Featuring adjustable hip and leg straps, this harness allows for a tailored fit, ensuring that climbers can enjoy their experience without being weighed down. Consumer sentiment largely highlights the harness's comfort and adjustability, with many users noting that "Mammut harnesses are super comfy and adjustable." It is particularly praised for its suitability for various thigh sizes and its effective wear indicators that enhance safety. However, some users have expressed concerns regarding the gear loops and the potential need to retire the harness prematurely, indicating that sizing can be a challenge for first-time buyers. Overall, the Mammut 4 Slide Climbing Harness is recommended for climbers looking for a reliable and comfortable option, especially for indoor climbing, while being mindful of sizing complexities and gear loop functionality.

Comfortable fit once adjusted properly

I would recommend Hard is Easy.
Great for the price.
Good for indoor climbing
You’re lucky you have REI. They’ll have everything you need and they only carry reputable stuff.
First harness Hi everyone!
Good for various thigh sizes due to adjustable legs
Try and get the same or very similar to your rental harness as you're already familiar and comfortable in that.
Comfortable and adjustable harness
Mammut harnesses are super comfy and adjustable.
Plastic tie-in protector reduces wear
I like mammut harnesses because they have a plastic tie in protector which is supposed to reduce wear.
Comfortable for extended wear
if i'm helping someone project a route, i'd rather have a nice comfy harness on so that if they hangdog it isn't so bad.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Gear loops may not suit all users
The leg loops don’t have adjustable buckles, but there is a piece of elastic that will stretch to fit your legs.
I cannot find a harness that fit me! Petite climber issues...plz help... Currently I am using the DMM trance harness in xxs which fits ok but not great.
I HATE it when I can’t pull a harness tight enough on my waist, a rack will leave big bruises on my hipbones.
I have it and hate it. Not a big deal for indoor where I don’t have anything other than a belay device and some lead tags, infuriating outside.
Concern about the need to retire harness too early
Generally my rule is to retire gear if it does not feel safe or gives me justifiable reason to doubt it, just a personal way of life i suppose.
Sizing charts can be confusing for first-time buyers
I'm struggling with the sizes on the charts.
Sizing can be confusing for buyers
My body size has changed, and while the harness still fits, I want to size up.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
All harnesses in the U.K. are tested for effectiveness
All harnesses in the U.K. undergo the same tests, so effectiveness wise should all be the same.
Discussion about various brands and models of harnesses
Thank you!
Discussion about various harness brands and their comfort
Great inexpensive all around harness that can last you many years.
Discussion on preferences for different types of climbing harnesses
More importantly do you guys think its worth it to have separate harnesses for different applications?
You can almost always use the "wrong" harness for any type of climbing, so I'd say go with a harness for what you expect to be doing most of the tine.
General chatter on harnesses from various brands
I think the Momentum is as good as any of them.
I like the BD Ozone because it fits me well; it's lighter, more comfortable, and has fewer frills than many other harnesses.
Discussion about comfort in harnesses
Black diamond is a good place to look, relatively cheep.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Fit-dependent nature of climbing harnesses
For harnesses, make sure to get one that is rated for rock climbing, designed by a climbing company, sold by a shop that sells climbing gear.
I would recommend to try both if you can - certainly at least the shoes, those are impossible to pick online if you don't know what would fit.
Importance of trying on harness for fit
No one else has your body, so only you can try this on to make sure it fits comfortably and is the safest for you.
Discussion about the price point
Yeah wasn’t this 50% off? I looked at this also. Seemed solid.
Best climbing harness Hi! I want to buy a climbing harness for my boyfriend, have you got any advice?
Discussion on the difficulty of finding the right harness fit
Haha we are same! My partner gets so mad that I have to try on all the shoes and all the harnesses wherever we go! I’m still looking for my Goldilocks almost a decade in :(
I have the Edelrid Jayne III in size S and like it a lot! The gear loops stick out a lot which you might like.
Waist belt : 65-71 cm Leg loops : 48-53 cm I know it’s not 62 or 47 but it should work over clothing?
Misty Mountain will custom make a harness.... I would go that route.
Discussion on the importance of trying on harness for fit
doing these things showed me which ones were less likely to be uncomfortable in one way or another.
Try it on and sit in it.
Variety of brands and models discussed for comfort
I also have massive thighs! I would recommend the Black Diamond Technican harness, the legs are very adjustable.
There seem to be a few harnesses out there fitting 28 inch thighs.
Discussion about the difficulty in finding larger harnesses
Bigger harnesses So I’m not a small climber- size 18/20. I can only find Mammut harnesses in my size.
I think I wear a Black Diamond mens harness. I bought it when I was a size 22, and I've almost shrunk out of it, and I'm around 18.
I’m also an 18/20 and wear the black diamond mens harness. It fits with room to spare and feels sturdy.
I'm pretty thicc in the rear and thighs, and around a size 18, and the bd men's harness barely slides over my butt.
Discussion about harnesses that open at the waist for big hips
XXL Harness with Waist that Opens.
I am not plus size but someone I know is and swears by the Misty Mountain Cadillac harness!
You can push most to open but for more safety, the brands really try to not make it openable.
Any harnesses with the standard manual double back secure type will completely come apart over the waist.
Discussion about the difficulty of finding the right harness fit
Make sure you can move the leg loops high enough up your leg and tighten them comfortably.
Discussion about trying on harnesses for fit
I’ll post an update when I find a harness!
Various recommendations for climbing harnesses
I've actually lost like 60 pounds (unrelated to climbing) and it's still great.
Second recommendation for the corax, I really like that it has the buckles and straps on both sides of the center at the waist instead of only on one side.
I recommend either the Petzl Corax or the Black Diamond Momentum 3S.
Advice to try on harnesses for fit
Thanks for all the tips! I'm probably going to get a Arc'Teryx R300 after reading the thread.
Make sure the thing fits well first-- then worry about all the other stuff.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on various harness brands and their comfort
Harness recommendations?! Looking to belay more and I hate renting equipment- any recommendations?
Just switched from the black diamond solution to the petzel Luna. It’s a lot more comfortable, has a haul loop, and it’s purple! If you’re just using it for top roping in the gym, no harm going with the black diamond.
Black Diamond Solution is the best gym harness I've found so far. It balances comfort and weight really well IMHO.
Try on a bunch of different brands in a couple different sizes and styles (try both men's and women's also, the difference is usually in the angle of the waist loops, whip of the leg straps and loops). Find one that's for you detachable leg straps are absolutely wonderful for not having to take the whole harness off.
Discussion on wear and retirement of climbing gear
Now, Mammut says that when you see “red” you should retire the harness but compared to a new one which doesn’t show any red web, mine shows it only at the end of the sewn belay loop.
Like the other commenter said, wear is on the cut end past the bar tack, i.e. not weight-bearing.
