Snoop's Take

STAEDTLER FIMO Soft Polymer Clay is a versatile oven-bake clay designed for jewelry, sculpting, and various crafting projects. It comes in 12 assorted colors and offers a workable consistency pre-bake that transforms into a durable finish once cured in a home oven. Consumers have been vocal about its merits and shortcomings. Some users affirm that "it's strong after baking and is easy to work with," praising its quality and bulk purchase value, while others lament issues like crumbly texture and brittleness after baking. The feedback presents a balanced picture with high praise for its vivid color variety and strengths in detailed work, juxtaposed with criticism over inconsistent texture and handling difficulties. Overall, the product is recommended for crafters and artists who value a broad color spectrum and versatile use, though potential buyers should be prepared to invest a bit of extra conditioning effort to overcome its occasional textural missteps.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
High quality for detailed work
Fimo is a good one high quality but just too hard for my liking.
I would say that what I've tried of Fimo professional it's a nice clay to work with.
Softest option among tested brands
Fimo soft is the softest of them all and I like it, but it is the most expensive.
Good deal on bulk purchase
I think it's a bargain, don't you?
What a deal—hope you have fun with it!
Such a good deal!
Strong after baking and easy to work with
It's strong after baking and is easy to work with.
Fimo Soft should be softer than Fimo Professional/Classic
Personally, I've never liked Fimo Soft since it just never seemed to do the things I'm used to being able to do.
New packaging indicates improved quality
I found the clay to be really soft, and easy to condition.
Can be softened with Vaseline while conditioning
The best tip I've found for Fimo is rub some Vaseline into it whilst conditioning it and it softens right out!

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Clay is crumbly and hard to knead.
It's completely crumbly, I can't knead.
you do have to work it a bit before you can use it or it’ll be crumbly like the previous commenter said.
Expired Fimo can be hard as a rock.
i have a very fool proof way to bring it back to life but it takes a lot of kneading.
Too soft and becomes brittle after baking
it is too soft and it gets brittle after you bake it sooo maybe its alright for getting some experience but for later use i wouldn't recommend it.
Less preferable compared to other brands like Premo Sculpey
Meh, for the money, premo sculpey is much better imo, less brittle after baking and far less burnable.
Clay can be rock hard when purchased
This clay is super hard. Should I try to return it?
You can tell your clay is old if it's not just hard but, if it crumbles when you try to condition it.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about Fimo brand product range
Polymer clay can create many more patterns, shapes, looks, etc, than air-dry clays.
Discussion about clarity of Fimo liquid after curing
It will not give you the crystal clear look like resin will, and it is not hard like glass, but it will be transparent.
Discussion on the strength and characteristics of Premo! polymer clay.
If you're making shapes and just sticking them together though, it's the bees knees.
Different lines of Fimo have varying handling characteristics
all the Fimo's ARE STRONG after baking as long as they've been properly and thoroughly cured.
General appreciation for resources and community knowledge
Discovering the depth of possibilities with clay after a serious accident in 2003 saved my sanity.
Wow, this is a LOT of wonderful information!!

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about using glazes and clear coats on polymer clay
It will protect your piece from potentially getting stained and it will also make the colors more vibrant.
Or even using some amazing clear coat epoxy lightly brushed on if you want a very glossy look:)
yeah good idea! have the transparent spray already at home and it was my first try & then i forgot to cover it.
Polymer clay usually won't get stained more than any other plastic though (including most clear finishes), but using a gloss clear finish or sanding-and-buffing to a gloss will make colors somewhat more vibrant.
Suggestions for achieving clearer casts
I think you'll need a resin to make something completely clear.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion about comparing polymer clay brands
Sculpey or Fimo? Which brand is better? Newbie question.
It seems softer to me, and for that reason I prefer Sculpy.
Better is super subjective.
I think they are all great.
Discussion about methods to rejuvenate hard clay.
Works like a charm.
Adding some translucent liquid clay and kneading it works for me.
Put it in a plastic bag with a little bit of mineral oil.
It takes time, but you can condition it.
Discussion on trying different brands
I came to the conclusion that Fimo professional was the best, since I plan on making very detailed pieces.
I recommend you purchase a brick of each kind....a fairly small investment....and work with them on a small project.
Comparisons of different brands of translucent liquid polymer clay
Most translucent liquid clays now put the word "clear" somewhere on the label, but previously they just put "translucent."
Discussion about using Sculpey vs. Fimo clay.
Not a fan. It’s fine one s you condition it, but straight out of the package it’s just ridiculously crumbly.
Sculpey III though (or Bakeshop, same thing)--not a very high-quality polymer clay, but one of the least expensive colored polymer clays.
Advice on baking polymer clay thoroughly for better strength.
be sure you're baking it *thoroughly* so it will be at least as strong as that brand/line can be.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about long-term inhalation safety
better safe than sorry right?
If it's fully cured, it's just plastic.
Inquiries about air-dry clay safety
I’ve seen quite many air dry clay masks so I’m thinking it can’t be harmful *right?*
Health and safety concerns regarding polymer clay usage
I'm being slightly put off by all the health and safety stuff.
Companies will take the easiest route to explain things, instead of making their product seem incredibly fussy to use.
I always washed and used a cloth to help rub it off before moving onto another colour.
Concerns about smell when cooking polymer clay
I didn’t think about the liquid smelling more when cooking though I’ll have to watch out for that.
Concerns about condition of clay due to exposure to heat
50 euros is about $58 so a very good deal, especially as long as none, or few, of the bars are too hard from having been exposed to heat at some point after manufacturing.
Discussion about the fragility of Sculpey III after baking.
I just started using this amazing product, I bought a pack of Sculpey III in many colors and I loved them.
Sculpey III is one of the polymer clays that's 'too soft' for achieving and holding crisp fine detail.
the general opinion is what you greatly explained me in your first lines, Sculpey III is very fragile after bake and isn't the best option for miniatures.
Concerns about clarity of liquid Fimo
I want as clear as possible, and this doesn't look like it will work.
Kato's version is also a bit thinner from the bottle than Fimo or TLS versions which can be an advantage at least in some situations.
Discussion on curing temperature impact
My oven's minimum temperature is 140C so I can't cook the FIMO at 110 like it wants, should I still just go with 30 minutes?
Curing clay at too high of a temperature will result in burning.
But never exceed the 130, it will result in burning.
