What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Good investment for bulk food storage
Solid investment. I buy discount meat after the holidays and in bulk when on sale.
Most of my stuff is fruit and vegetables I freeze in season to have all winter long.
Since I eat a lot of protein and have connections to hunters who will often gift me meat, the freezer has been well worth it.
What do you think?
Helps save money on groceries
I’m so excited to stock it.
If you just throw the meat in the freezer without vacuum sealing it'll be freezer burnt pretty easily and not last as long.
a small chest freezer is a good way to take advantage of silly discounts and 'oops we gotta sell it' deals.
Chest freezers utilize space efficiently
Chest in theory are more efficient and you can really pack stuff in there and utilize almost 100% of its space.
- chest freezers are way better and with purchase of bins, make placing and finding frozen stuff so much easier
Longer power outage retention
Chest freezer also lasts far longer when the power goes out than uprights.
Great for bulk food purchases
buying a freezer chest was the best frugal move I've made in a long time
We stock our freezer with frozen bread, pizzas, juice, donuts, french fries, etc. to reduce going out to eat when no one wants to cook.
appreciate everyone’s comments and suggestions! I am definitely going to get one.
I have one and I'm so glad I have it. I like to bulk buy when things are well priced and it's very useful to have a lot of freezer storage space.
Allows for better inventory management with stacking
Best thing I did was get milk crates. They stack well, hold up in the temps, and are easy to lift out.
Useful for bulk purchasing and meal prep
The pros are endless
it is invaluable
Works great for bulk food storage
We have this one and it’s worked great for us!
Quiet operation
Almost no noise to keep me awake if that is a concern.
Good organization ideas for freezer management
even allowing for covid shopping.
Freezer bags have an area for writing the name of the item and date on it in permanent marker.
I painted the top of mine with chalkboard paint, so I could keep a running inventory right there.
Efficiency of chest freezers
How many of you have chest freezers? any recs on brand/size?
I wanted a chest freezer due to the higher efficiency, but the wife wanted a stand up so things would be neat and organized with the shelves.
Useful for storing bulk food
I wouldn't go with any thing smaller than 5 cu ft because you'll probably fill it fast once you realize you have all that capacity.
Energy efficient new models
They are much more energy efficient, with some good mid-sized ones needing as little as 25-30W.
Affordable pricing for new units
They are pretty cheap new. Black Friday a few years back I got a new one for the same price as used ones.
Useful for meal preparation and portioning
I buy meat on sale and I vacuum seal it. I'm eating 2 year old chicken breasts that are not freezer burned at all.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Cleaning may be difficult and time-consuming
This chest freezer is a biohazard. It’s not even worth the time, money and chemicals to clean it up.
Plus, depending on what’s rotting in there, you’ll never get the smell out and potentially there could be mould or other things that could be an issue for your health.
Awesome advice. This makes me feel valid.
Not worth the effort for savings
A week of hard labor to save yourself $20? a waste.
There's a difference between frugal and cheap. In my opinion, I think this would fall under the latter.
Difficult organization and access
Easier to organize and find what I need.
Its just much easier to organise and access stuff
I can't imagine using one after I saw my sister digging around in hers for what she was looking for.
getting to anything was always a pain in the behind. Enter upright freezer and I'm a happy camper.
Difficult organization can lead to spoilage
Spoilage is throwing away money, so preventing it is more important than taking advantage of a good deal.
Older models draw more energy
Could not power the old freezer with the same system.
Upfront costs can seem excessive
Not trying to be rude here, but is the amount you save by vacuum sealing meat/other food more than it costs to get the freezer, vacuum sealer plus bags, and electricity?

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Personal anecdotes about freezer longevity
My mother has a Westinghouse (Frigidaire) chest freezer she purchased in 1993 that is still going strong today.
I highly doubt the new one will be working in 20 years let alone almost 70.
Discussion on outdoor usability and insulation needs
Chest freezer for outdoors? I want to get one to put under my stilt house.
Most freezers aren't designed to work in more than 80-90F.
Garage ready address extremely cold temperatures. If the ambient temp drops below what the freezer is set at the compressor will shut off and things will begin to thaw.
They have Yellow Energy Star stickers and since pretty much all compressors are roughly equal, it's likely the one that 'uses the least energy' at a given size has the best insulation.
Personal anecdotes about freezer utility
My partner hemmed and hawed about getting one (I said we're probably okay either way) and by the time he decided to get one they were all gone at Costco.
Yes, this event has opened my eyes to how much better off we *could* be.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Chest freezers are versatile for different foods
I’ve been freezing wide mouth mason jars for years and have never had an issue!

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Perspective on frugality vs. practicality
A headache-free afternoon of leisure.
stress, while hard to quantify, should also be incorporated into the decision-making process
Sometimes, spending a few bucks to finish the damn thing is worth it.
Value of vacuum sealing to prevent freezer burn
my dad had one and nothing we put in them got freezer burnt.
Without the vacuum sealing it would have gotten freezer burned.
Tips on acquiring free or cheap freezers
Get one off of a buy-nothing FB group, or CL for free! Just may have to watch for a month or two.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Vacuum sealing prevents freezer burn
Freezer burn won't happen in a vacuum sealed bag vs a ziploc.
As others have said, vac sealing (when properly done) prevents freezer burn.
Environmental considerations in cleaning
You act like masks and bleach don't exist. It's so amazing to me that a simple, if intense, cleaning job is deemed a cheap action.
Plastic bags are inexpensive and terrible for the environment.
Concerns about repairability of newer freezers
I guarantee the results aren't what people expect.
Issues with parts availability for newer models
they have both been running fine since but they shouldn't have needed repair in less than 2 years of use.
Market trends for used freezers
The amount of almost brand new deep freezes I see on market place is crazy.
