They work pretty well.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Durable and robust design
They work pretty well.
For farm work, I would suggest the retevis RT-29 great radio, waterproof and simple to use.
While I don’t have a GM30 I will say the KG-905G is hands down the best I have tested, has superheterodyne receive architecture (rare in the GMRS world), is closest to a true 5 watts, IP66 rated, rugged.
My use case is pretty simple, my Midland FRS radios barely cut it range wise at the ski mountain with my family.
User-friendly programming via Chirp
I'm assuming that's just pre-programmed tones and if you pop it open with chirp then we're just back to normal gmrs land.
Chirp now support for RB26, so yes this RB26 can be programming through Chirp.
it’s Chirp compatible, can monitor VHF frequencies and sounds surprisingly good.
Good sound quality
I have that radio and love it.
Check out the Retevis RA85, while the antenna is glued and you need the RA685_Plus software to change the radio from Narrow to Wide Band, its an amazing radio.
Reliable and well-built units
I have found them to be reliable, well built, and full featured for what they are.
They’re actually quite solid units.
Comparably better than other cheap brands
Retevis and Anytone are the two that separates out as considerably better than the lot.
Nice build quality
Very nice build quality and easily covered a 3 mile range of mostly open area.
Compact and easy to carry
Would be nice if manufacturing would either put USB C in battery packs or preferably the radios.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Limited capabilities for repeater use
The repeater you have won’t work if you programmed it to use the same frequency for Tx and Rx.
Not the best compared to higher-end brands
Midland or Motorola will ALWAYS be your better radios, better built, better receivers, better filters, etc but they cost more $$
Legal concerns regarding frequency use
It's unlikely that this radio is legal to use in the U.S. without a license.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about brand perception in the amateur radio community
No frills, it transmits and receives, it is small and loud.
Discussion about USB-C charging option
Looking for my first GMRS and really like the USB-C charge option.
If you want USB charging I hear the radioddity gm-30 is really good for the price.
Importance of antenna for UHF frequencies
With GMRS, the antenna is pretty important. Since it's UHF, you want as much altitude as you can get because those higher frequencies work on line of sight.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

Comparison to other brands
Cheap enough that we always have 2 backups in a worktruck that we try to swap around so they're never like sitting there for 6mo uncharged.
We stopped using radios a few years back, and everyone just calls each other using our earbuds. So much better, especially for topo.
They're about $250 each last I checked, but they're made for marine abuse.
Discussion about alternative radios
Gotcha. Thank you. I will have to look for new radios that can work with this type of repeater then.
Looking for an inexpensive radio that works for about $40 or $50 and has enough features to be usable.
Mention of programming cable compatibility with Windows 10
Unless you really really really need USB charging, I'd look elsewhere.
Thank you that helps my decision, I'll look into the Radioddity gm-30 sploittastic recommended.
I hope this assists.
Discussion on GMRS licensing and legality
Radio advice, baofeng/retevis or Midland? I am going on a horseback trip in the Midwest and I want to get walkie talkies for myself and my wife.
Clarification on radio terminology
I've never owned a PTT
Discussion about GMRS licensing and ease of use
What radios would you recommend for a metro/suburban area with a reasonable range of 10-20 miles?
Look for a GMRS walkie, they’re typically more powerful and have better features.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Interoperability with other brands depends on CTCSS/DCS consistency
RB26 is not only able to interoperate with RETEVIS walkie-talkies. RB26 uses CTCSS/DCS signaling, so when interoperating with other brands of walkie-talkies, you need to consider whether the CTCSS/DCS is consistent.
Compatibility issues with different brands
They act like they are on completely different channels.
Under the old GMRS assignments, channel 7 was what channel 21 is now.
You might have to spend some time reverse engineering how it is programmed and/or pick up a programming cable.
Even though they are both channel 7, they represent different frequencies and thus cannot interoperate.
Discussion about brand perception
What do you guys think? Too good to be true?
