What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
High-quality instruments
Mitutoyo is still putting out the great instruments they always have.
How is the body attatched to the head? Anyone have one?
It's just a Starrett vernier micrometer thimble attached to a gauge. The thimble threads into the bo
I really like my Starrett 436, it's easy for my old eyes to read and I really like the thimble feel.
Precision and ease of reading
Mitutoyo digital is definitely the go-to for precision and ease of reading.
So easy to use and so repeatable.
They’re the best IMO.
Quality and longevity of Mitutoyo tools
I picked up this Mitutoyo micrometer up at a flee market for $8, it is still sealed in its plastic packaging and the logo tells me its from 1962 - 1965.
I'd think you got a steal especially since it's still in package, dudes can get a mitutoyo mic as a 20 yo apprentice, and still be using it by the time they retire.
I've been using my grandfather's old Starret 0-1 mic from the early 50's for 16 years and it calibrates to the tenth every year.
High-quality construction
To get straight to the point, these are OK, its like if the Sony XB series had a Redbull (not steroids) and had a little more energy, not dynamically different.
Are Mitutoyo digital micrometer parts interchangeable with analog ones.
I do find that it would not be a good buy for me, because I would very quickly learn the technique and wish that I could take the training wheels off and pursue a smoother shave via a smaller blade angle.
The balls represent the size of a newborn baby's head, which will pass through the female pelvis fairly easily, but will get stuck in the male pelvis.
Durable and long-lasting
you should just fix the tight thimble on your 293-340.
Good recommendation for learning micrometer scale
Pretty much any mitutoyo micrometer would be a good one.
The vernier on the mics aren't too bad, in fact that model was my go to at work.
Digital display is quick and easy to read
quick and easy to read, taking multiple measurements and writing or typing them is just easier when it's already written out.
It's faster to read, the metric/us unit button is VERY handy.
when you have the ability to instantly measure something in either system accurate to a couple thou, why risk doing unit conversions in your head all the time?
Very glad I got them too, very accurate and repeatability is great.
Metric/US unit conversion is convenient
I can see the Inch/MM button coming in very handy.
Helpful for learning and transitioning to micrometers
It helps a lot especially a digital mic. Already called dibs on his toolbox hehe only 3 more years and I get toys.
Holds calibration well under use
Mine still holds things pretty square when I’m welding.
Can be cleaned easily
And if they get dirty, throw them in the ultrasonic cleaner.
Reusable with a 'for reference only' sticker
Just put a "for reference only" sticker on it any you're back in business.
If that sticker is good enough for an ISO audit, it's good enough for me.
Ease of use and speed with digital micrometers
the quickness and cutting down on the chance of a misread when you’re in a hurry is pretty dang nice.
the chances of a miss read are slim to none. That and it is much faster.
Precision and accuracy in measurements
if you’re not sure, always check with a gauge block or rod and see how accurate it is before using.
If truly it needs to be right I’ll check my calibration with either.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Lever responsiveness issues
it takes too long for the 3 points to extend out to take measurements, makes it hard to use.
i just tried cleaning them as best i could with a rag with iso but is still the same.
Distinction between resolution and accuracy can be misunderstood
if you've got a part where a difference of 5 tenths is enough to make it go or no-go, then you sure as shit won't be using calipers to take that measurement, you'll use a micrometer with at least 0.0001" accuracy.
Calibration issues after minimal use
Hot take: Mitutoyo micrometers are actually trash.
Difficulty in reading analog tools for some users
he said he didn't know how to read it....
I can't honestly see ANY benefit to a tool that others have trouble reading.
Confusion with metric and imperial measurements
I don't know how to read mm on an imperial dial but the digitals read out just fine either way 🤷🏻‍♂️

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about the value of vintage Mitutoyo tools
What is the purpose of the extra thin anvils?
User engagement and relevance of the question
awesome. thanks for asking this question, as it's relevant to my current interests and needs.
Discussion on preferences between digital and dial calipers
I can pretty accurately estimate to within a couple tenths (ten-thousandths) with these.
Make the measurement with tools with proper resolution.
Discussion on the use of both digital and analog tools
Use painters tape to cover the decimal place maybe?
he can't get used to the extra decimal place.

Advice on fixing seized micrometer
Can anyone give advice on fixing my Mitutoyo Micrometer that is seized to the point of being stuck?
Twist it open instead of closed
It looks like the thumb lock is missing.
its been seized up and immovable for a week or so.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Mention of another brand as a competitor
Sylvac. Best on the market.
Price comparison with other brands
Don’t pay the inflated Brownell’s price, this is really just a starrett 207z can-seam micrometer.
Discussion about finding cheaper alternatives on eBay
I was seeing some starrett micrometer heads on ebay for dirt cheap and I'm tempted to attempt making something similar as a fun project.
Discussion about other brands and comparisons
Incredible accuracy if you want to buy a pack to fill your capabilities. Mechanical and well built.
Discussion on where to buy authentic Mitutoyo tools
Msc is where i get my mine, got browne and sharpe and mitutuyo from them.
it is still often the fastest way to get tools unless you have a MSC account with next day shipping.
Still good to check the quality of what you buy.
Discussion about cleaning methods for maintenance
It’ll be good as new.
The anvils get gummed up.
Squirt a bit of iso on the anvils and work the action a few times, should free up.
Discussion about general micrometer repair methods
Does anyone have any information regarding micrometer repair that can be done in house?
It's not Mitutoyo specific but it might be helpful.
In other words the most basic of repairs... And even then the mic may not be accurate.
Advice on removing gunk from the micrometer head
There may be no need to replace anything: just remove the gunk created by people oiling it.
Concerns about the necessity of high precision for home machining
Unless youre doing grinding (as in, cylindrical or surface grinding) regularly, theres no need to chase this sort of precision.
Unless you are doing unusually precise and complicated work at home, chances are resolutions of .0001" is overkill.
Debate on teaching analog reading skills
I'd probably introduce students to the use of a vernier calipers before a mic.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about competitor's quality control
We want to avoid that. Just Mitutoyo calibre, good quality instruments.
I always rooted for starret, but they're really not making a great case for themselves.
They will make one for us but I'm still waiting on the quote.
Concerns about counterfeit Mitutoyo tools
I'm looking to buy a real mitutoyo caliper, but I'm leery of most resellers as I know there are a lot of forgeries out there.
Cause he wants Mitutoyo calipers, but not Mitutoyo prices.
Issues with online resellers and shipping reliability
that's a terrible way to do it.
Discussion about potential replacement and confidence in measurement
Probably get a nice new mitutoyo for 3 bills.
Concerns about spindle condition affecting usability
If it's so bent you can't remove it then you might be SOL.
Discussion about the value of learning basic mechanical tools
These older and simpler style micrometers have less moving parts, require less maintenance, and are easier to fix when they do have problems.
Technically that is a digital micrometer. 😊
