Snoop's Take

The Sharp R1874T 850W Over-the-Range Convection Microwave is a versatile kitchen appliance designed to efficiently cook, bake, and reheat food. With its 1.1 cubic feet of stainless steel interior and convection capabilities, it allows for browning, broiling, and even crisping of meals, making it a valuable addition to any kitchen. Consumer feedback highlights a mix of satisfaction and frustration with this microwave. Many users appreciate its build quality and durability, with one quote stating, "Sharp is the largest manufacturer of them in the world," which reflects a general trust in the brand. However, some concerns have been raised regarding high failure rates and venting performance, such as the complaint, "the venting performance is terrible." This mixed sentiment indicates that while many enjoy the product, potential buyers should be aware of the risks associated with OTR microwaves. Overall, the Sharp R1874T is recommended for those seeking a reliable convection microwave, provided they are aware of the potential issues reported by some users. It stands out for its cooking capabilities, but caution is advised regarding its longevity and performance under certain conditions.

Yes I did, and it was definitely nicer than my other microwaves.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Better build quality than other microwaves
Yes I did, and it was definitely nicer than my other microwaves.
Good size for cooking
none of those existed when I bought my current microwave 🙂 so I don't really know.
We have an old MagicChef (!) 1.5 cubic foot model now and it's plenty big to be honest.
Efficient cooking with convection feature
Any recommendations for over range microwave brands?
Durability of Sharp microwaves
they practically never break in my experience
Sharp is the largest manufacturer of them in the world
General satisfaction with Sharp products
It's frustrating how much they cost, but it's worked well so far, at least.
Enjoyed using Sharp microwaves
Haven’t had one for more than 2 years, but have used various Sharp models and have really enjoyed it.
User satisfaction with Sharp ovens
I've had it for probably ten years now and it still works like new.
I bought the higher end model of this series and am happy with it so far :)
This is the model that I have and I am very happy with it.
Efficient heating in cooking
Super efficient and heats up really fast.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
High failure rate of parts
They are all made by the same company (Midea) using the same cheap parts whether you're paying $150 or $450 for your OTR micro.
Well… we have this microwave and just after 2yrs 3 months. It’s broken.
Frequent handle breakage
Good luck!
a few years later, it's still holding up super well. It also feels so much nicer than the clearly cheap plastic one that it came with.
Poor venting performance
the venting performance is terrible. If you have it venting outside/ducts, it still circulates a ton of the air in the room because of a poor design.
Common part failures
Ours did after four years. Appliance folks said it’s a common part that breaks (the name escapes me right now), and it would not be worth repairing.
I'm looking to replace one that I just bought a year and a half ago. It's still "running" if you want to call it that but it started smoking and takes twice as long to heat things as it used to.
Microwave has just died. Can't imagine it's had much use at all, and it's a reputable brand (I'd thought) so I totally agree with OP.
Frequent failures with OTR microwaves
Over the Range Microwave vs Range Hood Just got a new home and it currently has a OTR microwave w/ gas stove. It doesn't work and requires replacement.
I have never in my life had a microwave that died until I had an OTR. Two of them died on me. When they die, they are more expensive and a much bigger hassle to replace.
Concerns about fire hazards with microwaves
I recently had a microwave explode in my kitchen. It wasn’t a drawer microwave, but I’d probably have dealt with a fire if it was.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on various microwave brands and models
Ideally, we'd stay below $400, which limits the name brand options.
I fix appliances.
I'm surprised by the Samsung recommendation.
Get the one with the highest CFM and hopefully, you have it ducted outside.
Discussion about various microwave features and capabilities
New microwave ovens can do it all! Grill, Convection, Turbo Bake... Chaos?
I think quick defrost would be a much more marketable feature. Fantastic application of esoteric principle however.
Why only defrosting and not cooking?
I mean, why is defrosting chicken the only application for this?
Discussion about venting capabilities
A bit pricier than the countertop nowadays but well worth it as it allows venting to outside duct while cooking.
Comments on venting performance
I have a new GE over the range microwave and the venting is much more powerful than the two I had before.
If you're comparing the GE vs WP, currently priced at $298, definitely go with the GE.
Discussion about the microwave's advanced technology
The Antique Microwave Oven that's Better than Yours
This microwave has a microcontroller, a dot matrix display, and can even do graphics.
Even if it could only run something like a port of the TI-84 version, it would still be a microwave running Doom!
General discussion about baking and oven performance
Baking seems to take longer and the heating is uneven at best.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

Comparison to under counter microwaves
My 4yo granddaughter thinks it's just right.
Discussion about warranty options
Still waiting for install…guess I’ll upgrade that warranty now :/
The new ones are a cash grab joke.
Comparisons with other brands/models
Most over the range microwaves top out at 400 CFM.
honestly it's still helpful but maybe I should have just used chatGPT instead of searching and looking at reddit
Discussion about venting preferences and alternatives
I'm primarily interested in venting performance. I don't care if there is a cooking sensor and a popcorn button; the feature I care about is venting.
They also elevate several inches more clearance above the cooking surface as they are not as tall as a normal microwave.
CFM is really all you are looking for - the bigger the number the better.
I did look at the CFM specs when deciding on which microwave.
Confusion about fan setup in microwaves
Awesome suggestion. I’m wondering how you know this since the product page doesn’t mention there’s two fans?
It is still one of the best options for what you are looking for.
Doesn't that parts diagram show two motors/fans? Items 10 and 13 on the ventilation diagram.
General comparison of brands
They are all vey similar.
Discussion about microwave/air fryer combo vs separate appliances
Would you recommend getting a microwave/air fryer combo or a “regular” microwave and standalone air fryer?
Having a separate microwave (built-in) is the most versatile option overall.
If you go with a combo unit you gotta get a high quality one which won't be cheap.
General discussion on microwave brands and models
I guess I’m kind of skeptical of insurance companies and assumed they would try to cheap out but based upon my layman research they seem comparable.
Most microwaves are the same. I wouldn't say any are better than others.
Most microwaves are the same. I wouldn't say any are better than others.
Preference for alternative microwave placements
I hate above the range microwaves and put in a chimney hood anyway in our gut renovation 2 years ago.
Preference for countertop space over OTR microwaves
Losing that space on the countertop is too much for me.
have not regretted having the additional counter space and the low profile looks sleek compared to the typical OTR monsters.
While the hood is *better* it's not enough better to make it worth skipping the microwave.
Discussion about venting effectiveness of range hoods vs OTR microwaves
Range hoods are truly only worthwhile if they are venting to the outside.
Discussion about various microwave configurations and preferences
do we go with the two ovens and a microwave OR do we we get rid of the microwave, scale the range back down to one full size oven and get a speed oven to do the job of microwave and second oven?
I would have gotten one with a side opening door
It works wonderfully. It’s a bit of a challenge to clean (the heating element on the top makes cleaning splatters up there a wee bit harder) so it’s important to wipe it down regularly.
It’s a great oven.
Discussion about various microwave types and preferences
there’s a small but vocal minority of consumers that report these things breaking down in 2 years, sometimes starting to smoke.
I love it. Highly recommend.
Comparison of different oven types and brands
Works perfectly for sourdough bread, roasted veggies, cookies, granola, cinnamon buns, and more! The highlights of this oven is that it can be either a steam or a convection oven, it heats and keeps high temperature easily, and it's quiet.
There is the kind that has an actual steam button which seems to be 'superheated steam', and ovens that don't have superheated steam and don't have a steam button but have a water tank which I guess just gets used in all the regular grill/oven/etc.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Satisfaction with LG OTR model
We have the LG OTR extended exhaust vents for the past 4 years with no complaints.
Advice on microwave repair
Was wondering if you could please help me with a question... I have a Frigidaire OTR Microwave Model FPBM307NTF that still lights up but the entire LED button screen stopped working.
There should be a plug there to disconnect them. You are going to find those wires chewed and disconnected.
Just wanted to thank you for your reply! It was exactly what you said and we were able to fix it by following your instructions.
Market dominance by few manufacturers
All over the range micr8waves are made by two brands.
Sharp and Panasonic manufacture very few over the range microwaves.
Discussion on planned obsolescence of microwaves
Can't complain for how well it's built, but it's clearly on the way out.
Comparison of microwave durability
The Panasonic model I bought in 1999 is still going strong. Full of features and looks like new.
It just takes up a lot of counter space.
Discussion about electrical issues affecting microwaves
They can also be sensitive to bad electrical.
Yeah, I don’t mess around with that.
Microwaves draw a lot of current but if it's throwing the breaker, the problem might be your wiring.
