Snoop's Take

The Medela Freestyle Hands-Free Breast Pump is a portable and discreet double electric breast pump designed for mothers seeking convenience and efficiency while pumping. With its wearable collection cups and app connectivity, this breast pump allows for an effective pumping experience without the constraints of traditional models. Consumer feedback highlights the pump's effectiveness, with many users stating, "I was SHOCKED how much I got with the medela and so quickly!" Furthermore, the hands-free design is praised for its comfort and discreetness, making it suitable for use on the go. However, some customers have noted issues with suction power and the importance of proper flange fitting to achieve optimal results. Overall, the Medela Freestyle Hands-Free Breast Pump is well-regarded within its category, particularly for mothers looking for a portable and easy-to-use solution for their pumping needs, despite some noted drawbacks in suction consistency.

I was SHOCKED how much I got with the medela and so quickly! Just experiment with some techniques to see what works but I love mine so much I got another to keep in my pump bag/diaper bag!

Positive Feedback

I had the medela PIS and it’s more like a POS (piece of shit!) Literally the worst pump.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Effective and efficient pumping
I was SHOCKED how much I got with the medela and so quickly! Just experiment with some techniques to see what works but I love mine so much I got another to keep in my pump bag/diaper bag!
lol I have 4 medela harmony pumps 🤣so one is always clean! They’re so simple and convenient.
I find that the manual pump drains me in half of the time the electric ones do, I seem to collect more milk throughout the day, it’s easier to clean with no charging and I am finding that my supply is increasing.
Convenient and easy to use
100% it's easier to travel with, not as many parts to clean, quiet to use at night, not attached to a wall or wires, affordable, easy to replace, better control of suction, able to focus and hone in on the process... Just mentally less taxing than an electric one.
I love my freestyle flex! I use it as my primary pump with the Imani i2 as my secondary.
Effective hands-free pumping experience
The pump is pretty strong as well without it feeling like it’s going to rip your nipples off.
I'm getting this pump for free through my insurance and wanted to see if it would be a good one since it's the only hands free one that's available.
I love my freestyle flex! I use it as my primary pump with the Imani i2 as my secondary.
Comfortable and discreet design
The cups fit perfectly! It’s the suction and that’s the most important part.
Good effectiveness in emptying
I’ve used a ton over the past 10 months ( I exclusively pump)
If you are planning on pumping regularly, your hand will start to hurt with a manual.
Convenient for regular pumping
The wireless ones just didn’t empty me completely. But they do work better than the willows, in my opinion.
Portable and easy to use
Both for different instances. If you're doing any amount of regular pumping an electric is a must, but manuals are relatively cheap (around $40) and useful for travel, quick pumps, power outages etc.
Effective and efficient pumping experience
Super fast and efficient. I heard that electric pumps are slow so never got one, and couldn’t be bothered with wearable ones.
Good output with Medela pump
My pumping output is good with the Elvie, SIGNIFICANTLY better than my other two pumps.
The wearable aspect of the momcozy is just so much easier to deal with.
Easy to use on the go
it’s relatively easy to use on the go and I have regularly pumped in the car between appointments.
Easy to use settings
I don't really understand how the settings work but I usually do L6.
Matches output of other Medela pumps
I have it and would review it positively. It matches the output from my Pump in Style.
Chargeable and portable
I like my pump but the tubes are annoying and the battery pack is crapola.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Insufficient suction power
I had the medela PIS and it’s more like a POS (piece of shit!) Literally the worst pump.
Difficulty in monitoring letdown
I have trouble I can’t tell when I’m done pumping because I can’t see my letdown through the cups.
Difficulty achieving consistent results
It’s weird for me regardless of time or breast fullness it works amazing 50% of the time.
Pumps like many other things work wonders for some and others not so much.
I don’t know if it’s my supply or the pump.
Need for correct fitting flanges
It only worked for me once I got the correct fitting flange. I was trying with a 24mm when I actually needed a 14mm!
Insufficient suction power for effective pumping
Make sure you hear a good “click” when you’re connecting everything together at the end.
Need for correct fitting flanges to improve use
getting inserts changed everything for me! I currently have 19mm inserts that I use in the 21mm flanges and will be sizing down to 18/17mm inserts inside the 24mm flanges, the more I try to fit them specifically to my body anatomy the better output I end up getting!
Inconsistent output with Medela after using other pumps
Once I started using a Zomee pump, I only get a few drops with my Medela.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Comparison with other Medela pumps
Have you also used the Medela Symphony (stationary electric pump) and noticed any difference?
Discussion on various flange sizes and their impact
Did you ever try changing out the duckbill it came with? I too have elastic nipples and after figuring out that tip for the Medela harmony I ditched my spectra S1 and haven't looked back! The duckbill is comes with is useless.
I tried loads of different parts and accessories during both my pumping experience. I don't just have elastic nipples but also lots of loose skin due to weight loss.
Discussion on spare parts availability
Just been doing some thinking, does anyone know if you can buy the parts separately?

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Curiosity about cup availability and pricing
I wonder if the cups will be $100, the difference between the Personal Fit and Hands Free.
Brand comparison and preferences
if I don’t succeed I will definitely try it!
Curiosity about parts compatibility
Yes, you can use the new Hands Free Freestyle parts with the Freestyle Flex pump.
Comparison with other pump brands
If you’re paying out of pocket, I’d recommend the Pumpables Genie Advanced. It’s much cheaper than the Medela and works great.
Discussion about pump recommendations
I’m tired of being stuck on the sofa pumping and I’m hoping a better pump can help collect more milk so I don’t have to supplement with formula as much.
Discussion on preferences between Medela and Spectra pumps
I’ve used both and personally prefer the spectra. You have much more control over the settings and the night light is super handy.
The Medela doesn't have the light, clock, or screen features of the Spectra. I also like the big handle and bottle holder of the Spectra.
Concerns about overwhelming choices for first-time mothers
I have no idea which one to pick and would love any opinions and advice/guidance on this as I am getting close to the point where I need to order one!
I didn't think picking a pump would be so overwhelming!

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Preference for manual pumps during early days
Using a pump in the first few days is not usually recommended unless there is problem like separation or the baby can’t latch.
Preference for electric vs manual pumping
Electric or manual breast pump? What did you find most helpful? A electric breast pump or manual pump?
Discussion on pump recommendations and personal experiences
Being only one person, there’s only so many pumps I can trial personally, and there are so many on the market, with new ones launching all the time.
I feel like this is hard to answer. Because they're so expensive, most people have ever only tried 1 or 2.
Love the pump and successfully used it as my primary for the last 10 weeks.
Medela Freestyle Hands Free was all around garbage.
Discussion about personal experiences with different pumps
Maybe your body decided something similar? Maybe it really loves the Elvie and its suction pattern and the other pumps aren’t cutting it anymore?
Discussion about experiences with different pump brands
its SUPER comfortable, half the time i forget im pumping lol.
this was an absolute game changer time wise.
Discussion on personal experiences with different pumps
I read that the Medela Sonata is "inspired" by the Symphony but online reviews are mixed.
Positives of this pump is that it is uber cheap to maintain.
Personal experiences vary significantly
Just wanting to know if anyone has experience with this specific pump.
Pumps are such a personal thing.
