Snoop's Take

The Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail is a high-quality diaper disposal system designed to lock in odor while simplifying your nursery routine. It uses powder-coated steel construction and a sliding childproof lid to ensure that unpleasant smells remain contained. Consumer sentiment is as polarized as you might expect from a product that promises perfection. Many users cheer its performance with remarks like “there is no smell leaking what so ever,” and rave about not having to deal with proprietary bags, while detractors lament persistent odors during bag changes and even note rust issues when water gets inside. The reviews capture a lively debate – some declare it a lifesaver, others a stinking inconvenience – painting a vivid picture of real-world usage. In the end, while the pail garners significant praise for its odor control and cost-effective design, its occasional shortcomings during routine changes temper its acclaim. For parents in need of a dependable diaper disposal option, the Ubbi pail is recommended, provided you keep a close eye on cleaning practices.

It contains the smell really well and only has a small opening for the diaper so the shit particulate in the can doesn’t get released too badly when you’re throwing one out.

Positive Feedback

we empty our Ubbi pail regularly, and no matter what we do, it smells like death in there.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Effective odor containment when closed
It contains the smell really well and only has a small opening for the diaper so the shit particulate in the can doesn’t get released too badly when you’re throwing one out.
Zero smell when closed.
I never feel assaulted by it.
When you empty the garbage, the smell from that bag is absolutely disgusting.
No special bags needed – works with regular trash bags
i like that it doesn’t all come out in one long diaper snake but instead we get the individual scented bags, wrap that diaper up and throw it in the pail
Ubbi with regular trash bags. Do it.
Locking lid provides childproof safety
It was very helpful to be able to lock it when my first was super curious and was able to open trash cans.
I have a ubbi and have no regrets.
Loved the ubbi in the baby stage, love it even more in the toddler stage because the lid locks.
Superior performance compared to alternative models
It somehow holds the smell in better and not having to deal with the stupid refill bags is wonderful. Also, the metal probably won’t just break in half like my plastic diaper genie did when my husband tripped over it…
No special bags required for use
Not needing to buy special bags is a 10/10.
It's low maintenance, you can use Costco garbage bags, it can store a lot of dirty diapers, does not stink and it opens easily with one hand.
Yes get the Ubbi for the convenience of garbage bags alone!
No special bags required – uses regular trash bags
It also takes regular trash bags and not special bags, so there’s no added expense besides the can itself.
I like that you can use a regular bag and I think it contains the smell better than a regular trash can.
No proprietary bags, good size, easy to open, easy to change bags, and it doesn't stink up my house.
Yes! Same. I love that it uses generic bags.
Effective odor control when closed
While I didn't love the diaper pail I felt it kept the stink to a minimum.
Been using it for 6 months and no smells aside from opening it of course.
Right.. my Ubbi literally never smells lol and we have a Kendamil baby so his poops are RANCID.
That's like saying let's get rid of our fridge because the food gets warm if you leave the door open

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Persistent odor issues when the pail is opened or over time
we empty our Ubbi pail regularly, and no matter what we do, it smells like death in there.
I got rid of my Ubbi after 9 months because the nursery permanently smelled like poo.
Mine smelled all the time.
smells seem to linger more easily these days so I may give it a more thorough spray down and then leave it outside while empty to air out and let the cold kill some additional bacteria.
Risk of rust if water gets inside during cleaning
read the instructions and don’t let the inside get wet because I washed the inside out and it rusted lol.
Persistent odor issues when opening or changing the pail
I like our ubbi for the most part, but boy does it reek when we change it. And it’s not just the stuff in the bag, the smell stays in the pail for awhile.
I’ve had an ubbi through two kids and you’re so right, it is putrid.
The Ubbi locks in the smell, but it still has a smell.
Odor leakage when open or during bag change
No smell if it’s closed but if it’s left open or when changing you definitely can smell it, but I would imagine most pails would do that?
It holds it in, but mannnnnnnnn when that bag needs to be changed out? Yuck!
Ours holds the stink really well! Only time it smells for us is when we’re changing out the bag which I’d assume is true for all diaper pails
Like yeah, it does smell because there's poopy diapers in it for a few days, but I don't find it revolting when I have to change bags.
Odor issues when opened and lingering odor
All the reviews talk about how it doesn’t smell at all but ours STINKS.
What magic diaper pail full of diapers doesn’t smell when open???
Yeah mine smells when it's opened, but not when it's closed.
I hated the ubbi it stank to high heaven. I had to throw out the bag after the poop diaper or else it would stink up the room with the lid closed.
Limited capacity for cloth diapers
I have an Ubbi with the cloth liner. I'm pretty happy with it but I have to empty it into a larger bag in my laundry area often because I feel like it only holds like 5 diapers before its full.
I find the ammonia smell is really strong by day two when I go to wash (although maybe that’s inevitable?), and I wish it had a bigger capacity.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Alternative disposal methods avoiding putting poopy diapers in the pail
Eventually we stopped putting poop diapers in there and the smell went away.
I just cannot stand poop smells at the moment.
We just put them in a trash can outside instead.
No cleaning, sanitizing, even days in the sun (!) would keep the smell from returning right away.
Alternative diaper disposal methods offered instead of using diaper pails
I just ended up throwing diapers in the kitchen trash. Because I emptied it all the time anyways, so it doesn’t have time to linger and stink.
Us too, we have a little trash upstairs we use too but it’s a normal trash can and we just empty it often anyways.
Diaper pails were awful.
No poop smell in our house and it’s super low effort.
Alternative cloth diaper disposal using open laundry baskets
We store our soiled diapers in an open laundry basket in the bathroom.
That seems to be the trend I'm heating with open storage. We don't have a ton of room, but I think preventing odor is more important than worrying about a laundry basket in the way!
DIY odor control hacks
Try adding a fabric softener sheet inside the garbage bag and at the bottom of the ubbi underneath the garbage bag.
I have one, I love it, but it does stink so bad when it’s open!
Alternative cloth diaper pail solutions
Strongly advise to *not* get one of those airtight pails like the Ubbi.
It’s wider than the Diaper Genie so holds cloth better.
No, the best dry pail is an open and airy laundry basket with plenty of holes
But air flow is your friend.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Debate over the necessity of a dedicated diaper pail versus using a steel trash can
Baby diapers smell bad even if you are taking the trash out once or twice a day.
Once she started solids, her poop started to actually stink, and the regular trash can did NOT keep any smells in 🫠.
It only stinks for a few seconds after opening it.
The Diaper Genie doesn't keep the poop smell contained, IMO.
Debate over whether diaper pails are necessary versus using regular trash cans
Why can’t we just throw diapers in the regular garbage? Seems like another useless gadget people hype up?
If it’s poop, I’ve always just put it in a grocery bag and then put it in the trash.
Diapers will smell even if wrapped in plastic bags (which is wasteful) and everytime you open the common kitchen/room/etc trash you will get a whiff of stink even if you take out the trash every day.
Maybe it’s just me but I’d rather not smell 💩 sitting in my trash can. Keep that shit confined.
