Gain + Odor Defense Liquid Laundry Detergent is a powerful laundry solution designed to tackle tough odors while providing a fresh and clean scent to your clothes. This detergent is compatible with HE machines and safe for all fabric types, making it a versatile choice for families, especially those with infants. Consumer feedback highlights the detergent's effectiveness in eliminating odors from various fabrics, with one user stating, "Things just don’t smell clean to me with fragrance free, and they don’t stay 'fresh' as long." Many appreciate its safety for sensitive skin, with comments such as, "I feel a lot better about using Gain now." However, some users raise concerns about the intensity of the fragrance, with one remarking, "I think it's a bit scammy the way dreft is marketed personally." Overall, Gain + Odor Defense Liquid Laundry Detergent is highly recommended for its ability to provide a fresh scent and effective cleaning, although potential buyers should consider the fragrance intensity if they have sensitive skin or are washing baby clothes.

Positive Feedback

It also makes no sense why a baby detergent would have such intense fragrance? Babies don't smell bad.

we just switched.
Never caused any issues for our son.
it didn’t have any effect on my LO.
Effective for washing baby clothes
Also agree on the entire family switching, bc leftover detergent from a previous wash can cause irritation if baby is particularly sensitive.
Effective in eliminating odors
Things just don’t smell clean to me with fragrance free, and they don’t stay “fresh” as long.
Will you (did you) use special detergent for baby clothes?
It honesty is a really good detergent, and I rarely have to use stain remover in addition.
Finding detergent shouldn’t be this hard lol.
Effective in eliminating tough odors
I've noticed it doesn't really work on stains.
Effective in eliminating odors from work clothes
What detergent pod REALLY gets odors out? I work in food service, and my bf works primarily outside and lately I’ve been having troubles getting odors out of our work clothes.
Works great on my husband's work clothes.
Gain is safe for infants
I just went to Costco and got an insane amount of laundry detergent, but didn't see any baby detergent so I was just wondering if it's ok if I use Gain on her clothes.

Fragrance may cause irritation
It also makes no sense why a baby detergent would have such intense fragrance? Babies don't smell bad.
Yes it can fuck with a lot of fabrics.
Fragrance may cause irritation for babies
Is Gain really that harsh? I really don't want to re-wash, re-fold, and re-hang/put away everything if I don't have to!
Dreft has so much perfume in it and is expensive.
Fragrance may cause irritation for sensitive skin
I think it's a bit scammy the way dreft is marketed personally.
I will never understand the newborn detergent that is scented.
I wouldn't use Dreft as this scent is OVERWHELMING.
New scents are disappointing compared to original
Today it does not smell the same in spite of the companies claims that the scent didn’t change—IT DID.
The original scent will never be available again because whoever is the Scent King will not allow it !!!
If it ain’t broke why fix it?
I can’t stand the latest scent, to me it smells like mildew.
Fragrance is overwhelming
Agree! Dreft has a nauseating smell.
Concerns about fragrance chemicals
Jury is out on fragrance chemicals so I get unfragranced everything JIC because it is unnecessary... also I hate fake smells.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on detergent efficacy and oil stains
Never had an issue with oil stains from the detergent and/softener.
Not sure why my clothes sometimes brand new come out of dryer after washing first time with oil spots.
Discussion about fabric softener effectiveness
Is this a scam ? Like they're both on sale for the same price, does + Odor defense actually do anything?
they don't accept exchanges in detergent bc they don't come with a seal that you could use to know if it was opened or tampered with.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
General discussion about detergent usage
Will someone PLEASE explain this to my husband.
Molly suds! A much cleaner product.
Discussion on odor removal techniques
I've been using Pine Sol as a pre-wash with regular laundry detergent to wash my BJJ clothes and it used to work for a bit in getting the odors out.
Oxi clean odor blaster soak as per directions, borax, minimal laundry soap, extra rinse with small amount of vinegar for fabric softener is the combo that finally worked for me.
Lysol laundry sanitizer and borax for me and my son.
Sharing of laundry tips and tricks
Amazing! More options is best as I can do some trials and errors until I find what works for me.
That's a real pro tip right there and I'll also make sure to set my wash with extra rinse moving forward for the same reason!
Could you go into more detail on how you do all this?
I used to use a shitload cause more = better smell, but that's not true it makes it worse as soon as it gets wet with sweat.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

Discussion on baby-specific detergents
Best baby laundry detergent? FTM and gonna start washing all of baby’s clothes.
I think we just ended up with this one because it was cheap and came in jumbo size.
That fragrance free smell just doesn't have the same clean feeling as an actual scent if you know what I mean.
To me it smells so good I’ve used it on my own clothes a few times lol.
Comparison to other brands
Not just for babies, and works great.
General discussion about scent preferences
didn't know it was so bad to want things to smell nice lol.
some oils absolutely shouldn’t be on certain articles of clothing like underwear.
It's basically a 'baby tax' to sell these fancy baby safe detergents.
Discussion about the necessity of baby detergent
Do we REALLY need baby detergent?
You do not need separate detergent unless you’re washing your clothes in really scented stuff.
I use all free and clear and it’s been the best thing for my baby’s skin.
I've never even heard of baby detergent.
Discussion on the necessity of baby-specific detergents
I mean, it’s probably the same exact stuff right???
I could not fathom what the difference between those would need to be.
Preference for unscented and free and clear detergents
we just use tide free and gentle.
it’s the laundry detergent we use for the whole family now.
My husband prefers scent free detergent, as do I now, so we just use the same detergent & wash habit for the entire family.
Concerns about the marketing of baby detergents
We switched to that too, it was way cheaper than Dreft.
Discussion about the necessity of baby laundry detergent
I use the free and gentle hypoallergenic laundry detergent so I didn’t think it was necessary to buy a separate detergent for my baby.
People, especially the 45+ crowd, assume everyone wants Dreft.
No, you don't need another one.
The one you use is better than many “baby” detergents because it won’t have fragrances or dyes.
Discussion about scent preferences in laundry detergent
BEST “fresh” smelling laundry detergent? Just that good old laundry smell!
If OP wants a scent, recommend a scent!
There’s a lot of white musk in it.
smells just the way I feel "clean" ought to smell 😊
Discussion on other detergent options
U NEED TO TRY GAIN HAPPY SCENT!!! TRUST ME THIS IS THE SCENT IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR GAIN JUST RELEASED IT……..
try arm and hammer clean meadow. No it doesn't smell like gain but it has back home smell I can/t explain.
Discussion about OxiClean and its properties
Guys what is OxiClean and should I get detergent with it?
Its oxygen bleach. Its color safe & removes a lot of stains.
Yeup, I use a bit every load and it makes a huge difference!
I guess I prefer to control the amount of OxiClean I use when I do use it.
Discussion about cleaning washing machines
this really is the bane of my existence right now D:
I’m jealous of those that walk by and smell like clean laundry. I want that! Lol
there is a good chance that the smell comes from buildup.
An empty hot water cycle isn't enough to clean the machine.
Concerns about overpriced baby laundry detergents
Baby laundry detergent? I have a boatload of baby clothes I want to clean and hang in anticipation o
Basicly anything specifically labieled as "baby" is probably overpriced as a way to make money off anxious parents.
Well he didn’t react. We’ve been using the same stuff ever since and he remains rashless at 5 months old.
By 6 months they are usually crawling all over and getting exposed to all sorts of things so i figure they should be OK.
Discussion on using Free and Clear detergents for sensitive skin
Do you have the time and energy and need to nest? Go for it.
Discussion on necessity of special detergent for babies
Do you really need special detergent for baby clothes?
I wouldn't splurge just yet.
Not necessary!
He’s been perfectly fine.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about fragrance sensitivity
Note that if you are even mildly fragrance-sensitive, tide powder is an absolute nightmare.
I stopped doing that and no more weird oil stains.
If you use liquid fabric softener, that is where the oil spots are coming from.
Concerns about scent boosters
If you have expensive clothing or are anal about taking care of your things, I’d recommend against them… but for work stuff probably doesn’t matter.
the scent boosters make my clothes smell musty.
