Snoop's Take

The Spectra S1 Plus Electric Breast Milk Pump is designed to provide convenient breastfeeding support for mothers. This portable and rechargeable pump mimics natural breastfeeding and offers comfortable suction levels to effectively empty breasts, making it a valuable tool for both on-the-go parents and those who pump exclusively. Consumer sentiment around the Spectra S1 is largely positive, with many users praising its effectiveness for milk extraction. As one user noted, "I love my S9. It works just as well as my S1," highlighting the pump's reputation for delivering greater milk output in less time compared to other devices. Additionally, users appreciate the pump's portability, with comments like, "I got the S1 instead of S2 solely because it has a built-in rechargeable battery." Based on the feedback, the Spectra S1 is highly recommended for its category due to its efficiency, user-friendliness, and strong reputation among breastfeeding mothers. Despite some concerns regarding setup and component durability, the overall consensus is that it stands out as a reliable choice for breast pumping needs.

Positive Feedback

the thought of being covered in tubes and having to sit down and hold the pumps for up to 30 minutes at a time, potentially multiple times a day. It doesn’t seem very convenient.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Effective at emptying breasts
Effective at emptying breasts (backed by 5 comments)
Portable and convenient for on-the-go moms
It's not manual. It's a portable electric pump that just sits in the bra.
Greater milk output in less time
My friend got greater output in less time from the spectra vs her wearable, but other commenters have suggested otherwise.
Portable and convenient for travel
It doesn’t seem very convenient.
You just need a *plug adapter* for the pin configuration of the outlets at your destination.
Effective suction compared to other pumps
I find it about 90% as effective as my S1 and the last 10% is more from the pressure I apply on the flange.
Good reputation and trustworthiness among users
Spectra are the best in the biz as far as I’m aware and I had a LOT of time to research when I bought my first pump (thanks lockdowns), even most of the Americans go for Spectra above other brands if you check out the pumping and breastfeeding subs :)
Works effectively for milk extraction
I love my S9. It works just as well as my S1
Effective for exclusive pumping
my right side started to produce less, and I had an overall drop in ounces—about 2/day.
I’d also recommend buying the freemie cups to go along with it, if you’re planning on pumping a lot.
Good suction and effective for milk extraction
I have several pumps but my spectra gold is the one I use every day. I love it and can’t say enough good things about it!
Portable and convenient for on-the-go use
she’s ready not recommending the portable version because of the fixed settings.
Built-in rechargeable battery for portability
Spectra Breast Pump FTM here! According to a few posts I’ve read, Spectra seems to be favoured over
I got the s1 instead of s2 solely because it has a built in rechargeable battery so I didn't have to be tetherd to an outlet all the time.
The S1 is better since you can charge it up, and take it with you. For example charge it when your not using it, and then pump milk on the comfort of your couch instead of stuck in a chair by an electrical outlet. Its worth the extra money.
Rechargeable for convenience
I like the thought that is it rechargeable so that it saves on buying AA batteries.
Once fully charged it lasts me 3-4 days.
Great alternative to S2
I like the S1 a lot. I have an S2 as well but I never reach for that instead.
Powerful and effective for milk extraction
my spectra is still more powerful.
I feel like my spectra was just as good at emptying as the hospital one.
It’s been my main pump for 7 months now.
Widely recommended in parenting groups
Talk to me about the spectra breast pump FTM.
Effective suction for milk extraction
Whether you pay oop for it and let insurance cover the Elvie is up to you.
Wouldn’t empty her out.
Great reputation and user trust
I regret getting my stride and wish I got a free spectra through insurance
Easy access to replacement parts
Replacement parts are super easy to get from Amazon! Maymom sells everything you'd need.
Maymom on amazon has replacement parts, you can get them 1 day shipping with Amazon prime.
Better output and comfort compared to other pumps
I highly prefer the spectra, slightly better output and I actually prefer the flanges over the Medela personal fit flex flanges.
I struggled with supply and found the Spectra was able to get more and was significantly more comfortable.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Inconvenient setup with tubes
the thought of being covered in tubes and having to sit down and hold the pumps for up to 30 minutes at a time, potentially multiple times a day. It doesn’t seem very convenient.
Issues with pump parts durability
I like the Spectra pump itself, but HATED the spectra pump parts.
Potential struggles for those with flat nipples
I have flat, small nipples so I am worried about pumping and if it will be a struggle for me.

I bought an external battery for the pink one that made it portable!
I ended up doing this too! It was hard to squeeze it all into my pump bag though.

We found a hack on YouTube to make it portable by getting a battery pack and just velcroing it to the bottom of the spectra s2

Discussion on other brands like Madela
Why not get the Madela.
Research phase for choosing a breast pump
I keep seeing amazing reviews for the Spectra S1 on this sub and across different websites.
Discussion about personal experiences with various breast pumps
My favourite would be the cheap no-named wearables i bought on Catch.
It was so efficient that I ended up exclusively pumping, as baby developed a bottle preference from age 3 months!
Discussion on alternatives like Spectra wearable pumps
Thanks for sharing, I’m on the fence with whether I should get the Spectra wearables or one of the other brands and it was great to hear an honest review 😊
Would have loved these, thanks for the review.
User considering new pump options due to lifestyle changes
I had great success with the S1 last time and still have it/will be using it again.
Discussion on where to order through insurance
Breast pumps - Spectra S1 vs. S2? Opinions? Tips? What's a good site to order through insurance?
I did a lot of research and ended up going with the S1 due to the option of portability.
Confusion about model differences
I would so love any insight or advice on your experiences with these pumps, or anything else Spectra related that would’ve helped to know!
The other specs on the pump are the same as the S1 and S2.
Truly it makes no sense because they are EXACTLY THE SAME minus the battery 😂
Comparison discussions between Spectra models
Trying to decide between that and the S1.
Discussion on availability and approval in Canada
Why is the Spectra breast pump not available to buy in Canada? I'm assuming Health Canada hasn't approved it yet.
Discussion about efforts to obtain the pump across the border
May I ask where you found this pump in the states? I live in canada and cannot find or can order it.
i saw on amazon usa that’s what i’m gonna try and do. just order it from there & pay the shipping
Discussion on the value of the Spectra S2 compared to other pumps
Right now I’m using the momcozy s12 double electric pumps and I feel like my output isn’t that great, so I wanted to try the Spectra since it’s hospital grade and seems to having raving reviews.
Discussion of possible alternatives and comparisons
I recently ordered the pumpables genie advanced to have when I go back to work and I think I actually like it more. Somehow the settings seem to empty me better and faster than the spectra.
User experiences with different breast pumps
That’s abnormal - nothing wrong with it but usually the BB is 10x stronger than the spectra
Discussion about transitioning between pumps
I immediately noticed a decrease in yield when using the BB (it was not effective at emptying me), so I reached out to BB customer service for help via the chat on their website.
Trying to get through this transition without a drop in supply and I really appreciate the insight!
Comparison with Baby Buddha and other pumps
I'm fed up of long manual emptying after a pump!
The spectra is obviously less portable. The S1 is easy to tote around the house with you, but that takes up one of your hands.
I believe it also works with pumpin pals and other systems.
The baby Buddha is much more efficient for me! It takes me 8-10 mins to empty with less hands on massage.
Comparative experience with Medela pumps
Used it 12x a day and it was amazing.
