What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Easy to thread and use for beginners
I’ve been able to thread and effectively use the brother XM2701 machine.
Helpful tips for sewing thin fabrics
these steps should help.
The problem is 30% your skill level and 70% machine dysfunction.
try tissue paper under it.
Great for beginners and returning sewists
this brother XM2701 works wonders! perfect for beginners and perfect for those trying to get back again!
Works great! I've made quilts, clothes, etc.
Lightweight yet sturdy build
It is light but sturdy.....stay away from Singer!
Good quality and long-lasting machines
she said that the Brothers did everything she needed them to do and in the end it was cheaper to but Brothers and replace them when needed rather than getting higher end machines.
Common tension setting of 4 works well
Can you take pics on that setting as well?
Yes. For almost all purposes 4 (the default setting) is correct.
I’ve never had the upper tension on 4 because that would be way too high for my personal machine.
Adjusting bobbin tension improves stitching
You were right! I spent a while adjusting the bobbin tension and the stitches are coming out straight and beautiful now. Thank you!
Helpful guidance for beginners
I’ve used one that looks very similar to that on my machine, no need for a different foot.
What a relief haha
Clear stitch settings indicated
My Brother machine has a separate foot for that.
The "SS" setting is on your stitch length dial. Turn it all the way.

Price may be steep for the quality
The "Baby Lock" is in reality a Brother Machine from the 1980s. It's just rebadged.
The Brother cost $89 brand new and is not a quality choice.
Tension issues are common with this machine
Is your presser foot UP when you are threading the machine. If not you are threading the machine under tension which could explain what you are describing.
Definitely tension problem but set top tension on 4, go to bobbin case and make absolutely sure there are no lint/thread bits or anything else in it that would keep the bobbin from turning freely.

Discussion on the relationship between Brother and Babylock brands.
they say yes, but the internet seems to question that.
While the machines are physically the same - the software is not.
I think that the Babylock is worth the extra money. They are much MUCH higher quality.
it seems Brother is excellent for the casual hobby sewist but Babylock is a bit more durable/long lasting in their higher end models.

That sounds right for the one the dealer showed me.
Personal experience with multiple sewing machines
I believe their higher end machines have a much better reputation.
