What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Durable and reusable material
Food saver bags run 25-45¢ each. Adds up.
They work incredibly well for preserving cut avocados
Anyone out there love their chamber vacuum sealer and feel like it was totally worth it ? :)
Without a doubt, it is the best purchase I’ve made and not just for sous vide either.
Effective air removal
What are the other benefits you'd praise to convert someone from a traditional vac sealer to a chamber sealer?
Thank you! I will keep my eyes peeled.
Yes, I love my chamber vac.
I use a foodsaver attachment to seal Mason jars reusably.
Space-saving design
We cut down on food waste a ton.
Yes. Love it. Only downside is that it lives in the basement because it’s huge and weighs 60 lbs. but they are definitely worth the price.
Really helped me save a bunch since I could buy bulk and packed for single use.
Space-saving effectiveness
It saves space in the truck versus boxes.
Cost-effective for DIY ice packs
All the ice packs we had were too large, and I couldn't find one that was quite right at the store, so I MacGyver'd her one out of orbees and a vacuum sealer bag that's just the right size.
They stay cold way way longer than the store bought versions. They are cheaper, and perform better.
Effective air removal for better freezing
Vacuum sealing makes freezing waaaay better than most other containers you have at home.
Effective for portioning meats
Seasoning and vacuum sealing has made meals so much easier for me!
I adore my vacuum sealer. Bulk buy meats, then I spend an hour or so portioning everything and labeling like yours.
Saves time with pre-seasoning
it really saves so much time instead of having to thaw it back out, season, and then seal again
Cost-effective for bulk storage of meat and fish
the vacuum bags take up much less space than the massive plastic tubs meat usually comes in, plus by separating beforehand, you can defrost just one or two pieces.
Effective for short term storage of yarn
I’ve used these bags for my clothes and bedding and have never had any problems.
I have a large variety of fibers and weights and haven't seen any issues with them being stored this way.
No problem, I vacuum seal all of my yarn both for easier storage and to prevent moths/other pests.
Effective for long-term clothing storage
not overloading them because they can get heavy!
especially bulky sweaters in the summer
Space-saving for closet organization
Using Vacuum storage bags for clothes? Is this an option? Tips, tricks, and advice would be appreciated.
Effective for storing multiple clothing sets
Worth the money? I like them.
Works with alternative air removal methods
Not the most gracious method but it works.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Confusing setup or usage
Ok but why is it packed like that?
Those meds may not last long in those packages, you are not protecting them from light degradation.
I discovered pickles in seconds (although they are 200% the next day)
Sealing issues with bags
All the ones I have ever used would not stay sealed and always expanded on me.
High cost of bags
Aren't the bags kind of pricy? And that's a lot of added single use plastic.
Environmental concerns over single-use plastic
Plastic bags, plastic wrap, shopping plastic bags most flimsy single-use plastics, at most places, cannot be recycled, and shouldn't because it cloggs the sorting machines at the recycling plant.
Potential damage to natural fibers over long term
It will reduce the loftiness of the yarn and won't work up as nicely.
I personally wouldn't risk the vacuum pack.
Less durable than expected
They're really only valuable if you're packing a lot in a large suitcase and have the kind that use an actual vacuum.
I tried them but I just packed more and the bag ended up being heavier.
Vacuum bags ineffective after some time
They're great until you put a few under your bed and the vacuum breaks...
There are better deals available
Depends on how you look at it, better deals out there
Potential for leaking if not stored properly
Word to the wise if you do this--store the bags with the valves facing out so you can easily access them.
Punctures can compromise the vacuum seal
Out of...12 bags, only one manages to hold a vacuum for more than a couple weeks.
any puncture will kill even the best bags.
Overfilling bags causes seal failures
If they’re even the tiniest bit overfilled the seal will break.
Limited effectiveness over time
My ziplocks, various sizes, have held their vacuum for well over a year.
Ineffective with robot vacuums
Yes but I realised these don't work when you only have a robot vacuum but my bad 🤣
Certain materials do poorly when vacuum sealed long-term
Down and wool do poorly if vacuum sealed for too long :/
Sealing issues with vacuum bags
What has worked best for me is putting stuff in the space bag, and then a locking sterilite bin (the locking prevents them from re-poofing the top off).
Keep them away from anything sharp or rough, it only takes one pull or knick or tear to ruin the bag.
Bags can 're-poof' over time
they're still vacuumed tight a few years later with no re-poofing.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on recycling and reusing plastic
So save them up and then when (if) the covid era ends, we can recycle them.
They have ziploc versions as well.
Vacuum sealing protects against pests
No. It won't damage your yarn. But it will protect it from moths and other harmful bugs.
As a general rule, it won't damage your yarn. Now, maybe if you're trying to suck seriously every last molecule of air out but I usually do enough to get it to seal fully, and lay pretty flat without extra air in the bag.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Alternative sealing methods discussed
You don’t need a hand pump. Put the food you want to save in a Ziploc bag put the bag in a sink full of water almost up to where you seal it, the air will be pushed out and then seal it vola.
Unique uses for vacuum sealing
Cold brew coffee is also a neat thing to do in there.
Sealing alternative methods discussed
Sealing Mason jars vs vacuum bags Happy Halloween everyone.
I'll be honest, I just use the bag that the roaster gives me, 99% of the time there's a one-way valve so seal up & squeeze out the air.
DIY ice pack alternatives using vacuum seal bags
All the ice packs we had were too large, and I couldn't find one that was quite right at the store, so I MacGyver'd her one out of orbees and a vacuum sealer bag that's just the right size.
Bag if peas would work for those of us that don't have a vacuum sealer or orbeez.
The general consensus for at home gel ice pack is 2 parts water to 1 part rubbing alcohol.
They're pliable like gel when at freezing or room temps and hold their temp for a good while.
Discussion about homemade vacuum bag sizes being cheaper
Way cheaper even than these.
Discussion on sous vide cooking techniques
I've never thought of sous vide ground beef.... What's going on here lmao OP, will you please shatter my world?
Tips for using vacuum storage bags effectively
I also suggest to add silica gel packets into the bags since especially since you're in FL it helps prevent damage to the clothing.
Alternative clothing packing methods discussed
the MOST IMPORTANT PART of this is to not use the newly freed up space for extra crap, unless it's something like snacks that will get consumed during the trip.
No vacuum required.
I might need to start securing them with elastics and then giving them a good squeeze to get the remaining air out, but I've found it hard to "compress" rolled clothing by just squishing, and usually end up needing to reroll them tighter.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Comparative cost savings with bulk purchases
They are a crazy ripoff. Generic nylon vacuum bags are a few cents a piece when you buy in bulk.
Chamber sealer? Easy peasy.
Seeking cheaper alternatives for vacuum sealer bags
I'm still hoping to find cheaper bags. But honestly I haven't found a good one yet.
Usefulness varies by moving method
Overall, it didn’t make it that much more efficient space-wise and was only useful for me to prevent the boxes from getting poofy and stretching the box.
Comments on competitive market dynamics
You're talking about billion dollar companies competing, not a mom and pop going up against Amazon.
This is good competition for food saver.
Ah yes, the same way they put Charmin, Bounty, Perdue, and Truly out of business.
Discussion on vacuum sealing vs. plastic bagging for freezing
since theoretically frozen food lasts indefinitely
no difference in quality whatsoever and no freezer burn if tightly wrapped.
Curiosity about vacuum sealer purchase
Where did you purchase your sealer from?
Comparative experiences with different brands
I've had success with the Ziploc roll-up compression bags, no vacuum required.
Comparison with other brands
Eagle Creek compression bags. The zippers are way better than others and you need those to smoosh your clothes down.
I use ziplock bags (gallon, quart, and sandwich size) to pack my things before putting them in my luggage. It makes it easier to pack, unpack, and keep things organized.
Seeking help with decluttering and organization
Anyone faced this and come up on the other side?
Discussion about organizing items effectively
Putting the squish in Squishmallows...my bf and I just have so many that they’re taking over our living room.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Puncturing issues with vacuum bags discussed
Three of the 12 bags have punctured.
this was the best brand as it just worked.
I’ve never had a food saver bag puncture.
This stopped lamb chop bones from puncturing my bags, and it also keeps food away from plastic.
Humorous commentary on packaging
So now you look like a drug dealer, lol
Ahh yes, the corner Aleve dealer... I initially thought it was a different blue pill.
Pssst... got any more of them blood thinners?!
I can tell you’ve never bought drugs from a dealer. It never looks this well packaged.
Concerns about safety and quality of cheaper vacuum bags
I have sometimes considered the cheaper ones you can find on Amazon, but I'm leery about the safety/quality control of the ones made in China and I have seen really hit and miss reviews about how well they seal.
Mixed experiences with yarn storage methods
Yes, it can damage it. If you're going for short term then you'll probably be fine.
I’m not sure how long they will be vacuum sealed.
Experiences with various brands and their effectiveness
best vacuum storage bag? [BIFL Request] Hi all, I need some help finding the best quality brand out there.
The space bags are very slippery and don't stay put very easily.
