Snoop's Take

The Midland T51X3VP3 X-TALKER Walkie-Talkie set is a compact and efficient communication tool designed for outdoor activities such as camping and hiking. Featuring a long-range capability of up to 28 miles in open areas, this three-pack of two-way radios operates on 22 FRS channels, ensuring reliable communication in various environments. Consumer feedback highlights the reliable performance of these radios, with one user stating, "it’s super simple/basic but it works like a champ." Many users appreciate the good value for straightforward communication needs, emphasizing that "either way, these radios will fill my needs." However, some drawbacks have been noted, such as misleading range claims and the lack of repeater capabilities, suggesting potential limitations for more serious users. Positive Feedback

I’m receiving repeater traffic and I put in the ctcss code but I’m not sure if I can transmit on these, if they’re receiving the traffic are they capable of transmitting?

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Reliable performance as a base station
it’s super simple/basic but it works like a champ.
Good power output (50 watts)
the biggest advantage of the Midland is the 50 watts.
Enjoying the features of the GXT67
Home Run for Midland
Good value for simple two-way radios
who cares what the box or specs say just focus on the Watts output by the device.
Basic $40 units from Best Buy work very well.
Good for basic communication needs
Either way, these radios will fill my needs.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Walkie-talkies are not repeater capable.
I’m receiving repeater traffic and I put in the ctcss code but I’m not sure if I can transmit on these, if they’re receiving the traffic are they capable of transmitting?
Midland has not made walkies that are repeater capable yet.
Advertised ranges may not be accurate
There are FRS and GMRS radios which are good for short distance line of sight. But I caution against believing the distances that are typically advertised with them.
Limited power levels for FRS radios
I think it's 2w for FRS, for instance.
Privacy codes do not offer actual privacy
'privacy codes' don't offer **any** privacy.
Sale of mixed FRS/GMRS radios may be illegal
Basically they are stopping allowing mixed FRS/GMRS radios.
Limited power affects range on FRS channels
Honestly, you may never notice a difference.
Misleading power output claims
their power output is 2.5W.
The GXT1000 series two way radios put out 2.8 watts on high power, 1.5 watts medium, and .5 watts on low power.
Midland and Motorola will do anything including the "50 mile range" to try and get people to by the radios
Older models may have better specs
The older GXT1000 radios were 5W.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Need for reliable communication devices for emergency situations
I’ve never purchased this kind of equipment before.
Fully unlocked and programmable if you're thinking ham radio fars for communication.
Excitement for new Midland radios
Both look like they have 5 watts, USB-C charging, wide band, repeater access, dual watch and noaa.
It’s about time.
Discussion about antenna usage and limitations
Maybe I can use that to assist in this process.
Your range is typically like 2-3 miles so you probably aren't going to deal with tons of interference because your range is so short.
Discussion about FRS radios lacking removable antennas
The general rule of thumb here to follow is FRS radios will NOT have removable antennas where GMRS radios will.
Insights on radio communication dynamics in mountainous areas
Just understand how radios work, if you're on the highest point in the mountain, everyone can hear you, but not everyone can communicate back to you.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Considerations for stealth installation in vehicles
Midland Radios I've been looking at an MXT575 for my car to stealth install.
The heat thing lol. I realized that the rear AC ducts for the back seats run right over the radio, and hopefully should keep it cool in there.
Alternative suggestions for better range
Use a repeater. GMRS or Ham.
Discussion about the convenience of radios over cell phones for communication while snowboarding
Two Way Radios for Snowboarding? Hello all,
after a bit of amazon searching, it seems like these are fairly well liked:

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion about alternative brands and models
I have done that and had great results.
Discussion about installation of Midland radios
Has anyone installed a two way radio in this slot?
I received a Midland MXT400 for Christmas, and I'd like to pop the center console out, dremel out the back of this otherwise unused cubby, and install it there.
I’m mounted my midland radio on the side of the console. There’s not a lot of room behind that spot.
From what I've read, two way radios designed for installation in a vehicle consume enough 12 V power when transmitting that they typically require a dedicated circuit from the battery.
Mention of alternative communication options
GMRS.
Confusion about UHF vs VHF channels
It shouldn't matter, but it seems like it's going to be awkward to communicate with my buddies if they have Baofeng — now I'll have to look at a chart to tell them what frequency I am on.
Legally you need a GMRS license to operate the Midland, the GMRS license covers you and your whole family, all for $35 every 10 years.
I understand I can only use it to monitor the weather or listen to other channels until I get my license.
Advice to engage with radio communities for learning
Everything from our cell phones, Bluetooth, fire alarms, garage door openers, hospital pagers, aeronautical communication systems like ADS-B, ect, is all run off of electromagnetic energy.
Skepticism about AI-generated information on radios
although changing antennas might make said device illegal?
they're all FRS radios which are not very powerful and in the first several Amazon reviews for the Uniden radio, the reviewers mention a range of one mile.
Discussion about recommendations for beginner GMRS radios
What two way radios would you guys recommended for a beginner?
This guy has pretty good reviews on radios [Not A Rubicon]
I've had a great experience with them.
Do yourself a favor, and try any of the Baofeng gmrs radios to start.
Discussion about licensing for GMRS radios
Most don't even state watts but a few here and there.
I love them I bought one as a bundle that came with two handhelds and a charging base that I installed in the center console of my Jeep JK.
Exploration of alternative radio options
CB is an option. For higher power there are GMRS radios that require a license ($70 for 10 years) but no test.
Mention of older, cheaper radios that still worked well on mountains
Really any of them will work, me and my dad used to use them back when I was younger.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about reliability of other brands' claims
Fake HT from "Rapid Radios". Reading through the comments on this is infuriating.
And yet their “radios” absolutely do! 😂
Concerns about reliability of LTE-based communication in emergencies
They run on LTE. If cell service is down, these are down, too.
They are snake oil salesmen those are PTT cell phones on the old LTE network.
Concerns about technical capabilities of GMRS radios.
Repeaters use two separate frequencies, one for input and another for output. Your radio would need to be able switch between the two automatically.
Concerns about effective range of walkie-talkies
What is the actual range of “long range”? Hook me up with The info please!
Most handheld walkie talkies you will get 2-3 miles range without a repeater
I wonder how useful those are going to be if SHTF and everyone and their dog is using them.
Discussion about the limitations of walkie-talkie range
although it is technically possible in extreme conditions, it is very unlikely that you will be able to get a reliable range of 50 miles with any consumer grade non-licensed handheld radio in any real world conditions.
Most handheld VHF marine operate in the range of 156 MHz, and are pretty limited to 25 miles over water on a good day.
Just the curvature of the earth will limit the range.
Caution about public airwaves for children
I believe almost any FRS radio will do. Just a word of caution, since we are talking about children, and being a parent myself I want to remind you that anything they say or communicate is going out over the public airwaves.
Legal limits on radio performance
All legal unlicensed radios are going to be the same range.
Mesh networking and friends.
Skepticism about advertised range
Any radio that advertises distance is using a best case scenario rarely if ever found in the real world purely for marketing purposes.
FRS is good for about 2 miles
