both! Hakaa for catching letdown, manual pump for stimulation and relieving engorgement.
The Haakaa does act as a breast pump. Just suction it on and the milk starts dripping! You will have to manually start the letdown by self expressing but it does work pretty well.
Glad to hear the hand pump and haakaa was enough.
Effective when used with nursing
I still prefer it to pumping.
I needed to be nursing to trigger letdown, too! In the beginning I could easily get 4 oz in a feed but only if LO was nursing on the other side.
Definitely need a letdown to get it to work.
Useful for catching letdown
I’ve never gotten more than a few drops from mine no matter what I tried 😩
I collect 1-2.5 oz per letdown. without a letdown, maybe like 10 mL in 10 minutes lol.
Can be used creatively for hand expressing
I use it as a basin for hand expressing some milk. It works better for me than other cups or bowls.
Effective for relieving engorgement
I do this too- mainly in the morning after he’s slept through. I do the Haakaa on each side (as little as possible so he gets enough milk) to take the edge off.
Hands-free operation while nursing
I used the haakaa a ton but only used a manual pump once.
Good for collecting leakage during nursing
are good to have too for collecting leakage during nursing.
Recommended for effective milk collection
Depends on your lifestyle. I definitely recommend the hakaa.
Compact and easy to store
a lot of insurance companies give you a pump if you have a prescription for it without paying a hefty out of pocket fee
Good for catching letdown while nursing
It's good for putting on the breast you are not feeding on however it doesn't replace a pump by any means
Comfortable for larger breasts
I find the petal more comfortable. It seems to even out the pressure.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Limited effectiveness for users with low letdown
it didn't do much at all.
Less useful as baby grows and becomes more active
Overall, I'd say the manual pump gave me more results than the hakaa, but not as much as the electric pump.
The hakaa was only useful for the first few months until babe started moving around a lot more.
Limited effectiveness without nursing
Only works for me when baby is nursing on the other side or if I am EXTREMELY engorged.
May not catch enough milk for some users
Everyone raves about it but I can’t figure it out
Limited use compared to manual pumps
I had a spare manual pump (medela harmony). I could fit the entire pump in a quart size ziploc bag, and kept it in my purse.
