Snoop's Take

The BLACK+DECKER One Touch Coffee Grinder is a versatile appliance designed for grinding coffee beans and spices with ease. With its stainless steel blades and a push-button control, it allows users to achieve the desired grind consistency, making it suitable for a variety of uses. Consumer feedback indicates that while the grinder is effective as a spice grinder, it struggles with coffee grinding consistency. Many users noted, "Blade grinders grind the coffee really unevenly, which leads to bad extraction," highlighting concerns about the quality of coffee grinds. Conversely, users praise its performance for spices, stating, "I mostly use it for grinding obscene amounts of cumin," showcasing its strengths in that area. Overall, the BLACK+DECKER One Touch Coffee Grinder is recommended for users who primarily want a spice grinder rather than a quality coffee grinder. Its performance in grinding spices makes it a good choice for culinary uses, but coffee aficionados may want to consider alternatives for brewing quality coffee.

And thank goodness it's such an excellent spice grinder, my cayenne pepper plant has been working overtime this season.

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Works well as a spice grinder
And thank goodness it's such an excellent spice grinder, my cayenne pepper plant has been working overtime this season.
Terrible coffee grinder, outstanding coffee chopper.
15 year old Spice Grinder going strong
I mostly use it for grinding obscene amounts of cumin.
Works excellently for grinding spices
How do you guys grind your spices? I live in Canada. I'm trying to get into grinding my own fresh spices for some special dishes.
I've been using an electric coffee grinder to grind my spices for about 20 years. Works excellently.
same here, works well... but it would be small batches (which is actually better in my experience!)
I have a stone mortar and pestle.....in my cabinet. I actually use a cheapo $10 Black and Decker coffee grinder that I only use for spices.
Better grinding consistency than food processors
food processors, even really good ones with sharp blades, don't do as well as a bladed coffee grinder at getting a fine, even ground spice.
Coffee/Spice mills are designed for what you're doing, and food processors are not.
Effective for grinding whole spices
I just got a $20 Black and Decker coffee grinder that works great for whole spices.

Where it needs some work!

Produces uneven coffee grinds
Blade grinders grind the coffee really unevenly, which leads to bad extraction.
This results in a very uneven grind, with bigger pieces and finer pieces.
I do a coarse grind with my shitty hamilton beach $15 grinder.
It chops and cooks the coffee leaving it the wrong sized and tasting bad when brewed.
Not suitable for quality coffee brewing
Blade grinders are pretty bad, but pre-ground at the grocery has its own problems as any ground coffee will start to oxidize in hours.
Produces inconsistent grind size
A basic coffee grinder is fine for most applications. It won't give a consistent grind size for like pepper coatings for steak or BBQ that a burr grinder will do better
The difference with the black and decker grinder and the baratza encore is the grind quality.
The black and decker probably isn’t on the same level as the Encore, to be honest.

Discussion about the differences between blade and burr grinders
Why is it a bad coffee grinder? 25 people in this thread saying don't grind coffee in that, not a single one explaining why.
It's a blade grinder as people said. The trick is to shake it like a cocktail shaker while grinding.

Discussion about the effectiveness of spice grinders compared to food processors
My spice grinder died a horrific death the other day.
Some of the options I'm seeing are burr grinders.
i find my spice grinder is better at making fine powders, but when i want to make larger flakes or whatever it tends to be more inconsistent, giving me a lot of fines along with the larger grind.
I use a food processor to turn them into flakes, save some, then use a cheap magic bullet knock off blender to get them to a good particle size.
Discussion about grind quality differences between blade and burr grinders
Is the black and decker grinder okay for beginners?
Wow thank you for the thorough explanation! I didn't know that the grinds were inconsistent to that extent.
I would spend more in a grinder now and avoid buying an upgrade so soon.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Using a coffee grinder for spices
I use a regular Oster blender. However if there are any hard spices I dry grind them first in my spice grinder (coffee grinder exclusively used as spice grinder) and then add the ground spices to the Oster to blend with wet/soft ingredients.
What is a good spice/coffee grinder that I can buy? I have a regular blender (ninja) that I LOVE for smoothies, milkshakes, and other cooking related needs but I need a small one for “dry grinding” I.e., grinder small amount of coffee beans, or spices.
Don't use the same grinder for spices and coffee. Your coffee will pick up flavors.
Agreed! It’s why I bought the shardor brand from Amazon. Came with 2 grinding bowls. I’ll check out Mr. Coffee. Thanks for your suggestion!
Discussion about using different grinders for spices and coffee
I have 2, one for spices and one for coffee.
Discussion about using coffee grinders for spices
I also use my old coffee grinder as a spice grinder. But it has grinded coffee before.
Discussion on alternatives to electric grinders
I don’t need anything fancy just inexpensive.
A mortar and pestle is one of the most underrated but wonderful things you can have in a kitchen.
Don't use a weed grinder lmao
My tiny machine puts my expensive food processor to shame. It also comes with a bigger "wet grinder" you can liquify concrete with.

Personal anecdotes about using various grinders
coffee always tasted fantastic.
so I've been considering other options.
Discussion about cleaning the grinder
I got one of these from my mom and how the hell do you rinse it out?
Personal anecdotes about mechanical skills and repairs
I tried to turn it on, just one more time, with hope. It’s fine now.
Personal anecdotes about cleaning methods
I coffee mill with the whirling blades.
Discussion about quiet grinders
Silent Grinders? I want to transition to whole bean coffee but I think it's a sin to make noise in the morning.
Use a hand grinder. They are extremely quiet.
Hand grinders are probably going to be your only solution. Electric grinders are just inherently loud.
Lagom p64, not as quiet as a handgrinder but pretty damned quiet.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about flavor transfer between spices and coffee
Is it okay to use it for coffee afterwards (of course after wiping off the remnants of previous spices) or it would make the coffee taste odd?
