What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Great investment for bulk food savings
Solid investment. I buy discount meat after the holidays and in bulk when on sale.
Although the primary reason was convenience, it also saves us.
The pros are endless—buy items on sale, freeze them for later, and have more room for ice cream.
It was essential when we had three kids at home and now invaluable as empty nesters.
Convenient for meal prepping
And a vacuum sealer. An unbeatable combination for meal prep and saving money.
+2 for vacuum sealer. It’s been a game changer for us and we’ve reduced so much food waste!.
Helps reduce food waste
As others have said, vac sealing (when properly done) prevents freezer burn.
Ample storage capacity
Most of my stuff is fruit and vegetables I freeze in season to have all winter long.
Since I eat a lot of protein and have connections to hunters who will often gift me meat, the freezer has been well worth it.
Just bought a ’95 Chevy G30 15-psgr van (used as a nursing home transport van), with a hightop and only 60,000 original miles.
Chest freezers utilize space efficiently
Less organized though and a lot of digging for what you want.
- chest freezers are way better and with purchase of bins, make placing and finding frozen stuff so much easier.
Longer lasting during power outages
Chest freezer also lasts far longer when the power goes out than uprights.
Works well in garage conditions
Garages stay warmer than outside temps regardless.
I’m not exaggerating when I say almost everyone has a fridge and/or chest freezer in their garages.
Provides sufficient cooling for frozen goods
You garage won't get as cold as the outside.
Ample storage capacity for bulk food
I'm 3 months pp and we ended up buying a 7 cubic foot deep freezer and soooo glad we did!
Convenient for storing breast milk
I ordered a 21 cu foot GE upright chest freezer and have 0 regrets.
Garage ready and withstands temperature extremes
We did and are so glad it isn't taking up space in the house.
Durable condition upon arrival
Both arrived in perfect condition and are still going strong.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Cleaning may be a big task
This chest freezer is a biohazard. It’s not even worth the time, money and chemicals to clean it up.
Plus, depending on what’s rotting in there, you’ll never get the smell out and potentially there could be mould or other things that could be an issue for your health.
Might not be worth the effort for frugality
A week of hard labor to save yourself $20? a waste.
Awesome advice. This makes me feel valid
Less organized storage requiring digging
Owning a chest, I’d rather have an upright. Easier to organize and find what I need.
same. I got an upright because I remember what a hassle it was getting things out of the chest freez
May break down in extreme temperatures
mine just straight up broke after one cold day, would still get cool, but it was above fridge temp.
Potential food spoilage risk if power is lost
Make sure you get an alarm or something that will alert you if the outlet it's plugged into loses power.
Lack of insulation guarantees from the manufacturer
It’s probably primarily that they won’t guarantee the insulation and temperature cycling will work ideally when the external conditions aren’t well-controlled.
Potential breakdown of compressor leading to thawed food
Not the end of the world if it's not fixable.
It was basically just the compressor, start relay, and the temp control/ thermostat.
High incidence of physical damage upon arrival
many of them arriving with a lot of dents and other physical damage.
more than half of all reviews are citing physical damage.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Users recommend vacuum sealers for better food preservation
I keep hearing this but how is it better than just putting things in ziploc bags?
While not as good as vacuum sealing, still a very effective alternative.
Different methods for freezing food discussed
No mess.
Having squirrels for brains makes me easily distracted and forgetful, so I use fail safes like this.
Discussion on freezing methods for sushi-grade fish
I make / eat it for about 1/3 of my meals for the week.
It's generally impossible to tell if fish is "sushi grade" or safe to eat raw from a picture alone.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Personal experiences shared with food storage
I’ve been freezing wide mouth mason jars for years and have never had an issue!
If you know what you're doing, this isn't that much harder.
I care about that, but environmentalism has nothing to do with frugality.
Comparison of upright vs. chest freezers
Apparently Vissani is a house brand made by Magic Chef. It seemed like a good price and it can be switched to refrigerator mode.
Discussion about garage suitability for freezers
I realize that this may shorten the life of my chest freezer over time and I am completely okay with that as it is a small freezer and was relatively cheap.
Consideration of oversupply before purchasing
It would suck to invest in a deep freezer if that's the only reason you want one and then you end up not needing it.
Inquiry about performance of other freezer brands
If it really gets down to -40 I’ll probably get it to try.
A newer fridge is all you need.
Discussion about the necessity of a freezer in off-grid settings
what sort of system would you then think you needed?

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on the value of frugality vs convenience
There's a difference between frugal and cheap. In my opinion, I think this would fall under the latter.
Absolutely not worth the time, effort, or opportunity cost.
You act like masks and bleach don't exist. It's so amazing to me that a simple, if intense, cleaning job is deemed a cheap action. Some people aren't frugal because they want to be, but because they are low income and must be.
Discussion on brand reliability and durability of freezers
Most reliable brand for chest freezers? My 2 year old Danby Premiere has decided it wants to no longer freeze my food.
That sucks! I have had a number of them that never died (IE I sold them in working condition after many years of use) many people do say, regardless of the brand, that newer models are less durable than older ones were at showroom.
Mine died at 3 1/2, and the service call is almost as much as a new unit.
Discussion on brand reliability and longevity
My mother has a Westinghouse (Frigidaire) chest freezer she purchased in 1993 that is still going strong today.
I highly doubt the new one will be working in 20 years let alone almost 70.
