Snoop's Take

The Yaktrax Pro Traction Cleats are designed to enhance stability and traction for walking, jogging, or hiking on snowy and icy surfaces. Featuring stainless-steel traction coils, these cleats provide secure grip and promote a natural stride, making them ideal for winter use. Consumer feedback highlights the Yaktrax Pro as a "game changer" for navigating slick surfaces, with many users noting their effectiveness on packed snow and ice. One user mentioned, "I’ve walked to the grocery store in them and can walk around in the store without taking them off," showcasing their ease of use and practicality. However, some users have raised concerns regarding durability, stating, "the yak trax would last me one season and break." Overall, while the Yaktrax Pro Traction Cleats receive positive remarks for their grip and usability in urban conditions, potential buyers should consider the durability concerns and may want to explore alternatives for more rugged or icy terrains.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Game changer for walking on slick surfaces
i got yaktrax last season and they were a *gamechanger*. can’t rec them highly enough
Yaktrax a game changer for walking around on possible slick areas like sidewalks.
Positive overall experience with YakTrax
Love our YakTrax. Why don’t folks like them?
Game changer for icy conditions
Ice cleats/spikes for shoes, any recommendations? With the recent warm up and then freeze in my area, the trails are pretty hard and icy.
It depends on whether you're running in snow and ice or just ice over hardpack.
Provides stable footing on snow and ice
I found that my current cheap spikes, could not even get into the ice.
Great for walking on slick surfaces
My Yaktrax have been great. I’ve walked to the grocery store in them and can walk around in the store without taking them off.
Spikeless design is appreciated
Both look great! I like that spikeless design of YakTrax.
Good traction for walking on ice
Both are good.
Works well on packed snow
I have yaktrax, but don't like them.
Super easy to use
These are my go to reccomendation because they are super easy to use, and very cheap.
Works well for running in winter conditions
I use the yak tracks to run and I have a pair that has lasted me two winters
Great traction on snow and ice
They are great on snow and ice, but be really careful if you are running on mixed terrain especially with rocks.
Durable for trail running
I think yaktrax run is more durable since the rubber is thicker.
Versatile for different conditions
I'm still a noob to running, but I really like running in the cold weather and want to continue training through the winter.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Durability concerns with Yaktrax
Anything that depends on a chain or a piece of rubber underfoot is not going to hold up in the real world for long.
I use Kahtoola the most frequently—the nano spikes are usually more than enough and they don’t really interfere with my foot strike.
No on the Yaktrax, they break easily. Yes to kahtoola exo/microspikes though! No need to buy an ice specific shoe.
Cheaper and I would argue better all around. I’ve never had a pair of yaxtrax or spikes that I felt actually worked well for running.
Spikes may not grip well on hardpack ice
I've never found EXO Spikes or YakTrax to be helpful (or durable) enough to handle running around here.
Slippage on minimalist shoes
they all slip off of any minimalist shoe after a few minutes of running.
Is it comfortable to run on those even when they are in place?
What seems to be causing that slippage?
Durability issues reported
my nanos have held up very well.
Not suitable for trail use or ice compared to microspikes
Yaktrax work great on pavement or regular city winter conditions.
Less effective on bare pavement
I don't like running in Yaktrax.
Durability issues with Yaktrax
The yak trax would last me one season and break.
Not recommended for hiking or strong ice conditions
They don’t do well on ice/ packed snow at all.
These are not recommended as they are not strong enough.
Best used in urban environments
Yak trax are best used in the city. I prefer the micro spikes.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about different ice cleat options
Yes I salt everything but there are times it's not enough.
Buy once cry once.
ICEtrekkers Diamond Grip Traction System
Discussion about different types of Yaktrax and their effectiveness
The Yaktrax spikes work far better on flat ice than the coil type.
I wear the Yaktrax Diamond Grip for work and those work in any condition I've encountered in northern MN.
+1 for these, you can sometimes get them on sale after winter is over for the next year too.
Yep, i changed to these too. They are pretty great!!
Discussion about different winter traction devices
Winter traction devices for winter hiking & backpacking? Which winter traction devices do you recommend, and what conditions and locations do you use them for?
I mainly use Kahtoola microspikes, they work best on consolidated Styrofoam like snow which we get for most of the year out here.
They just give so much damn traction, I often put them on even if I don't think it is strictly necessary.
I haven't had any problems with 2'+ of snow; so just my preference.
Discussion about the traction performance of Yaktrax on Bean boots
their traction on ice or compacted snow is.... not good.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about using Yaktrax on roofs
Just wondering if it’s safe to wear yaktrax or other ice cleats for boots on my composite shingle roof?
I will just try it without anything besides my boots.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion about the necessity of ice cleats in certain conditions
In the ice my hiking shoes are like figure skates and my figure skates sink through the ice.
You don't need ice cleats here, [our snow is the perfect texture for jogging.]
Discussion about the necessity of different traction aids
Spike cross have been the go to here in the Rockies.
Comparative mention of spiked shoes vs. traction devices
They’re sufficient to keep you from really hurting yourself, but caution is needed on hard ice, especially when descending.
I like black diamond micro spikes
Discussion about the effectiveness of Yaktrax compared to other traction devices
I've heard the Kahtoola Nanospikes are good for ice but not packed snow.
Meanwhile, I felt extremely comfortable going both uphill and downhill and even did a bit of jogging.
Discussion on alternatives to Yaktrax for ice and snow
My local trails aren’t very technical, but they are twisty, and I’m very good as slipping.
Cost considerations for traction devices
They aren't going to last forever but they're also $30.
Discussion about preferences for winter footwear
But really ice is gonna be slippery no matter what, salt or sand your driveway/walkway and if you can avoid the ice by walking in snow/grass/mud it is always the less slippery choice.
Discussion on alternative traction devices
Check out the Due North all purpose spikes - I use these with my vapor gloves and they stay on and don't feel weird.
Discussion on alternatives to YakTrax for winter running
Ice and snow are common place so going out for a run over the next few months will almost certainly require YakTrax or something similar
I like Kold Kutter better than YakTrax
Modifying your own shoes would be more cost effective.
Comparison with other traction devices
I have never owned Yaktrax, but I live the Nanospikes as well!
It's also just a bit of a pain to put them on every time.
Never used Yaktrax but have found many lost single Yaktrax on my winter trail runs and hikes.
Discussion about the necessity of traction devices for winter running
Yaktrax Run Traction Cleats Has anybody used yaktrax?
Discussion about alternatives to Yaktrax
I like them better than Yaktrax.
Easy on/off, but super secure on your footwear.
Discussion about alternatives to Yaktrax for running
I feel like I can never get any traction on snow/ice.
they're amazing
Preference for trail running shoes over Yaktrax on certain terrains
If it's mostly snow and slush on mixed terrain without much ice, I'd recommend getting a trail running shoe over something with yak trax
Discussion on comparing Yaktrax Pro and Run versions
Yak Trax : Pro vs Run I almost picked up a pair of Yak Trax yesterday at our local outdoor store but they only had the Pro in stock and I went in there hoping they had the Run version.
