My favorite thing about the Tonie box is that we can plug headphones into it and my son will listen to it on long road trips.

Positive Feedback

they get annoyed that tonies stops playing when you take it off so they can’t play while they listen which is counterintuitive if you ask me but hey learned this after :)

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Kids enjoy the Toniebox for bedtime stories
My favorite thing about the Tonie box is that we can plug headphones into it and my son will listen to it on long road trips.
Anybody have any experience with “Tonies” story time readers? I’ve seen them whenever I go to a store, with lots of different characters that I assume tell different stories.
He loves it, and it’s helped keep screen time down because he loves the stories so much and will prefer to listen to them instead of asking for the tv to be turned on.
Easy for toddlers to navigate independently
Yupppppp. I wanted something: * stripped down in functionality so that my toddler can navigate without me needing to intervene every three seconds
Our almost 4yo got a toniebox for his 3rd birthday and he absolutely loves it!!
We have a Tonies Box for our 2 y/o and overall its been a good investment.
I have the Toniebox. It's made in Germany and quite popular there. I think I paid 60€, waited for a 20% off deal, which was rare.
Kids enjoy using the Toniebox
She took to it pretty quickly! We made a card with the Bluey soundtrack, which she was obsessed with, and made sure to play it every day, lol.
We got one when our kid was 18 months so she would have a physical music player that wasn't dad's record player😅 She had the thing basically mastered within a week.
My five year old loves her toniebox. We usually get her a new tonie or two for each holiday, and she won’t always be super excited in the moment, but she loves listening to them and playing with them.
My kid got one for his third birthday a few months back with a Woody figurine, since he's obsessed with Toy Story. He listened to it constantly for the first month -- you switch tracks by whacking the side of the box, which I think made it even more appealing -- so we eventually got him a Buzz Lightyear (which tells the story of Toy Story 2) and a Rudolph that plays Christmas songs, but he refused to listen to them.
Easy for young children to navigate independently
Huge fan, much easier to keep track of the cards vs the toys on a tonie machine.
Toniebox allows creation of custom content
The toniebox does allow you to make your own mixtapes and stories
Good for younger kids (2 years old)
My kiddo is only 2 so it seemed the best for her right now.
He got really into it right around turning 2 and just dances and sings with it around the house constantly and I don’t need to sacrificed my phone for his music.
Kids enjoy using the Toniebox for bedtime stories
They only do family screen time tho, so not sure it will compete with a switch tbf.
Kids enjoy the cause and effect interaction
He's understood if he now places the figure on the base, he gets music.
I think I'll just go ahead and get one.
Variety of Tonie figures available
There are *tons* of different Tonie figures. You can also get ones that allow you to download various freebies from the app, or even record your own story onto the figurine via the app.
Kids enjoy the Toniebox for educational content
They WILL listen to it. They will love it. They will learn how to increase the volume.
7yr old still uses his Tonie that he's had since he was 2, it's been well worth the investment.
My toddler likes this custom tonie (that I have downloaded 90% of educational stuff 10% songs) and the fox counting one the most.
My 6 year old still uses his, we got it at 3.5.
Tonies can be easily managed by toddlers
My son listens to his Tonie box every night to go to sleep. They are his "stories" and he puts them on himself and if he's having trouble falling asleep or wakes during the night he'll sometimes get up and put a new one on.
Kids enjoy the variety of Tonies available
It's much more tolerable than listening to the same nursery rhyme songs all day 😂
Kids enjoy using the Toniebox daily
Anyone have one and think it’s a waste of money or on the other side a good toy and worth the money?
Kids enjoy various Tonies figures
I already feel a bit clueless, so I picked up a couple of figures second hand yesterday to try it out.
I try to get longer playing tonies with a mix of music and stories.
My two year olds favorites are: Daniel Tiger, Leo the Leopard, Laurie Berkner, any of the singing animal ones, Mickey Christmas.
My youngest really likes the cookie monster one!
Ability to sample songs/stories before buying
You can sample the songs/stories on their website or the app before buying😁
Some Disney Tonies feature original audio
We love Hercules! The incomparable Roy Dotrice does the narration, with original audio for the songs within the overall story.
Kids enjoy the Cars Tonie despite changes
My kid realized it immediately with the Cars one but he likes the music so he goes, “it’s a new version!” Plus, he likes them telling the Cars story.
Kids enjoy using the Toniebox for nursery rhymes and stories
He doesn't watch much telly and is too young to have favourite characters. But he loves nursery rhymes, being sung too and stories so I thought it might be a good investment to help with speech and keep the screen time down!
It’s a little disturbing, and bringing him back to reality can cause him to have a meltdown. That doesn’t seem to happen with his Toniebox; he enjoys listening to the story, but can still interact with you, and doesn’t such big feelings when it’s time to finish up.
Kids enjoy story Tonies
My daughter is 8 and no longer likes the music Tonies. She loves Gabbys Dollhouse because it tells a story.
The Hercules one is the movie story with songs mixed in.
My 4 year old is obsessing over the Greek Myths tonie right now.
There are some Roald Dahl books on Tonies - like Matilda - and I hear the Nat Geo tonies are good for big kids too.
Variety of story options for older kids
any of the "favorite tales" tonies or whatever theyre called. they’re a series.
Kids enjoy the Playtime Puppy Tonie for preschool songs
Best Tonies with Songs I’m getting my (almost) 2 year old son a Tonie box for his second birthday.
The puppy playtime that came with ours is a favorite with my little. It’s all the preschool songs, she will wheels in the bus all day long 😂.
Toniebox characters reduce clutter compared to other gifts
Toniebbox characters are great because they don't clutter the house as much as other gifts!
Toniebox allows easy tracking of content options
any that are songs have a music note by them so you can see exactly what you get.
Kids love the Toniebox for bedtime stories
My daughter will be 4 in April and I'm leaning towards getting her a Toniebox and Tonies for her big present.
My daughter (4.5) LOVES her toniebox. Best purchase we’ve made.
We also have all the music ones and quite a few creative ones I’ve curated. Highly recommend.
Toniebox is great for quiet time and relaxation
The box is nice for “rest”/“quiet time” when I just want her to slow down for a bit in the afternoon.
Kids enjoy nursery rhymes Tonies
The puppy with all the nursery rhymes, Winnie the Pooh, and the Halloween bat.
15 months: Paddington, Peppa, Bing, any of the songs ones, and the Witch (but only until the actual story starts and the Witch stops talking).
Kids like the creative Tonie for custom songs
My 2 year old loves the creative Tonie that we put all of his favorite kids songs on.
Kids enjoy character-specific Tonies like Blues Clues
I’d consider it an audio theater production more so than an audiobook.
Tonies can cater to varied music preferences
Sometimes mama’s had enough kids’ music and needs some Symphony No. 6, ya know?
Kids enjoy listening to Tonies for bedtime stories
Title says it all. My daughter loves music and I just want to know if Tonies are worth the hype and money?
We couldn’t live without ours! Each of my kids has their own and picks a tonie from our basket every night to fall asleep to.
He worked out how to use it in about 5 minutes and he likes to listen to songs and some of the educational National Geographic ones.
Kids enjoy using the Toniebox for bedtime routines
Tonies worth the money? Im considering it because my daughter who is 2.5 years old loves books and gadgets of any kind.
My 3 year old listens to her toniebox every single night as part of her bedtime routine and also frequently during the day.
Fun and enjoyable for kids
The songs/voices aren’t the people from the actual movies which caught me by surprise.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Playback stops when character is removed
they get annoyed that tonies stops playing when you take it off so they can’t play while they listen which is counterintuitive if you ask me but hey learned this after :)
I like to yoto cause I can do the MYO (make your own) cards to get family narrated recorded stories to listen and read with “papa” even if papa can’t answer the phone to read a story with the 2yr old.
my daughter got tired of it pretty quick. I babysit another little boy 4 days a week and he likes it to be on 24/7 but he doesn’t actually play with it.
Connectivity issues reported
We LOVE our Storypod. Had a Tonie box but kept having connectivity issues so switched to Storypod and we’re super happy for a few different reasons:
Expensive content cards for additional stories
I’ve found the cards quite expensive at $12 per story for some.
Yoto has some AMAZING content. Frog and toad, Raffi, Disney, Daniel tiger, mediation, Kidz bop, bedtime stories, peppa pig, Sesame Street, holiday themed songs and books.
We got a yoto player for our daughter for her 2nd birthday. She likes it to be on while she’s playing so we use it daily.
Product is perceived as expensive
I wish these weren't so expensive.
It’s superior in nearly every way, especially the production quality and content of the audio offerings.
Figurines can be lost easily
I got the Yoto for my kid at 3 because I didn’t want her to play with the toy figures and lose them.
Many Disney Tonies do not use original audio
Like I get it, royalties or whatever, you can't use the original audio but by God they don't have to be off key either
I always thought about getting one , then i heard they don’t use the real audio and saw people complaining about it.
Comparison to Yoto highlights perceived limitations
Its got a white / brown / pink noise machine setting
Some Disney Tonies do not feature original songs
It's not ALL Disney Tonies. Some are fine.
The Tangled/Rapunzel Tonie is the worst thing I’ve ever heard 😅
Tonie figures are easy to lose
All of ours have disappeared rendering the Tony useless until we have the energy to look for them lol.
Kids may lose interest quickly
He had fun with it for about 2 days, and then he’s lost interest.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Comparison to Yoto highlights different features and pricing
Make your own cards are awesome and we've made our own mixtapes, put audiobooks on them, and had friends and family record themselves reading books to LO.
So many meltdowns saved from that fact alone.
The mini has a better battery life, is smaller, and cheaper.
We plan to get our 2.5yo a Yoto Mini for Christmas this year!
Discussion about different audio player features
We have the Yoto and both of my children love it.
My now 3 year old loves the Yoto radio station too, another great feature over the Tonie.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Comparison to traditional audio players highlights a shift away from screens
I think we reinvented tape/CD players because we don't want to give children smartphones
We got the Yoto for my son's 4th birthday. We were hoping it might reduce screen time (they don't get much anyway), and encourage some independent time.
Mention of alternative audio devices
My kid carries it everywhere, even on trips, and it’s so much more useful than the tonies that he refuses to even look at the tonies trial station in stores now.
Comparison to Yoto highlights different content types
Yoto! Cards are compact, easily stored, and not enticing as playthings. They're also backed up to the app, which you can use to play them on the Yoto with wifi.
Discussion about app integration with Yoto
Yoto also has an app on your phone to manage your cards as well as play the content.
Questions about downloading custom songs
You can download songs?????? Tell me more. How can I get “hit the road jack”?
Discussion about alternatives like Yoto for younger kids
Our Yoto player is on in our house for at least 5 hours a day plus we play the cards through the app when we are in the car.
Discussion of Tonies for different age groups
All the Ronald Dahl are great, paddington Bear is also great.
Discussion about audio player preferences among parents
she almost never listens to the stories and seriously prefers the song cards
Discussion on comparisons with other audio players like Yoto
I don’t have a Tonie but my 4 year old loves our Yoto.
Comparison to Yoto highlights different player preferences
We have the yoto player and we love it! It makes my son feel very independent when he can pick and choose what he wants to listen to without any help.
Comparison of Toniebox with Yoto
a stack of cards seems easier to manage / collect and presumably cheaper as a personal library grows.
I'm looking at Yoto or Toniebox for my kids, so any input would be helpful.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about the Toniebox's appeal to toddlers
Girlfriend (almost 4) circled this in the Amazon catalog and has been practicing saying “I want a Tonie box” for when she sees Santa 😂
Discussion about song versus story content in Tonie figures
most of the ones my family has are a mix.
