What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Helps develop balance skills
they grow with the child, so you won't have to worry about her outgrowing them quickly
Most people who buy $100 skates end up buying $60 wheels, $40 bearings and some bolts that fly off within a few weeks.
I don’t want to get her some that are going to be dangerous.
Regular skates are suitable for quick learners
Kids are usually pretty quick learners and will quickly grow out of the kind of skates that you describe.
Affordable option for beginners
I also think the $100 dollar skates are good to see if you even like skating in the first place, while still getting a fair amount of learning in them.
I see they have some weird trike looking skates that seems like a useless gimmick marketed at going kids.
My son is 12, daughter is 10. I need recommendations for beginner junior skates that won't break the bank.
Worth it!
Skates have good braking features
they have brakes behind each skate that will prevent them from falling backwards.
Adjustable skates are beneficial for beginners
Waited to see if they stuck with it or the novelty would wear off.
Suitable for beginner skaters
these will be fine to skate on.
Skates are durable and hold up well over time
The boot is perhaps a bit stiff as compared to something like the Moxi Lolly or Suregrip Boardwalks, but the ankle support is nice.
Even with being scuffed, theyre not shredded. I love my Candi’s.
Comfortable fit for various skating styles
Damn, I miss my Candi Girls!
Adjustable parts allow for customization
they work well for me with stability but i can obtain better versatility in my leand and turns/spins.
I love it for the adjustable toestop, and I have found a pair of slide blocks that will fit onto it so that I can do more at the skate parks.
Great for beginners
I have the disco skates and so far they have worked great!.
They seem great to me.
Some Roller Derby products have good features for beginners
You can't judge the entire product by the bottom brand offerings.
Candi Girls skates have a reinforced heel and toe
Hurts to hear anyone calling these amazing skates “novelty”
Adjustable skates can grow with the child
you can honestly invest in some size adjustable skates on amazon, there are some adorable ones too, so they’ll last a while and grow with her.
Adjustable sizing is beneficial for growing kids
Preferable not Fisher Price, and nothing too pricey, since they will grow out of them quickly.
This might be a good option.
Quads provide more stability
Quads provide *way* more stability, but you have to get used to skating on a boot with a heel.
Good for freestyle skating and skatepark use
which makes me think quads since they can dance, freestyle and grind rails.
Day 1 on skates was smoother than expected
day 1 was smoother than expected and I'm looking forward to getting better!

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Skates with bigger wheels in the back are not recommended
The ones with bigger wheels in the back are garbage.
Cheap skates may lead to bad experiences
If one "just dabbling" and has a crap experience because of the skates they got for "an amazon steal," is it worth the effort?
Need to upgrade from cheaper skates eventually
I think I would have just said “well, this is way too expensive of a hobby for me to try given that I don’t even know if I’ll like it, oh well” and that would have been that, which would be a bummer.
Skates can be dangerous and cause injuries
They were bloody useless ankle breakers.
Looks awfully dangerous.
Some Roller Derby skates are not intended for serious skating
I haven't skated Candi Girls personally, but from what Indy and Pigeon stated in their review video, I would say they seem like a decent skate for the price.
Boot detachment issues reported
Im looking to buy new skates and someone reccomend the candi girl carlins. Will they come undone the same way?
Overall if a more narrow boot is what you’re looking for and not trying to spend a ton I think they are a really good boot.
Chicago skates are considered dangerous
I've seen rinks that do not allow chicago skates in their rinks at all because they are that dangerous.
Seconded to everything this person has said.
Roller Derby brand perceived as a novelty brand
I do'nt know that they're NOT good skates, but I do know that there are higher quality, more reputable brands out there for people who already know they like skating and intend to stick with it.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Adjustable skates can grow with the child
My kid used crazy skates adjustable kids skate from 7 - 9.
Discussion on finding skates with adjustable toe stops
If you could find skates in her size with an adjustable toe stop, that is what you want.
Discussion on skate choices and brands
Her current skates are just the basic expandable sized ones from Amazon that are just about too small so we want to get her a nice pair.
See if you can order from a skate shop, rather than somewhere like Amazon if you can.
Discussion on skate upgrades and customization
Toe stops can be replaced with softer bolt-on ones.
Most pre-done skate sets have bland entry-level wheels and stops anyway.
Discussion about upgrading parts for better performance
I really like them. The wheels are quite wide and I have to be careful not to let them touch.
Commentary on changes in body image over time
The most amazing thing about old photos is you realize how fat we are now.
Discussion on personal experiences with different skates
DO NOT BUY THEM! For a similar price point you can get something much higher quality.

My daughters started at 3 with those toy inlines like Spider-Man and Frozen.
A girl in roller skates looks at a British soldier.
Wow. The absurd human situation. Children can naturally confront adults with their strange reality.
Mention of other brands and alternatives for kids
Decathlon is your friend in this context, they have a good selection of kids beginner skates and they all have urethane wheels too
Helpful article reference for buying roller skates
I'm considering this for my niece and I found this article helpful!
Discussion on transitioning to fixed size skates
The problem I have is having to replace them more frequently but at the same time I don't like the thought of putting her in more adjustable that are going to have a wonky wheelbase compared to what she's grown accustomed to since the base plates don't adjust.
Mention of secondhand skate options for affordability
Secondhand. Once they’re into “real” sizes (which 2.5 is), they need real skates.
Advice on lessons and age confirmations for junior teams
Do not, under any circumstances, buy the Roller Derby brand and expect her to be able to play roller derby in them.
Suggestions for buying secondhand skates as kids grow
Yey little derby babies joining the sport.
Recommendation against skates with heels for beginners
Make sure they do not have a heel.
Advice on skate selection for beginners
Almost all the newbies (including me) in my league have Reidell R3s.
Advice on finding secondhand skates
First check with the team when you join juniors there are other juniors who grew out of their gear and want to sell it.
Skepticism about cheaper skates and sizing confusion
they lasted until I was about 20 so good quality!
Comparison to higher-end brands
Moxie are the best but can be a little pricey.
Comparison of quads vs. inlines
Are you interested in roller derby? If so, learn quads, as you can only use inlines if you're reffing.
General advice for beginners interested in roller skating
Welcome to the weekly discussion thread! This is a place for quick questions and anything that might not otherwise merit its own post.
Discussion on different skate brands and their fit
Riedells are great but do tend towards the narrow side.
Loved my R3s for learning, but they do run narrow.
Advice on second-hand gear options for budget
For buying on a budget, keep an eye on Goodwill (either a local shop, or Goodwill Online is great).
Discussion on personal experiences with different skate styles
Considering purchasing the Crazy Disco Roller skates, are they actually any good?
Discussion on finding starter skates for kids
Basically we just want a good starter skate. Don't want to spend too much since shes going to grow out of them so quick.
This is the skate that my daughter and most of her team mates used as their first real derby skates.
The wheels on all of these entry level skates are terrible. So I'd advise you to look into a set of new wheels that are appropriate for the surface your kid skates on most regularly.
Nothing as nice as seeing a kid get a free pair of skates! I've seen a 7 year old be gifted a decent pair of Bont skates.
Discussion on the value of skates vs. price
Not everyone even has access to rental skates.
Comparative insights on personal experiences with different skates
I just got a pair of moon boots from Moonlight Roller and I really love them! They’re on the expensive side (around $250) but they’re very sturdy and the boot can be repaired if there’s any damage.
Recommendations for entry-level skates
Recommendations for kids I have a 6yo daughter who is enamored by roller derby and wants to join the local youth league next year.

I want to hug that girl.

TOTALLY this vibe!!!
Enjoying family outings at roller rinks
So much fun! I lived at the roller rink in late elementary and jr high.
Discussion on roller derby culture and animation projects
Sahara has big dreams of one day becoming a Magical Roller Derby champion! The only problem is, she can’t use magic.
This is giving me Roller Derby Steven Universe vibes xD Really fantastic OP!
Ahhh I love this so much!
Discussion on the used skate market
The used market is flooded right now.
I would second the used market especially now / February.
There’s nothing wrong with a used skate.
Best value is used quality skates that fit imo (stitched sole, basically)—otherwise, new entry-level speed skates and level up once you start scrimmaging.
Discussion on roller skating subcultures in major cities
Not just small towns. Atlanta, Chicago and LA has big rollerskating subcultures.
Nostalgic feelings associated with roller skating
I miss roller skating.
I miss Roller Derby.
Discussion on safety gear importance
Roller skate girl pulls off a forward flip while going up the side.
Holy cow, wear a helmet. Head injuries are life-altering or life-ending.
Technically a forward half twist but still impressive (please wear a helmet)
It's like not even cool to not wear a helmet now. Wearing a helmet is actually cool now. 🤔
General enthusiasm for skating culture and experiences
My Carlins are still holding up, and I can go back to them whenever I feel, although with my new setup I don't feel the need.
Discussion about perception vs. actual experience of skates
Hell, they can be down right discouraging and stop you before you even start your skate journey.
Roller skating subcultures in major cities

A woman skateboarding in roller skates 1970s
At least she’s got that glove. It’s important to wear protective gear.
Users reflect on their experiences with different skates
I like the maneuverability of the slightly shorter plates.
