Snoop's Take

The Humminbird 410190-1 HELIX 5 SONAR G2 Fish Finder is an advanced sonar device engineered to pinpoint fish and map underwater structures with precision. It features a 5" widescreen display, DualBeam PLUS and SwitchFire Sonar modes, ensuring that anglers get a detailed and versatile underwater view. User feedback reveals a mixed bag of opinions with enthusiasts applauding its fish finding prowess while grumbling about its bulky design and clunky chart plotter interface. One user summed it up perfectly, stating, "it's been an excellent piece of gear. Would buy again!" Yet, debates persist over its unwieldiness on smaller boats and the absence of a side scan feature, creating a vibrant community discussion that underscores both its strengths and shortcomings. Overall, for anglers who can accommodate a heftier setup in exchange for advanced sonar capabilities and integrated GPS, the Helix 5 comes highly recommended within its category despite some design imperfections.

they are very nice (specifically due to having mega 360 imaging) the rest of the features are lackluster.

Positive Feedback

I'm debating keeping the Helix for one of my loaner kayaks because it feels unwieldy on the smaller ones.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Excellent fish finding capability
they are very nice (specifically due to having mega 360 imaging) the rest of the features are lackluster.
humminbird does great at finding fish but the “chart plotter” interface is absolute garbage.
Recommended Helix 5 with integrated GPS
Humminbird helix 5 with gps.
Drop the extra hundo at some point and get the LakeMaster chip. Between that and scouting on Navionics website it’ll change your game.
Positive performance and reliability of Humminbird fish finders
it's been an excellent piece of gear. Would buy again!
Put the helix 7 si/gps on my boat this year. Love it so far, no problems.

Bulky design and unwieldy size compared to competitors
I'm debating keeping the Helix for one of my loaner kayaks because it feels unwieldy on the smaller ones.
I've used my buddy's Helix 9 before and you are correct .. that MFer is huge overall.
This is a terrible comparison, using the cover of the garmin gives no clear picture on what the screen looks like.
What is it still "depends". Seems like the Garmin is the winner if you get approximately the same screen size in a smaller package.
Missing side scan feature
But, anyone feel like the side scan is a game changer?
Yes. Yes. 1000 times yes.
I heard a couple people say they didn’t see it’s worth which kinda made me second guess it, but I feel like it could save me so much time.
I'll never buy a fish finder without sidescan. It is absolutely a game changer, and I think a kayak is an optimal vessel for it.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
General fish finder functionality for depth and structure detection
It's primary purpose is displaying the depth and rate of depth change so you can be more informed about where and how to fish, secondary to that would be displaying any other structure you would never know existed.
I like to spend cash on gear and I do ok, but my buddy is a pretty good fisherman and I watch him pull up fish after fish with a $40 Ugly Stik GX2.
Side imaging and larger display benefits
Side imaging is awesome, it is absolutely 100% a meaningful upgrade.
Side imaging was a game changer for me, helped identify cover, bottom composition changes etc.
Side imaging is huge.
Ooh, I like that arrangement on the screen.
Humminbird products outperform competitors
I am very happy with my HB Helix 7 Mega SI G3 - I hated my Lowrance Hook Reveal 7.
I love my HB Helix 7 Mega SI G3.
I have the same one and love it 👍

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Older basic models not worth repurposing solely for mounting
I wouldn't go finding an old unit just to use a mounting point, as they all come with mounting stuff, just FYI OP, unless you think you can find one cheap/free.
I agree with the other guy don't waste your time with that guy just cause the mount is already there.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Budget fish finder recommendations favoring the Garmin Striker series
While I don’t think it helped me catch fish that I actually saw on the radar, it did help me identify cover/structure that I wasn’t previously aware of.
I'd say that the difference between no fishfinder and a cheap one is bigger than between a cheap and an expensive one.
Go with the striker it is the best unit you are going to find in that price range.
The Garmin Striker is a solid pick.
Garmin customer service is highly praised
I called and they one day shipped a brand new transducer for free with almost no questions asked.
Garmin has taken care of me a few times, above and beyond their warranty.
Price and budget trade‑offs among fish finders
I found the Garmin Echomap UHD 73sv to be the best bang for my money, as it had all of the technologies you mention, as well as a touchscreen interface and some excellent fishing charts.
The two I would recommend are just outside your desired budget.
I'm not aware of ANY side scan units for $400.
Then your gonna save for a bigger screen, once you use side scan and any other option that makes you run 2 screens, your gonna love it at first.
Battery capacity recommendations for Helix 5 setups
7 Amp-Hour Sealed Lead Acid battery should be fine.
Now that I am running 3 finders as well as a livescope, I have switched to a larger lithium 60 ah setup.
Recommendation of Helix 7 as a better option under $800
Yes helix 7 is the shit.
Humminbird helix 7 imo
They're pretty expensive so with that budget the best option would be the Hummingbird Helix 7.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Power and charging concerns for battery setups
Like the panels would have to be prohibitively large in order to get the job done.
If the panel sits outside and you use it once a week it’s fine.
I go on long camping/fishing trips sometimes and it’d be cool to at least keep a 50% charge going for a few days.
