Snoop's Take

The Munchkin® STEP™ Diaper Pail Powered by Arm & Hammer is a state-of-the-art solution designed to lock in odors while disposing of used diapers with a patented self-sealing system. It combines innovative odor control with compatibility for multiple refill options, ensuring your nursery stays fresh. Consumers rave about its odor-blocking prowess; one user noted, “Yeah the munchkin one we have is really nice because it snaps close when they’re full and you don’t smell anything.” However, chatter persists about its challenging opening mechanism and less-than-stellar bag capacity. Some even mention that while it excels at containing smells when closed, it struggles a bit when left open, dampening what is otherwise an effective design. Overall, the consensus is that this diaper pail delivers robust odor control, making it a recommended option for parents prioritizing a fresh and hygienic nursery environment, despite a few minor usability quirks.

Yeah the munchkin one we have is really nice because it snaps close when they’re full and you don’t smell anything - but they’re SO expensive for them.

Positive Feedback

I don't have the UV one but the regular one claims similar and we definitely need to change it at least once a week , which definitely isn't as many diapers as it claims.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Effective odor containment when closed
Yeah the munchkin one we have is really nice because it snaps close when they’re full and you don’t smell anything - but they’re SO expensive for them.
Mind you, I've only been using mine for 9 months so maybe it takes a few years and/or more than one kid to get it to rank status 😂
We have a Munchkin pail that twists and seals after every diaper and have never had a problem.
I’ve seen other people mention this before which I find unusual because mine never smells (but baby’s poop certainly does)!
Overall effective performance
Munchkin UV Diaper Pail Bags - Anyone actually get what it claims?
If peeps are worried about smell, grab a Odoban cartridge and place that in the bottom of the pail and voila grossness is gone!

Where it needs some work!

Lower-than-expected bag capacity
I don't have the UV one but the regular one claims similar and we definitely need to change it at least once a week , which definitely isn't as many diapers as it claims.
Odor leakage and buildup when left open
Overall it’s a great thing, but opening it is a freaking nightmare.
I noticed that if you strap them closed tightly with the wipes and w/e else it contains the smell better.
Lack of available compostable bag options
Compostable diaper pail bags for Munchkin pail Can anyone recommend an alternative to Baia compostable bags for Munchkin diaper pails?

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Effective odor containment when the pail is closed
It contains the smell really well and only has a small opening for the diaper so the shit particulate in the can doesn’t get released too badly when you’re throwing one out.
Zero smell when closed. Smell lingers for maybe 2 or 3 minutes when opened.
Poop flowers 🤢
Never realized how much the smell combination made me feel sick
Diaper pails help contain odors compared to regular trash
At least with a pail the whiff is contained to the number of diaper changes (or none if you get a fancy one).
I can’t imagine not having it.
Preference for airflow design in diaper pails for cloth diapers
Strongly advise to *not* get one of those airtight pails like the Ubbi.
No, the best dry pail is an open and airy laundry basket with plenty of holes
But air flow is your friend.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Flexible bag options allow use of regular trash bags for cost savings
i like that it doesn’t all come out in one long diaper snake but instead we get the individual scented bags, wrap that diaper up and throw it in the pail
They come in fun colors and you're not locked into a certain brand of trash bags.
Not needing to buy special bags is a 10/10.
Yes get the Ubbi for the convenience of garbage bags alone!
Using baking soda as a deodorizer in the pail
I also stick one of those refrigerator baking soda boxes in the bottom (outside of the bag) to help absorb some smell
Baking soda is just a good deodorizing agent, among other useful things.
Relocating the diaper pail to mitigate room odor
We stopped using it 😅 for this very reason.
The stench was staying in her room too long and grossing us out.
My exact experience 😅
Using alternative wrapping methods (e.g., sandwich or doggy bags) to contain odors
Same here, and I collect used sandwich bags and anything plastic to wrap diapers in before dumping them in the garbage.
Same, I just use doggy poop bags for the poopy diapers and they immediately go outside to be trashed.
Tube hack for easier bag removal
Anyone else feel like they were about rip the bag of nuclear waste in half trying to remove it?
I gotta try this, been loving the ubbi but that’s the only problem I’ve been having with it.
This will be useful in a regular kitchen garage can too
It works for other types of trash cans too, if you frequently have issues pulling trash bags out of a can you can use the tube trick for that too.
Abandoning diaper pails for alternative disposal
Because I emptied it all the time anyways, so it doesn’t have time to linger and stink.
Us too, we have a little trash upstairs we use too but it’s a normal trash can and we just empty it often anyways.
Diaper pails were awful.
Alternative diaper disposal solutions
We just use a regular garbage can with a lid that you step to open.
Unfortunately our dog would get into it if not put away properly and with our very diaper prolific twins we’ve put it to the test.
I'm too lazy/tired to change a bin with every poopy diaper (especially in the middle of the night), and I have dogs so the sliding lid is the bomb.
I just started noticing a smell at almost 10months, but only for a few seconds when the lid is open because my girl has rank poop. 😂

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Poor odor control reported in some diaper pails
Mine smelled all the time.
I got rid of my Ubbi after 9 months because the nursery permanently smelled like poo.
I have a diaper genie and I swear just an open trash can smells less bad.
We’ve had it for a year and a half and smells seem to linger more easily these days so I may give it a more thorough spray down and then leave it outside while empty to air out and let the cold kill some additional bacteria.
Durability issues noted with diaper genie designs
It was such a waste of money!
Our genie did last us two kids, but it was on its last legs and I had to Jerry rig it to keep it functional
