Snoop's Take

The Gerber Gear Ultimate Survival Knife is a fixed blade knife designed for outdoor enthusiasts, featuring a combination edge blade and multiple survival tools like a fire starter and whistle. Users appreciate its compact size and rugged design, with many noting its durability in survival tests; one user mentioned, "I’ve processed hundreds of pieces of wood (batoning, light chopping, etc…) and it’s still fine to cut." While the knife is praised for its versatility in various outdoor activities, some users have raised concerns about declining quality and warranty processes, stating that modern Gerber products are not as reliable as they once were. Overall, the Gerber Gear Ultimate Survival Knife is recommended for those seeking a compact and functional tool for camping, hunting, and bushcraft. However, potential buyers should be aware of mixed reviews regarding quality and longevity, especially in comparison to competitors. With a limited lifetime warranty backing it, this knife remains a solid choice for outdoor adventures, provided users manage their expectations about durability and material quality.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Compact size makes it a good tactical option
Is the Gerber strongarm a good knife?
If you're looking for a tactical, compact survival knife, I think it's one of the best options out there.
Durability shown in survival tests
Definitely needed resharpening, but didn't break.
Good for work and rugged use
Gerber is a great knife for work. Don’t have to stress about breaking it so you won’t be scared to use it.
Good design aesthetics
They make good looking designs because they hire good designers.
Strong and reliable for outdoor use
I’ve processed hundreds of pieces of wood (batoning, light chopping, etc…) and it’s still fine to cut.
Good general-purpose knife
Great general purpose sure.
High durability and indestructibility
unexpected but I think this Gerber strong arm is my new favorite knife, fixed blade anyway.
Gerber works wonders with it in terms if durability.
Good for various outdoor activities
It's not the best at everything, but good enough to work.
Some Gerber models are top notch
Perhaps, I’ve got a few of their Portland models that Are top notch
Good for practical outdoor use
Very happy with this knife!
It is pretty darn practical. Beefy and low cost.
I have the bear grills edition think they are the same. I fuckin love it.
Durability over time
the blade still has no wobble and holds an edge very well.
it’s still holding up 15 years later.
Holds an edge for a long time
Holds an edge for quite a long time and is really solid.
Compact and slim design for utility use
this one was definitely the best.
It's a darned good one! Far, far better than any wonder-steel bladed folder for your job.
Reliable and neat holder for utility knife blade
Not sure why this is getting downvoted so bad. Not all of Gerber stuff is garbage (albeit most). The Gerber shard and dime are excellent tools.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Quality has declined over the years
I stopped trusting Gerber quality a long time ago! I'll still eat the food though.
Yeah, modern Gerber is trash. The company as it exists today is a shade of what it used to be, and they’re pretty much riding on the name.
I’ve heard that Gerber has gone downhill lately, any truth to that?
Warranty process is frustrating
I purchased this Gerber Gear "knife" about 45 days ago. While clearing some small brush on an old abandoned train line, the handle snapped off.
Quality has declined post-acquisition
Once they got past the stench of being associated with crap like the Bear Grylls line.
Handle can break under stress
Sucks that one drop ruined it.
the knife was designed for a very specific purpose.
Sheath design is poorly constructed
the sheath design was awful, it was retain by 2 metal (probably stainless steel) bars that would click into the little indents just about the handle, so unless you pulled it out and sheathed it perfectly straight, youd dull it everytime
Steel quality requires frequent sharpening
Meh steel tho. But if you are ok with more frequent sharpening its solid knive.
Blade quality is poor
the blade quality is kinda trash.
Gerber makes decent enough stuff for non knife people.
Anything they make now is shit.
Gerber products are considered low quality
drop the Gerber.
Poor design makes it difficult to use
Gerber Gear Affinity I saw the copper affinity at Ace hardware and it looks like a slick knife.
This truly might be the worst-designed knife I've ever used.
Quality has declined after acquisition
They're not bad...mostly. Compared to how they used to be before they sold out though they're really not great.
They used to be one of the best American knife companies. Then Fiskars bought them and they haven’t been the same since.
Poor quality materials and control
I had a multitool from them (now discontinued) that lasted me probably close to 10 years, and I loved that thing.
Comparison to better brands like Mora
I would take a Mora over a Gerber any day
Concern about product origin and quality
I bought this Gerber knife from an authorized Gerber site in UK but was disappointed to see "Made in China" on the box.
Quality for the price has suffered recently
Their quality for the price has suffered recently as the rest of the knife market surpassed them.
Gerber's quality has declined since Fiskars acquisition
Since the fiskars buy out not so much.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Gerber offers a sheath for small fixed blades.
Ankle knife sheath? Any suggestions for an ankle wrap sheath for carrying a folding knife or balisong.
Gerber made one for a small fixed blade. I know you asked for a folding blade, but this one came to mind.
Discussion on steel preferences in knives
It's subjective. I really like my fixed blades in 1095 but many don't.
1095 is perfectly fine steel if you know how to treat it. I have tons of really good knives in 1095.
Discussion on specific knife purposes and designs
*Aww*, look at Gerber getting all confident and listing their blade material.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Gerber has diverse products beyond knives
I didn’t know they made crayons!?

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion on alternative knife brands
TOPS and Eder are knife companies. As for a Mora suggestion I like the kansbol or garberg (models).
Morakniv Robust" is less than $20, and robust indeed. Great entry level fixed blade.
I say this owning several Becker analogs to the ESEE and tops knives - 1095 steel. I dont buy fancy knives or more expensive any more - just mora companion and companion HDs.
What is y'all's opinion on this knife's and which one should i get https://www.emag.ro/cutit-de-vanatoare-camping-digital-bowie-31-cm-husa-cadou-f80/pd/DZCD7PMBM/?utm_campaign=share_product&utm_source=mobile_dynamic_share&utm_medium=android
Comparison with other knife warranties
Esee has a lifetime no question asked warranty you break it they replace it
Discussion on alternatives to the Gerber knife
This Gerber is discontinued, but say I have dozens of people looking for a similar knife in price and looks/construction.
Esee Izula costs a bit more but worth it.
The Cold Steel Mini Tac Bowie is pretty similar, slightly longer blade I think?
Preference for fixed blades in certain work environments
Basically my uncle works with a bunch of people and at that job they all seem to have grown to prefer fixed blades.
Comparison of different knife brands and models
May not be the prettiest, but it was designed to do just about everything.
Second the Fallkniven. I have two A1s, and they are definitely my go to knives in a life and death situation.
I recently bought the Fallkniven F1 (in VG10W) which is so so so much better.
Much bigger knife but this Busse is the best fixed blade I have handled.
Discussion on alternatives to Gerber knives
Gerber makes a million products. Some are/were good. I can’t make a blanket statement for everything with their name on it.
Variety of opinions on Gerber's current offerings
I fully believe you get what you pay for. I’m just saying that Gerber (Fiksars) still has a few really good blades.
Discussion on US-made vs China-made Gerber knives
Gerber makes knives both in the US and China, and to be honest: the qualitty of their US-made stuff is often the same as their China-made stuff.
Enjoy your Gerber if you keep it as well.
Encouragement to practice bushcraft skills with any knife
Before you buy another knife..,,
Comparison with Gerber Prodigy as a better option
If you're thinking of a Gerber, then just get the Prodigy instead.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Preference for Morakniv over Gerber knives
I don't care too much for mass produced, cheap knives at all, But the Gerbers I've had in the past have been fallapartish.
Gerber was once a quality brand but is perceived differently now
Why do people hate Gerber? I'm fairly new to the knife community, and was really liking the look of some of their knives, but was blown away at how many people hate them.
