Everyone doesn't do that but I do, seems to work for me.
Have you tried tracing paper and tracing wheel? I'd suggest holding down the pattern pieces with pattern weights.
I find it way easier than chalk and it goes away with heat.
You can use the old school method of tailor's tacks.
