What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Effective against wind blowback
Sabre red gel is a little better because it won't "blow back" in windy conditions or indoors
Best CCW flip top pepper spray? UDAP? SABRE? FOX? POM? Something else?
I value my vision a lot and last thing I need is damage to my eyes from testing out if my pepper gel hurts me.
they actually recommend against pom, saying it’s a low quality spray with a large marketing campaign
Good brand reputation
Sabre is good. I think POM is the best.
I have Pom, but use duct tape on the middle to prevent it from coming apart. I had to use POM on someone’s shitbull who tried to attack my old dog who was 15 at the time. Worked great Sabre is supposed to be pretty decent too,
From personal experience, Sabre Red Phantom is the baddest shit around and has had a 100% success rate so far since we switched to it last year.
Crossfire technology for any angle spray
I like this guy and trust what he says.
Highly regarded brand for pepper spray
Pepper spray questions I have some questions on pepper spray.
Flip-top design for quick access
The flip top sometimes pops off in my pocket. It’s only happened three times in the two years I’ve had it but enough to be obnoxious for me haha.
Buy a flip top instead. I used to carry that style and the safety would constantly disengage in the pocket.
More accessible than other brands
they are very accessible and 1000 times better than the other Amazon or Walmart specials that most people buy.
Effective incapacitation
Works fine.
I certainly wasn't much of a threat to anyone in that state.
Gel formulation prevents misting
It's less of a spray and more of gel jet. In your experience does it make a big difference?
the idea behind gel is it doesn't mist and get all over everything (including the person deploying it).
Trustworthy for law enforcement use
the benefits of gel aren’t as substantial as they are advertised.
Effective for law enforcement use
Sabre makes good pepper spray cops use as well as a bear spray which is what I’ve got.
Gel formulation is safer and more accurate
gel is better since it’s easier to aim accurately, safer indoors, less chance of spraying the user or bystanders and can travel further
I'm not sure how any of these compare to police OC spray, but I got sprayed with a gel in academy yesterday and I'll say it's no joke.
Effective for personal safety
The discharge is really subtle and you'll have to place your nose closely to even smell it.
Flip-top safety mechanism prevents accidental spray
Something ain’t right here...
If the button does not press smoothly and easily, it is probably damaged.
Effective when used correctly
Too weak to use pepper spray? I got Sabre Red pepper gel (pepper spray) to walk home from campus.
Less blowback from wind due to gel formulation
less blowback from wind + won’t hurt bystanders if aimed right
Highly recommended for practice and training
The goal is to get an idea of the spray’s reach, and also so that you have a better handle on how to operate it.
Acts as a deterrent when visible
I'd say carry it. I've never had to use it, luckily, but it's always on my keychain which is on my belt. I feel like it being visible even acts as a deterrence.
Good brand reputation among users
Sabre Red Crossfire y’all (red can)
Gel prevents blowback
Gel, no contest.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Can accidentally spray when unlocked
This! I've had Sabre Red come unlocked in my pocket enough times to stop carrying it.
I would stay away from any dispenser having a tab safety that you have to move to the side.
Concerns about leaving pepper spray in hot environments
The instructions on the bottle of pepper spray will tell you not to leave it in a hot environment, specifics are on the can.
Lack of trust in some lower-end SABRE products
Sabre is okay but there’s so much super low end shit they make I don’t trust it.
Safety design not intuitive
Plus, the clip is rotate-able so you can keep it in your pocket in the position you'll pull it out naturally with you thumb ending up in the correct position.
Stop carrying that and stay with a button that pushed vertically down, and is covered by a plastic door which is under spring pressure.
Unpleasant experience when sprayed
It was extremely unpleasant. Eyes clamped shut involuntarily for 30 minutes.
Lack of clear concentration information
the last time I checked, all Sabre products were 1.33% concentration
all the current production Sabre Red sprays are 1.33% MC (major capsaicinoids)?
Requires accuracy for effectiveness
you have to be a lot more accurate with the gel cause if you don't get it in their face it is not very effective.
Potential for blowback in windy conditions
many products can actually be blown back into your own face when deployed in less than ideal wind conditions or possibly the canister taken from you and sprayed at you so they want to make sure that you know what it feels like and more importantly that you’re still able to function after being hit with it.
Difficult to activate if not used correctly
It's a turn tab safety mechanism. I turn into position, from right to left with my thumb.
Potential for malfunction if the unit is defective
Perhaps contact Sabre Red and make an inquiry.
Can accidentally spray yourself
MISERABLE. What no one tells you is if you use it (spray), odds are youll also tag yourself a fair amount and it SUCKS.
Gel takes longer to take effect
Gel is garbage and takes longer to take effect.

Discussion about alternative brands
yeah dr pepper makes great pepper spray
The sauce inside all three of those is excellent so it comes down to the form factor - i prefer the pom
In terms of EDC, The POM form factor is superior. I’ve been sprayed by all of them and they’re all great sprays. POM just has the best pocket carry and is more end user friendly.
I carried POM for a bit. Never had to use it, but I'm thinking of self-testing it. Will advise how much it sucks.
Discussion about training and testing products
You are allowed to carry it without spraying yourself.
There will be zero issue if people just left other people alone or they face the consequence of their actions.
Discussion about bear spray vs. personal pepper spray
Just because bear spray is bigger doesn't mean it's better.
Comparison with bear spray and dog deterrent spray
like pepper spray but the capsaicin is 0.50 would it work
How about bear spray?
Concerns about expired pepper spray
unsurprised that they not only didn’t notice it’s expired or think that matters, but that they didn’t look into the brand much.
General discussion about training with pepper spray
is it true that you have to be sprayed in the eyes to pass the entrance tests?
I think it depends on the department. We have to get sprayed to qualify and carry it.
Discussion on comparing gel vs spray effectiveness
I imagine if I had to use it, it would very likely be on the street, worst case from the inside of my car.
Gel takes longer to be effective as it does not aerosolize as quickly as spray.
Advice to avoid conflict before using spray
Your best option is to find a different route if at all possible.
Clarification on mace vs pepper spray
Capsaicin aka pepper spray isn't lethal nor will it cause injury used as advised.
Concerns about finding reliable pepper gel products
every single one I’ve found I see has reviews about how they break easily or leak.
Concerns about availability of products in stores
Sadly spray isn’t easy to find in a physical store :(

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
General discussion about pepper spray concentrations
Makes a great Christmas present too!
Personally, I’m debating between ordering some from POM and some from Sabre.
Discussion on effects of pepper spray on individuals
It blows and is adequate for protection.
Concerns about effectiveness of expired pepper spray
How much loss of real effectiveness are we looking at? How much of a hurry should I be in to replace them?
It might still work for you but it might not be as effective and might not save you from the bad actor.
Discussion on testing expired pepper spray
I think expiration on these is more about maintaining can pressure to assure effective range.
I'm considering testing one of them outside against cardboard on a calm day.
Discussion about the effects of pepper spray on users
it is super important to understand that oc isn't 100% effective.
the effects were so severe I couldn't open my eyes for an hour and a half.
if you spray someone, they have 40 seconds to absolutely woop your ass before that shit causes their eyes to clamp shut involuntarily.
Concerns about the use of OC spray for self-defense
OC is isn't a surefire defense and is best a distraction for you to run.
Discussion about the confusion in pepper spray marketing
There is a megafuckton of bullshit and confusion in the marketing of this.
Concerns about the effectiveness of pepper spray in real situations
I was wondering how many of y’all have actually had to use it.
