Snoop's Take

Speedball Printmaster Paper is a high-quality printmaking paper designed for block and relief printing techniques. With its archival quality and lightweight construction, it is ideal for students and everyday use, making it an excellent choice for artists exploring various printmaking methods. Users have expressed positive sentiments regarding its affordability and versatility. Many appreciate that "it’s not criminally expensive to get into" printmaking, with some noting it works well for printing on cotton tees and patches. However, there are mixed feelings about the ink quality, as users have mentioned, "the prints look uneven when I press them," highlighting the need for careful technique and material selection. Despite some challenges with ink transparency and consistency, Speedball Printmaster Paper is generally recommended for those looking to practice and enjoy printmaking. Its affordability and suitable design for multiple mediums make it a worthwhile investment for beginners and experienced artists alike.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Good value for price
it’s not criminally expensive to get into. it’s a very fun medium to play with :)
Good for everyday printmaking
I've been using the speedball blockprinting ink for years now but want to transition to something better.
Good for printing on cotton tees and patches
They’re pretty decent for patches and cotton tees, but don’t print as well on rougher materials i’ve noticed!
Affordable for multiple blocks
Plus it’s pretty affordable for four 9x12 blocks.
Speedball ink works great for linocut on textiles
I use Speedball Screen Printing Fabric ink for linocut on tee shirts and it's been working great since I figured out a good process.
Good crisp printing with Gamblin and Speedball fabric inks
I like that ink a lot, it gives good crisp printing on textiles.
Good results with smoother paper
Might be the paper, thinner paper does better imo.
As others have said, using smooth and thin paper is the way to go.
Speedball fabric relief ink has better consistency for printing.
It has a better consistency than the silkscreen ink for printing Lino (obviously) but is still easy to clean with soap and water!
Using fabric Speedball ink can yield good results on shirts.
If you have fabric speed ball ink then yes it can work I’ve done many shirts with that.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Inks are quite transparent
I don't think either inks are opaque at all. I tried both and both were quite transparent.
Screenprinting ink does not yield good quality for relief printing
Well I tried it, and it was so pale.
It works, but the quality isn’t great.
Screenprinting ink tends to require overinking for acceptable results
You *can* get it to work, but it tends to be with overinking and looked bad.
The main ways I've seen it work alright is with small stamp sized pieces and printed like a stamp.
Prints look uneven with Speedball ink
all of my prints look uneven when I press them.
it was life changing.
Speedball ink quality not consistent on some papers
I really dread using speedball on it.
Prints look faded on thicker paper
The first few prints you're saturating the block, it'll print better after that.
Ink does not cover well on paper
Couldn't get the ink to cover well on black or white paper.
I'm only getting a thin coating of ink on paper, almost invisible.
Speedball inks can cause prints to become fuzzy after multiple uses.
I have a problem with the prints coming out "fuzzy" after five to six prints.
Water-based Speedball inks dry too quickly.
Waterbased inks dry too quickly.
Inconsistent print quality due to ink build-up.
I was having really inconsistent results until I radically experimented with how much ink I was rolling on.
Try reducing how heavily you re-ink the block, and every few prints, run it through the press 'dry'.
Speedball inks are difficult to work with.
Cheap water based block printing inks are the worst. Avoid the speedball ones too.
I switched to Akua (soy based) and I'm a thousand times happier.

Dampening paper helps ink transfer
just dampening the paper ever so slightly will significantly help the ink transfer.
Paper choice affects print quality
paper matters as much as ink.
Suggestions for extending drying time of water-based inks.
depending on the ink you are using, extenders like linseed oil might help extend drying times.
I do this all the time because I don't always have time to mess with oil, so I figured out how to make water based work for me.

Discussion on using thinner paper for better prints
I had no idea! I will definitely be finding some thinner paper haha.

Maybe add some white to make it more opaque?
I'm going to try this.
Discussion on using mica powder for metallic effects
The best thing to use is mica powder. It will reflect like metal.

You gave me very helpful tips to make me feel successful.
Hello, I'm new to printmaking and am looking for suggestions for kits or the proper tools to get started.
A Speedball brayer 4 or 6" probably ideal - there aren't loads of options at this price point.
Links to resources for teaching art
The Speedball linoleum cutters are a great beginner tool. One huge advantage of them is replacement tips are super cheap so you can just swap in a new tip when one gets dull.
Comparison of ink viscosity and application methods
Only way to find out is to test it on some scrap fabric, tell us the results because I too am curious how well this would work.
Discussion on where to buy printmaking materials
I’m a big fan of Speedball and Gamblin, but there’s just so many sites available to purchase their products from.
Not that their prices are bad but I use speedball super graphic black which I try to buy at a discount from local art stores.
For me, Dick Blick is the best intersection of cost and variety.
Mcclains and etsy for Japanese carving tools.
Tips shared for improving printing results
Ah yeah that's a bummer - if just going for black, I know Gamblin makes a popular textile one.
Preference for other brands like Cranfield for metallic inks
Grab some cranfield metallic inks, they cover very well.
Best results with darker fabrics for metallic inks
Dark colors work best — I stand on mine for pressure 😂.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Need for more ink when printing on fabric
When printing on fabric, I’ve found that I need wayyy more ink than I would for printing on paper.
Thanks! I used a lot more ink and the prints turned out great.
Also the first pass is always going to be under inked somehow.
Difference in properties between screen printing and block printing ink
I continue using speedball fabric ink. It's easier to just wait the drying days out than deal with the tediousness, for me.
Discussion on using incorrect ink types for printing
I know this isn't how it's meant to be used I wish I had returned it.
looks like this shirt is my new fabric testing grounds 🤣
Discussion on switching to alternative inks
It made a huge difference in the quality of prints.
Discussion on the challenges of using screen printing ink for block printing.
If you are hand printing, it can be a struggle to get the inking done well and for it all to print properly due to the materials of both the fabric and the short working time of acrylic.
Exploration of the challenges faced with Speedball inks.
I am enjoying blockprinting but I don't know of any other artists or studios that could help me troubleshoot like this.
