What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Longevity of low-voltage lights
the lumen output stays fairly strong and doesn't deteriorate below 70% until some time after 50,000 burn hours.
the low voltage stuff is ten times what you get with the solar stuff.
Easy to install and maintain
So my next purchase when I'm tried of walking down the walkway in the dark will be low voltage lights.
Buy once cry once. If you plan on living at your home for a good number of years, spend the money on quality.
Simple installation with transformer setup
the simplest is going to be the regular low voltage setup. just get a transformer with a photocell.
the simplest is going to be the regular low voltage setup. just get a transformer with a photocell.
Long-lasting performance of low-voltage lights
This. Exactly what I did and it's been going strong for 8 years.
Durable all-weather performance
Have you ever noticed that the Light Dragon's path loosely follows the Star Shaped Sky Islands?
Landscape lights too bright Hi, I think i may have messed up, but dont have recourse.
Outdoor lighting Looking to set up lighting outside our home to light up house and trees. What kind of lighting would be best for this?
I am obsessed with landscape lighting. Obsessed. We redid our front yard a few months back and I insisted on low voltage lighting throughout.
Effective 360° lighting coverage
Gradient falloff and a fade transition and you’re there. Very nice
Is there a go-to for outdoor led low voltage lighting? Working on my landscaping and wondering how to be control low voltage LED lighting.
Long-lasting performance beyond expectations
They still look great and I’m very happy with the warm white color, so I’ve yet to see a reason to upgrade.
Easy to add more fixtures over time
Easy to just add more later.
great quality!
Long-lasting performance with good heat dissipation
The voltage taps don't control Dimming. You need to plug directly into an outlet that is fed directl
Best option for landscape lighting
Honestly low voltage landscaping is the best option unless you really want/need color.
Good quality components are affordable
Traditional white low voltage is super easy and inexpensive for good quality components.
Easily integrates with smart plugs
No problems at all.
No problem at all.
Low voltage lights are easy to install
LV for sure is the best solution for most cases, but you can have LV and color changing if you so desire
Good quality components
Trust me cheap lights are not worth the headache, you will waste so much money on lamps because the fixtures keep leaking till you eventually leave it all abandoned in your yard.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Exposed bulbs cause glare and discomfort
Those exposed bulbs would give me a migraine
Color is definitely more expensive, no question about that.
I highly encourage everyone to invest in low voltage lighting for their yard.
It looks nice but we live in a dark sky community and all lighting should be faced downwards.
Issues with solar lights
I'm considering biting the bullet and getting a low-voltage lighting setup to avoid having to reinstall and then fill landfills with cheap solar crap.
Complex installation requirements for low voltage lights
You need to use their extension cables (you can’t just run 16/2 anywhere in the yard where you need it).
Incompatibility with dimmers
You cannot use a dimmer with a landscape transformer that includes a photocell and other programming functions.
The problem is that the dimmer chops up the AC to the transformer (like distortion) and can make noise.
Glare from exposed bulbs causes discomfort
Glare strains the eye and ruins the scene. Any installer worth their salt tries to limit it as much as possible, so intentionally installing glary fixtures is considered a sin.
Color changing lights are expensive
Maybe I’m misunderstanding, Hue outdoor lighting *is* LV, and rather expensive.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on lifespan and sealing of integrated vs. drop-in lights
A drop in led should have similar life span to an integrated in a basic landscape, shouldn’t it? Also will that same integrated fixture be available in ten years when the led goes?
In theory integrated will have a longer life span because they should be fully sealed. Integrated tend to have longer warranties.
The difference is that integrated are typically completely sealed, whereas drop in is relying on some sort of gasket system to prevent moisture from entering the circuitry.
Interesting. Thank you for sharing the info. I also prefer simple, and it's not so much that I need the lights to be "dimmable" but more like adjustable.
Concerns about aesthetic lighting design
I've seen lines of solar and low voltage lighting. It looks like a landing strip to me.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on landscape lighting design and resources
keeping getting wrapped around the axle of where to install lights, what to light up, what type of transformer, etc.
LED fixtures make the design and installation easier as they are more efficient and can run more fixtures per run than incandescent.
I'm wondering if you found any good resources for designing and implementing lighting.
Gonna try to copy your style
Discussion on combining LV with smart functionality
Like others have suggested, stick to a traditional LV landscape lighting setup, and just add smart functionality as needed.
Interest in combining LV with smart functionality
when the power comes on, come on. No sensor for ambient light or timer of its own.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Frustration with the pricing and availability of low voltage landscape lighting
Why is low voltage landscape lighting so overpriced and hard to come by? I can only find expensive garbage or higher quality stuff that’s not available in the USA or unavailable via retail.
I use LED landscape lights from Ali abs/eBay. Generics, they’re like $8 a pop. I lose one or two a year.
I have a mix of Moonrays lights, low $ spots from Amazon / eBay, LED strips, and a few other fixtures around my yard / decks.
Suggestions for alternative brands and suppliers
Look into Volt lighting. Great company
Most professionals are going with integrated fixtures which have their benefits over a drop in lamp style fixture.
I'm trying to find something more affordable than FX Luminaire... Thanks!
If we wanted to do a lot more lighting I for sure would do low voltage.
Discussion on wiring and installation techniques
Thank you. That’s all helpful information.
I tested my lights every 3 that I installed. I got to the end and I noticed that every few power cycles of my transformer that it would trip with it’s internal protection, the house panel breaker was not tripping nor do I have a GFCI outlet that I am plugged into outside.
the circuit is overloaded bc the cable is undersized
Every wire gauge / wattage table says 60 Watts can go up to 80 ft and I’m around 60ft.
Concern over the quoted pricing for installation
Thoughts on this landscape lighting quote? Obviously he has to be on a surplus to make money.
I guess it depends on how much trenching and wire running they have to do and if they have to bring in an electrician or get permits but just the way it looks from the quote it looks expensive.
I think I DIY’d that same setup for $400-$500 in Volt lights from Costco and a Sunday afternoon.
Discussion on DIY vs professional installation costs
Seems like I’m paying around $1500 for labor?
Feedback on alternative landscape lighting options
they’re absolutely beautiful and worth every penny imho.
Discussion on budget landscape lighting options
Was leaning toward VOLT but hoping to find something slightly cheaper but still high quality.
Discussion on dimmable transformers
Everyone is right that you can’t dim the transformer you bought - it really messes with the electronics.
I personally recommend running at 24 volts as it is more efficient (your current draw will be lower, which translates to a lower total wattage).
Consideration of cost for landscape lighting
That transformer look like a bargain at $40.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about light pollution
It looks good and all but I would love it if people would stop voluntarily contributing to light pollution.
Not looking for cheap, looking for something I can buy online and have shipped to me.
Frustration with the frequency of similar yard posts
I feel like I have seen this yard posted a lot of the past year or so.
Haven’t posted it since I don’t think.
Frustration with connecting smart outlets to transformers
Interesting. I have a smart outdoor outlet and I was a little concerned to use that with a transformer.
