What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Effective traction on hard ice

Winter traction devices for winter hiking & backpacking? Which winter traction devices do you recommend, and what conditions and locations do you use them for?
Effective traction on ice
Katoolah microspikes. More expensive than others but they work extremely well, fit on basically any shoe/boot assuming you buy the right size, and ours have lasted years (and still going).
If the snow is consolidated and soft (late spring and summer) I don't use anything.
Would you recommend this style (with chains and spikes on the sole) or more of a small spikes like this with a rubber sole:
Effective traction on varied terrain
Depends on how much you intend to use them, and how far away from civilization, and on what kinds of slopes.
They are nice and yes L fits on 43, might be a little bit lose depending on shoe shape though.
I'm about to pull the trigger on Black Diamond Access micro spikes. Any good?
I have the Distance spikes and found them to be worthwhile. Even lighter than the access, but in general pretty similar.
Durable and long-lasting
I’ve owned them since they were released and will buy again when these are done.
Happy with performance and weight

Great traction for trail running
Looking to borrow some of your experience in finding the right pair.
The new Black Diamond line are the way to go, especially for trail runners and actual trail running.
Lightweight design
These are so light. Only 3.2 oz per pair.
I've had these for years, they're great.
Breathable toe cover design
Really interesting product considering how unpleasantly tight on my toes my Kathoola's rubber feel when wearing trail runners for 5+ hours hiking on packed snow/ice.
I looked hard at these at the trade show and I really liked the toe box and iirc a finger strap on the heel.
Durable materials
Very interetested in durability of the materials, per usual and might have to switch this winter.

Quality issues with construction
Mine fell apart immediately, so I can’t say their QA is very good.
Pocket cleats are garbage
The pocket cleats are garbage.
Pocket cleats are garbage. Except on hard packed trails, like winter trails in the Grand Canyon they’re great.
Limited traction for steep winter trails
This is the lightest and front traction only. I’d say this works as a just in case option but if I was headed towards a winter trail I would grab a version with heel coverage.
Slow to put on
I actually love the look of these and will probably try them out.
High price point
$99! Woof. That's pricy for micro spikes.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on varying trail conditions and their impact on traction needs
they saw a lot of snow melt run off last week. This week is much cooler so it has all hardened.
I then carry my spikes in my vest on long runs where I don't know the conditions up front.
Snow depth and conditions really makes the difference for me.
Discussion on the reliability of product reviews
This is a Fakespot Reviews Analysis bot. Fakespot detects fake reviews, fake products and unreliable sellers using AI.
Discussion on lightweight options
They're so much more lightweight, and right now I hate the idea of my traction device being heavier than my ice axe.
The Snowline Chainsen Trail spikes that LiteSmith sells are much lighter, my size M are 180g (6.34 oz).

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Preference for removable traction over spiked shoes
I personally don’t like spiked shoes. I like the ability to take my traction off, depending on how the trail changes.
They just give so much damn traction, I often put them on even if I don't think it is strictly necessary.
I haven't had any problems with 2'+ of snow; so just my preference.
Preference for spikeless designs
I like that spikeless design of YakTrax.
I mainly use Kahtoola microspikes, they work best on consolidated Styrofoam like snow which we get for most of the year out here.
Discussion on alternatives to Black Diamond Access Spikes
Reny's will have "Stabilicers" and "YakTrax" for sale. Both are good.
I have nexgrip boots and love them. I can flip down the traction to get into all wheel drive when needed and flip back when I walk into work or home.
ICEtrekkers Diamond Grip Traction System
Chainsen Trail Light. Something like 8oz for a full microspike. Why these are not more popular/prevalent I do not know.
Preference for spiked designs over cheaper alternatives
The kinda w chains etc will kill you. Get actual microspikes w spikes not cheapie boys
Common mention of other brands as alternatives
most common are Kahtoola or Hillsound microspikes
Discussion on microspike brand alternatives
Kahtoola makes quality microspikes. I've used them extensively without any failures like chains or rubber breaking.
I haven't used them for running though so maybe they'll work out fine.
Hillsound Trail Crampons (they are actually microspikes) are heavier than the Kahtoolas but have longer teeth and provide better traction.
I really like my Hillsound Trail Crampon Ultras. I use them for hiking and find they’re light, comfortable, and provide great traction.
Comparison to other traction options
I think they're a good idea if you really only expect a tiny (1-2 mile or 2-3 kilometer) fraction of your hike to be on low-angle snow or ice.
Interest in comparison with Kahtoola spikes
Curious how you feel about their sizing? I see that you use large in each but how well does that match up with your shoe size?
Kahtoola claims 10mm spikes, the BD ones claim 8mm. I’m curious how much that would translate to a difference in traction.
Comparison with other brands
3 models, the 'Access' version looks like the direct Kahtoola Microspike competitior.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Caution about using cleats indoors
Just please be careful and remove them before going inside.
Preference for spikes on harder terrain
Why are these better for harder terrain, what is the difference?
