What do y’all think of Volt lighting? I’m Going to be doing some low voltage outdoor lighting.
Solid, thank you!
no complaints... they've been pretty much hands-off the entire time (aside from the occasional bulb replacement, but that's the cheap LED's fault not theirs). World of difference compared to the old malibu plastic crap at my last place.
Seems pretty good so far, 4 ish years in.
Durable performance over years
This. Exactly what I did and it's been going strong for 8 years.
Positive feedback on the path lights
i like the path lights.
Ability to adjust the angle of the lights
You can adjust the angle. I had just finished when I took this pic, I may move them later during spring when there is more plant growth

the low voltage stuff is ten times what you get with the solar stuff.
Low-voltage lights are easy to install.
So my next purchase when I'm tried of walking down the walkway in the dark will be low voltage lights.
Simpler installation with low voltage setup
the simplest is going to be the regular low voltage setup.
the simplest is going to be the regular low voltage setup. just get a transformer with a photocell.

Concerns about placing lights to avoid shining into windows
You don’t ever want to shine lights into your windows.
My personal opinion is ditch the lights entirely.
Concerns about light pollution from spotlights
Light pollution is the new hot topic. Light disrupts the wild life and makes neighbors livid, so have it on only when you are outside enjoying the area.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on the lifespan and sealing of integrated vs drop-in fixtures
A drop in led should have similar life span to an integrated in a basic landscape, shouldn’t it? Also will that same integrated fixture be available in ten years when the led goes?
Integrated tend to have longer warranties.
The difference is that integrated are typically completely sealed, whereas drop in is relying on some sort of gasket system to prevent moisture from entering the circuitry.
Discussion about flashlight brands and their performance

Great list.
What is the reasoning in choosing these over a LedLenser? Excuse my lack of knowledge in flashlights
Hi, I'm not so familiar with lights ans was curious why surefire isn't on your list? Only reason I can guess is lack of value?

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on DIY landscape lighting resources
I'm wanting to attempt my backyard/front yard, but keep getting wrapped around the axle of where to install lights, what to light up, what type of transformer, etc.
I would recommend to spend a bit of time learning and then make a design or two.
I'm starting my own landscape lighting journey and I'm wondering if you found any good resources for designing and implementing lighting.
Exploration of smart plugs for landscape lighting
The connections are always the weak points, so I tend to prefer two wires vs a splice, but there are ways to do it well.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Concerns about the availability and cost of low voltage landscape lighting
Why is low voltage landscape lighting so overpriced and hard to come by?
Curiosity about the power source of the lights (wired vs solar)
Is it wired or solar powered? If wired, how did you connect it to your home power?
Discussion on DIY landscape lighting costs
Thoughts on this landscape lighting quote? Obviously he has to be on a surplus to make money.
I DIY’d that same setup for $400-$500 in Volt lights from Costco and a Sunday afternoon.
Seems like I’m paying around $1500 for labor?
Concerns about pricing for professional installation
To me, that looks like an "I don't want to do this job" quote.
I’ll do it for 4,500
Ill do it for 4450
Most professionals are going with integrated fixtures which have their benefits over a drop in lamp style fixture.
Discussion about choosing appropriate transformers for landscape lighting
300W, unless you plan significant expansion in the future. Rule of thumb is bulb wattage plus 20% margin minimum.
And yes, go with one that has 12v and 15v options, won't hurt and easy to fix things if your runs are dropping the voltage too much.
The big difference is the slim line is 12 & 15V, while the multi-tap gives me 12V, 13V, 14V and 15V. So I need to have that level of granularity?
Just put all runs on one 300w transformer. Your system is small enough and the runs short enough that you can do that.
Discussion about lighting setups and transformer wattage
Just make sure the wattage doesn’t exceed the wattage on the transformer. It’s simple math!
No code requirements for low voltage lighting. Just make sure your systems are closed and you have strong connections with all of your lights.
Discussion about timer usage for lighting
I can see that, I recommend using a timer with photo cell as well.
Discussion on alternative path/spot lights from Costco
We bought 40+10 of the atomi path/spot lights from Costco and are absolutely loving them.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about light pollution from outdoor lighting
It looks good and all but I would love it if people would stop voluntarily contributing to light pollution.
Discussion about durability of solar lights
They're so cheaply made that they only hold up a couple of seasons.
We settled for the cheap ones but they all broke within a few months.
As a former butthead kid, I’ve broken a few playing football across the neighbors lawns.
Challenges with plastic spikes in outdoor lighting
The plastic spikes are crap so I got dowel rods of the correct diameter, cut them to length, hammered them far into the ground, and slid the lights over them.
Discussion on light pollution concerns
Those exposed bulbs would give me a migraine
Negative experiences with solar lights
I bought the cheap ones.
Concerns about the installation of low-voltage wiring.
Thank you. That’s all helpful information.
Concerns about compatibility with smart outdoor outlets
Interesting. I have a smart outdoor outlet and I was a little concerned to use that with a transformer.
Challenges with installation using extension cables
How are not as easy as just plugging and you’re set.
