Snoop's Take

The REOLINK 4K Security Camera System, RLK16-800B8, is a comprehensive surveillance solution delivering near 4K Ultra HD clarity and intelligent person/vehicle detection. Engineered for 24/7 recording with a plug-and-play PoE setup, it promises round-the-clock security with robust storage and remote access capabilities. User sentiment is polarizing yet informative, with enthusiasts hailing its crisp imaging and rapid app performance. One reviewer declared, "I have 3 cameras and a solar panel from Reolink that was the same cost as a single camera from Nest and every single camera is better quality and resolution," capturing the value-for-money discussion. While many praise its user-friendly setup and integrated mobile app, others critique its UPnP vulnerabilities and outdated software interface. These debates underscore a system that excels in visual fidelity and seamless installation but isn’t without its operational quirks. In sum, the REOLINK 4K Security Camera System is recommended for those prioritizing high-resolution surveillance and reliable continuous recording, provided they can tolerate occasional software hiccups and integration challenges.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Better image quality and resolution
I have 3 cameras and a solar panel from reolink that was the same cost as a single camera from Nest and every single camera is better quality and resolution.
Good value for money
Good value cameras for the money
I think its tough to go wrong with reolink from a bang for your buck perspective.
Easy setup and user-friendly
I've found that the Reolink NVR and POE cameras are really as stable as I had hoped and a breath of fresh air compared to my last system (Lorex). Never once had any issues.
If it's set it and forget it, get a kit with an NVR. It's the easiest path, and you'll remain in the reolink ecosystem with no need for integrating other technologies.
Multi-platform client support
Yes they have a client you can install on Mac/Windows and an app for iOS/Android.
High image quality and reliable camera performance
I just really like their cameras.
Not expensive and good image quality.
Glad to hear I picked a good brand.
No subscription fees and great value for money
+1 reolink. No subscription.
the quality of the products for the price point is hard to believe.
Easy installation and setup
easy installation, and easy setup.
Excellent customer support
Reolink are fantastic. Their support is top notch too.
My experience with Reolink support was good.
User-friendly and reliable app
It just works and the clients actually use it. The apps are amazing.
No subscription fees & 24/7 recording with local storage
If you want static coverage, go Reolink for the price.
I hear you on avoiding subscriptions.
Easy installation with PoE
POE ethernet is great!
Convenient FTP upload backup integration
I set it up with the help of a techie using the FTP Upload feature in the Reolink app.
Unified app integration for mixed camera systems
The Reolink app is the more integrated one, if you have a mix of cameras connected to the nvr and standalone then one app sees them all.
Reliable local storage and app performance
Not a single camera or recording glitch. I only wish I had of thought of it earlier.
You can setup synology to record 24 x 7 and can use that as your app to watch or use the Reolink app.

Security vulnerabilities via UPnP/UID
I would like to have an explanation about the UPnP.
I was genuinely surprised at the random request from all of the IPs.
However, that seems to break the mobile app in that case, which is using this hole punching technique.
UPnP should not be used from a networking standpoint.
Limited functionality of Reolink NVR
I prefer my Synology NAS Surveillance Station over my parents Reolink NVR.
PC/Mac app is still under development
I would suggest to get the 36ch NVR, and buy all your cameras individually.
Remote viewing connection instability
if you want to try to use cameras from another manufacturer, you're gonna have a bad time.
PC client and NVR limitations (lag and no third-party camera support)
the client might start lagging after couple of hours and would need to restart.
Poor software interface and outdated software with security issues
I cannot tell you more much I dread it every time I have to go look through the history to find something. It's the worst.
> I cannot tell you more much I dread it every time I have to go look through the history to find so
the software is just for the birds. It’s so dated and has security holes.
Condensation issues on camera lenses after installation
I wouldn't have 20+ cameras if they weren't good quality.
The issue only comes up on initial install, it is not a constant issue.
Cumbersome initial deployment requiring extra logins and password changes
I wish their deployment was a little easier.
Concerns about budget build quality
Yes, there are always imperfections and things you wish for but in the real world, you won't find better.
Poor low light performance
Reolink is one of the worst performing IP cameras that I've seen in low light.
Camera technical instability, focus issues, and lack of RTSP support
That being said, I still use them - but I'll probably be replacing them with HIKVision or similar when they're done.
it feels like the hardware just wasn't designed with the higher throughputs in mind.
Lack of advanced AI features
None of them have the in depth AI features of commercial grade systems.
Poor integration with Synology Surveillance Station
I'm a bit annoyed I have so much invested and I've lost functionality.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Secure remote access using VPN workaround
I want locally stored (SD card or NVR) but accessible remotely without any cloud or the company I use having access to the video either.
The VPN safely separates the NVR from the internet.
Workaround for smart home integration via PoE switch
I can request any camera to be displayed in any room with a voice command.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Advanced network configuration strategies for PoE camera systems
Couldn't I buy a 16 channel POE switch like the one you linked...Then buy a cheaper Reolink NVR to save some money?
I don't fully trust Reolink to make secure devices, and one day Reolink will stop updates anyway.
Do they have to be managed switches or unmanaged?
Interest in switching from competitor systems
The Arlo cameras miss so many events it's not even funny. There's almost no point to having them.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Advocacy for non‑cloud systems enhances privacy
I'd always advocate for a non-cloud/sub based system every time, even if it means investing in a local machine to run everything.
