Positive Feedback

I'm not a fan of gauges like this when you can get a mitutoyo multi anvil micrometer and have a more versatile tool for about the same cost.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Mitutoyo offers reliable instruments
Mitutoyo is still putting out the great instruments they always have.
How is the body attatched to the head? Anyone have one?
What is your go to 0-1 micrometer ? Hi , retired machine shop owner here . And now hobby machine sho
Mitutoyo digital. So easy to use and so repeatable.
Ease of reading with Mitutoyo micrometers
Mitutoyo digital is definitely the go-to for precision and ease of reading.
Pretty much any mitutoyo micrometer would be a good one.
Mitutoyo micrometers are reliable tools
I know a digital one is probably better but I don't trust them.
Quick and easy to read measurements
quick and easy to read, taking multiple measurements and writing or typing them is just easier when it's already written out.
It's faster to read, the metric/us unit button is VERY handy.
when you have the ability to instantly measure something in either system accurate to a couple thou, why risk doing unit conversions in your head all the time?
Handy metric/US unit conversion
I can see the Inch/MM button coming in very handy.
Accurate and repeatable measurements
Very glad I got them too, very accurate and repeatability is great.
Still holds calibration for practical use
Mine still holds things pretty square when I’m welding.

Preference for more versatile tools over this micrometer
I'm not a fan of gauges like this when you can get a mitutoyo multi anvil micrometer and have a more versatile tool for about the same cost.
High repair costs for digital micrometers.
a couple of Mitutoyo repair shops quoted me almost what it would cost me new to repair.
Lever is unresponsive and slow for measurements
it takes too long for the 3 points to extend out to take measurements, makes it hard to use.
Unnecessary precision for hobbyists
Unless youre doing grinding (as in, cylindrical or surface grinding) regularly, theres no need to chase this sort of precision.
Vernier scale may be challenging for beginners
I'd rather gouge my eyes out than learning another Vernier scale but I need a micrometer and I was eyeing the metric equivalent of this.
Easily goes out of calibration
Hot take: Mitutoyo micrometers are actually trash.
Material quality is poor and feels cheap
The material looks nothing like advertised. It’s not stretchy whatsoever it feels like it came from the dollar store.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about the value of vintage Mitutoyo tools
I picked up this Mitutoyo micrometer up at a flee market for $8, it is still sealed in its plastic packaging.
8$ for it, I'd think you got a steal especially since it's still in package.
Curiosity about the purpose of specific micrometer features
What is the purpose of the extra thin anvils?
Inquiry about the spindle's condition affecting removal
If it's so bent you can't remove it then you might be SOL.
General conversation about machining practices
The boredom of pulling the quill down to drill holes, then deburring has been greatly reduced!
Discussion on preference between digital and dial calipers
I can pretty accurately estimate to within a couple tenths with these.
If you've got a part where a difference of 5 tenths is enough to make it go or no-go, then you sure as shit won't be using calipers to take that measurement.
I like digital. It gives me a number, I'm seeing numbers from print it.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Using a sticker for reference can suffice for audits
Just put a "for reference only" sticker on it any you're back in business.
If that sticker is good enough for an ISO audit, it's good enough for me.
Ultrasonic cleaning can restore functionality
And if they get dirty, throw them in the ultrasonic cleaner.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Comparative pricing of similar tools raises concerns
I was seeing some starrett micrometer heads on ebay for dirt cheap and I'm tempted to attempt making something similar as a fun project.
Don’t pay the inflated Brownell’s price, this is really just a starrett 207z can-seam micrometer, made for measuring can seam heights.
Discussion about the interchangeability of parts between digital and analog micrometers.
if it's broke it's junk anyway and you need to get your hands dirty to learn.
Preference for reliable suppliers for precision tools
Msc is where i get my mine, got browne and sharpe and mitutuyo from them.
Discussion on delivery reliability and stocking issues
Still good to check the quality of what you buy.
Suggestions for cleaning and repairing the micrometer
It’ll be good as new.
i just tried cleaning them as best i could with a rag with iso but is still the same.
The anvils get gummed up.
Squirt a bit of iso on the anvils and work the action a few times, should free up.
Advice on fixing seized micrometers
Can anyone give advice on fixing my Mitutoyo Micrometer that is seized to the point of being stuck?
Twist it open instead of closed
It looks like the thumb lock is missing.
its been seized up and immovable for a week or so.
Curiosity about micrometer repair processes
Does anyone have any information regarding micrometer repair that can be done in house?
In other words the most basic of repairs... And even then the mic may not be accurate.
Suggestions for using penetrating oil for maintenance
There may be no need to replace anything: just remove the gunk created by people oiling it.
Discussion on the value of mechanical vs digital tools
Unless you are doing unusually precise and complicated work at home, chances are resolutions of .0001" is overkill.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Negative reviews may attract trolls
Knowing the internet this is just going to invite trolls to make further 1 star reviews lmao.
Concerns over quality of other brands
We've been using Starrett heads but their QC seems to have tanked in the last year or so and we scrap almost 3% of our Starrett heads as soon as they're out of the box.
I always rooted for starret, but they're really not making a great case for themselves.
They will make one for us but I'm still waiting on the quote.
Sylvac. Best on the market.
Concerns over authenticity of sellers for Mitutoyo tools
I'm looking to buy a real mitutoyo caliper, but I'm leery of most resellers as I know there are a lot of forgeries out there.
Cause he wants Mitutoyo calipers, but not Mitutoyo prices.
it is still often the fastest way to get tools unless you have a MSC account with next day shipping.
A bit late when you have spent a whole year sending undelivered birthday cards.
Recommendations for repair resources
It's not Mitutoyo specific but it might be helpful.
Concern about measurement confidence post-repair
would you have total confidence over the entire measurement range? Probably get a nice new mitutoyo for 3 bills.
