Snoop's Take

The LEATHERMAN Signal is a versatile 19-in-1 multi-tool designed for outdoor enthusiasts, campers, and everyday carry (EDC) users. Built in the USA, it combines essential tools such as pliers, a knife, a saw, and a hammer into a compact and portable design, making it an ideal companion for any adventure. Consumer sentiment reflects a strong appreciation for the durability and functionality of LEATHERMAN tools. Users frequently mention, "Leatherman tools are well made and durable," highlighting their quality compared to alternatives. Additionally, many find the one-handed knife operation and the variety of tools convenient for frequent use, with one user stating, "If it's a tool I anticipate using frequently, then I'm going to spend the money for something I want to use every day." Considering the overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding its build quality, versatility, and design for outdoor applications, the LEATHERMAN Signal comes highly recommended for anyone seeking a reliable multi-tool for camping, hiking, and daily tasks.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Leatherman tools are worth the investment for daily use.
You will see it here a lot, Surge is king. Wave is the flagship best all around model.
I use it every day and it is made to be used.
Leatherman tools are designed for everyday carry (EDC).
I'll have one of em.
Leatherman tools are well made and durable.
The Leatherman is definitely very well made and feels better than the Gerber
Ever pinch your hand when using the pliers on the Gerber? Also is the locking piece on the gerber plastic?
High quality and well-built tools
Looking to buy a multitool, is Leatherman still good or is it just brand and you can get better ones
Very high quality and nicely made.
Convenient one-handed knife operation
I love the one handed knife operation and how the tools lock into place.
Useful tools for frequent use
If it's a tool I anticipate using frequently, multiple times a day, then I'm going to spend the money for something I want to use every day.
Versatile tool for multiple tasks
Everything except my expensive knives get a quick toothy touchup with the Wave+ diamond file.
They do little things and save time constantly.
Excellent tools for daily use
No, they are excellent tools.
I was gifted a Leatherman Wave about 15 years ago, have carried it and used it almost daily for most of that time.
Durable and withstands regular use
Never broke a leatherman.
High quality compared to alternatives
If your multitool reliably gets put in the same league as Victorinox you're doing something right.
Leatherman tools are designed for outdoor use
I hike, backpack, and camp a lot so I would like something to satisfy those needs but I also do volunteer trail maintenance work so it would be beneficial to go with something more than just a knife or something.
Useful for outdoor and emergency situations
Signal was the first Leatherman I bought for myself (though previously I had a Micra as a gift). I love my Signal, engineering-wise I think it's brilliant, but I've ended up seeing it more as something to keep in an emergency kit than in my daily carry.
Good for personal home DIY tasks
Most any Leatherman will do. But I have more than 6 pairs of different types scattered around the house and truck in case I find myself needing something quick.
Compact and portable for EDC
I have a Signal as my bike multitool for when I don’t take my EDC Free P4.
Leatherman tools are ideal for daily carry.
Which Leatherman Multi-Tool Should I Get? Hi everyone!
Depends what you’re using it for.
Various models cater to different user needs.
If you tell us a bit about what you want to use it for / your work / your hobbies we can give a more informed opinion.
Compact and lightweight design for outdoor use
What do you guys think about the leatherman Signal for Hikng and outdoors EDC? Remember that it is light, compact, has a carrabiner with a really tough hammer that you could even use to hammer nails and a thic and nice blade.
That's cool. I'm rather an outdoorsy person and having a some kind of heavy multitool just annoys me because I have one of these cheap multitools and it weights less then surge but still is a little too heavy to clip on my clothes.
I took mine out to a few camping trips. It works. I actually ended up using the hammer for some tent stakes and it worked well enough.
Leatherman tools are excellent for camping and outdoor activities.
Most Leatherman models are, but wave+ is by far my favorite tool ever owned.
Leatherman tools provide a balance of weight and functionality.
A little lighter, and designed for everything to be accessible with one hand.
Useful fire starter feature
The fire starter whistle thing is cool, but not cool enough that it is worth taking the whole other handle to store.
Compact and lightweight design
Just too heavy for edc.
it has nearly the same tools as the supertool , but is much lighter (~100g less)
Leatherman multitools are of higher quality
I personally feel that the Leatherman multitools are of higher quality, especially the blade steels.
Leatherman is significantly higher quality than Gerber.
Compact design allows for easy pocket carrying
Gerber multitools, so far, have been a good investment for me, but i would say go with the one you like more.
Leatherman tools are well-made and strong.
Good locking toolset, strong pliers, well made.
The Leatherman Signal is more of a "survival" tool.
Leatherman tools have useful knife features.
My budget is 150$ max. Pliers don't need to be too strong but having one like leatherman signal would be great.
Compact design for easy carry in outdoor settings.
It has served me well.
Compact size for portability
So I'm pretty disappointed to hear the bad reviews and want to know if any actual users and chime in w positive reviews.
Absolutely love the driver and hammer on the carabiner.
Useful for outdoor tasks
They're a bit of a compromise from the real things.
Opens like a butterfly knife easily with one hand, so pretty useful.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
The price point is considered high by some users.
The price point really hurts it. It takes it out of reach from an awful lot of people.
I feel like the price is what kills the Arc the most. Its what I cant see past and why I don’t personally have one so I cannot really speak on its functionality.
Some users question the warranty duration compared to other brands.
Are the warranty policies different in the US?
High price point compared to alternatives
Generally speaking, yes Leatherman is still worth the price tag. With rare exceptions, anything better, is more expensive.
Considered overpriced by some users
They are ~better than every other comparable multi tool imo. but they are also overpriced.
Sure they’re expensive but the prices of everything have skyrocketed over the past 5 years.
Quality issues reported with some models
the quality difference just isn't there.
cutting gives a more consistent thread end in my experiences hence not snapping it but yeah it was a easy cut and broke a leather man
Leatherman replaced for free minus shipping.
Complaints about replaceable cutter quality
the soft metal they use is sub standard. The rebar honestly surprised me with how good it is I bought one when they first released and it’s going strong as my main multitool since.
Knife quality is mediocre compared to dedicated knives
The Signal has an okay knife by multitool standards, but not by knife standards.
Some users find the weight and bulkiness of certain models excessive.
Too many tools and too massive in the hand.
Some users find it bulky
I feel like, when I compare it to my recent rebar and curl experiences, I'm surprised at the bulky outer-protrusions they designed into the free (and the Wave for that matter).

Okay i think im gonna get the surge then. Is it possible to switch the tools on it or remove them completly?
Discussion on various Leatherman models and their suitability for EDC
What's the top 5 EDC Leatherman multitools in your opinion?
A Skeletool is a great office EDC, it's very light and non-threatening.
The tools were way too short and didn’t nest well in the handle.
I can only speak to the ones I own, so I won’t comment on the Arc (yet): - 1. Curl: Most of the fun
Discussion on preferences for heavier multitools
It is heavier, for sure, but I think it’s worth it.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Users discuss alternatives for lighter multitools
once I got used to how thoughtlessly easy I can pull out the small tools on the free, I've not found anything light enough to be worth giving that up.
SOG PowerAccess comes in at 5.9oz. You lose the Free deploy mechanism, but it is probably one of the top contenders for capability to bulk ratio.
Discussion on 3D printing a Leatherman
I modeled and assembled this fully 3D printed Leatherman Charge Plus multitool (Ender 3 Pro with eSun PLA+)
So a PLAtherman?

Discussion on minimal tool preferences
I only need a good knife, pliers and the scissors in a pocket sized multi-tool.
I trust their plier strength far more than a Leatherman Squirt / Style PS.
Mention of alternative brands and models
Leatherman wingman
Mention of alternative brands and budget options.
The Cheap Gerber multitools are simply not very good.
Users express difficulty in choosing between brands.
I actually carry both an MP600 and a Leatherman… can’t honestly pick one over the other.
Comparisons with other brands and models
I prefer my Wave to both of them.
Comparisons between multitool brands
they're absolutely not near the quality of Leatherman
Wave+ is recommended for outdoor multitool needs
The Wave+ is the answer in about 99% of cases.
Inquiry about general usability for various tasks
Is leatherman signal a good first one? If it’s not can yall recommend any others?
Concerns about TSA agents' knowledge of rules
Completely my fault, and I always knew there might be a day when I had to say goodbye to this fabulous pocket tool, but here's a warning for anyone as ignorant as me!
Even if the blade is removable, nope not trusting my gear to a disgruntled agent having a bad day.
You never know when you're going to get that 1 stubborn person and you have to choose between throwing out your multitool and missing your flight.
They play with it for 5 minutes and say "this is pretty close to a blade next time we might confiscate it"
Discussion on warranty comparisons between brands
I see lot of almost unreal stories how leatherman customer service is great, how us it with vuctorinox?
I have Victorinox and Leatherman Multitools, and Victorinox is better quality and smoother operating to me.
The scissors just don’t cleanly cut braided line for some reason.
Discussion on preferences between different Leatherman models.
The right Leatherman/ multi tool I was trying to decide between the Leatherman Signal and Wave +.
I've used the wave+ so much I swear my muscles in my hand have adapted to the shape of it, so increasing the size of it was just not right for me.
Discussion about multitool preference between brands
Leatherman, or Gerber? [deleted]
Leatherman by far
Discussion on TSA regulations for multi-tools
Have you ever configured your multi-tool for carry-on travel and/or travel to other countries with stricter knife laws? Obviously, the blades and saw would need to be removed.
I fly with my Style PS all the time. No issues.
I've flown with my Gerber MP600 bladeless in my carry on for work several times around the US.
Even the so called 'bladeless' multi-tools can get rejected by the TSA.
Users discuss preferences for multitools based on specific needs.
I've never had a multitool. If you had any recommendations for a proper noob like me, please let me know.
I don't need pliers most of the time and the times I do I have dedicated pliers.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Unexpected mention of a baby food company relating to multitools.
Never in a million years would I have expected a baby food company to come up with such a perfect multitool.
Some users find multitools unnecessary for their needs.
it is essentially just an expensive fidget tot for me.
so then i 'hinted' to the wife that i would like a Surge for christmas. ;)
I pretty much only use pliers and phillips head.
Discussion about vintage Leatherman tools and their value
Paid $20 for 4 vintage leatherman multitools!
What a steal. And those are OLD Leatherman with the good plier jaws.
This mean something? My original leatherman says patent pending...
I have a patent pending leatherman sideclip my mom bought me in the 90s at an army surplus store.
