Snoop's Take

The GE Profile Opal 2.0 is a countertop nugget ice maker designed to produce chewable and crunchy nugget ice quickly and efficiently. With a 0.75-gallon tank, it can make up to 38 pounds of ice in 24 hours and features built-in WiFi for convenient monitoring and scheduling through a smart app. Consumer sentiment around the GE Opal 2.0 is mixed, with many users praising the delightful nugget ice it produces. One user stated, "it has the side tank... I can’t walk by it without grabbing a handful and munching to be honest." However, frequent maintenance and reliability concerns were common, as another user noted, "Anyone thinking of buying an opal don’t do it they’re basically disposable." In conclusion, while the GE Profile Opal 2.0 is loved for its enjoyable ice texture and convenience, potential buyers should be aware of the maintenance requirements and variable reliability. It may be recommended for those who prioritize nugget ice but are willing to handle upkeep.

I like the ice from the opal ice maker. It takes frequent maintenance cleaning (every 1-2 weeks with the hard water in my area) even when using filtered water, but those chewy nuggets are terrific.

Positive Feedback

I’ve had many nugget ice makers. Every single one will fail in about 10 months. Make sure to get the warranty and get another 10 months with the new one they’ll send.

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Chewy nugget ice is highly praised.

Nugget Ice Maker Recommendation Was convinced I was going to go with the GE Opal and then started reading the reviews. Seems SO hit and miss with issues.
Wouldn’t recommend the GE Opal. Had one before and had a lot of issues with it. I bought a [Homelabs nugget ice maker from Amazon](https://icemakerworld.com/best-countertop-nugget-ice-maker/), and it's been great so far—super reliable and makes excellent nugget ice.
I have the GE opal 2.0. It has the side tank. I just use tap water, and we have hard water. I do a clean cycle on it every Saturday and never had any issues. I’ve had it about a year now, sometimes it makes a funny squeaking noise that drives my husband batty but I just use compressed air to blow it out and it’s fine. Mine runs all day long, I use it consistently, I can’t walk by it without grabbing a handful and munching to be honest. When it dies, I will 100% be buying another. It’s my favorite purchase ever.
Convenient ice making without external water source
Best thing ever.
So there is no external water source, but it makes ice? What is this magic?
Positive experiences with internal water dispenser
It’s been great, and has extra shelf space in the left door where the ice maker goes in most new models.
Seconding that it’s great. Going on six years, no leaks at all.
No issues reported with ice maker functionality
Our current icemaker in the door, and it works great, no issues.
I get ice clogs a couple times a year. Still like having the ice maker in the freezer door.
Convenient ice making without external water source.
I don’t get the need for Wi-Fi and extras.
It’s awesome. The company too is very helpful in debugging the issue with you.
Hopefully with a little elbow grease and descaler, we’ll have this thing running like a champ.
Using distilled water helps avoid descaling
We exclusively run distilled water in it so as to avoid the descaling process
I would just use tap water for cleaning. That's what I do.
Working condition praise
Seeing it in working condition and as WELL as it was working was an awesome feeling.
Convenient ice making without frequent refills
I'm looking to get an Opal 2.0 icemaker, but I see on the GE website that they are selling a new model (XPIOX3SCSS) with an "XL" (1 gallon) side tank, as opposed to the XPIO13SCSS model, which has a .75 gallon tank.
I love my Opal! I think it might just mean you don't have to refill it as much.
We love ours too. I think we have the .75 gallon tank. Not filling as often would honestly be pretty nice.
I've filled the side tank a couple times since then, and the bin is always (mostly) full.
Product works great for some users.
Mine works great.

Requires frequent maintenance cleaning.

I’ve had one Opal 2.0 for about four years now after buying it new. I clean it about once a month and with vinegar about 3 times a year. It’s working well, but I need to replace a part that I just ordered of eBay because it starts making a screeching sound a few days after I take it apart and lube things up on the auger.
Frequent maintenance cleaning required.
Pump fried itself.
GE ruined the Opal ice maker.
looking for other options now.
There’s only so much I can reach as it’s an Opal ice machine that makes nugget ice.
Product reliability issues reported.
That’s awful. I hear that so often. For the price, you would think it would actually last a long time.
Concerns about mold development if not cleaned properly
Going to go buy a GE.
Cleaning process requires a lot of water
I have rinsed at least 10 times. thx.
Product reliability issues reported
Anyone thinking of buying an opal don’t do it they’re basically disposable and GE does not service them or sell parts for them.
I feel you. I've gone through 4 Opals.
Requires frequent maintenance cleaning
I have the side tank but still seem to have to fill up the reservoir in the actual machine. Is that normal?
Difficult cleaning process
Before buying it, I would recommend you research cleaning it. It's not as easy as they make it sound.
Does not keep ice frozen in the bin
Anyone w/ a GE Opal ice maker know how to keep the ice cold? Seems like every couple hours the ice melts and I have to run the clean mode.
Sorry to say friend, but I believe that particular model does not keep the ice cold.
Wow. Thanks for looking into that for me. Good to know, but crappy design.
I have notice few ice makers; mine, friend, neighbors; do not keep them cold enough to solidify.
Product arrived broken
we've been enjoying the nugget ice for the last two years for free.
Product reliability issues reported frequently.
I’m on my second machine (maybe third?) replacement. It screetches so loud to make three cubes of ice.

Do all of these tanks allow the ice to stay in and sit on the counter?
Discussion about differences in tank sizes
I top off the tank for my 2.0 every couple-three days and would probably do the same even if I had a bigger tank.

Discussion about using distilled water for longevity.
Use distilled water in the opal and you’ll have no issues once it’s cleaned.

Discussion about high product cost
Expensive Opal ice machine for pennies on the dollar!

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about ice texture in other brands.
Does the Silonn ice maker make the soft, chewable nugget ice? I’ve been seeing where people say it makes bullet ice which isn’t the soft, chewable kind.
Concerns about mold if not cleaned properly.
These get moldy if not cleaned out properly.
General concerns about ice maker reliability
I have a countertop ice maker now.
Concerns about ice maker reliability.
My father in law knows two people who've had the same thing happen, and they both urge us not to buy a fridge with an ice maker, but it would be so convenient.
I bought a replacement on Amazon for $75 and replaced it myself in literally 5 minutes. There was one screw to remove and an electrical connector to plug in.
I didn't even know they made ones with the ice maker on the fridge side!
We intentionally bought a fridge without an ice maker on the front door of the fridge section because we heard they are the most common thing that breaks.
Discussion about the risk of water line issues.
This. In the door is especially bad.
I do not know the name but they have a water sensor that you place on the floor and if it detects water, it will alarm, send you a notification via cell phone.
Discussion about customer-side solutions for repairs.
Really?! How hard is that to install?
Discussion about ice melting and needing to be refrozen
Not sure if we have a different model but ours stays frozen.

Found out a game changer today after having thought I had a faulty sensor turned out the bin got a bit misshaped in the dishwasher- my son got it hot again put it in the machine while hot and poof ice!!!!!
