Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Splatter screen performance depends on mesh design
In practice, it comes down to product design.
Splatter screens effectively reduce splatter without trapping steam
I'd recommend a splatter screen.
Splatter screen works really well, agreed.
Use an oil cover, or a splash guard instead! They're specifically made for that purpose and do a pre
Yes, they work well.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Using a plate as a microwave cover
I often just cover with a plate.
Lid as an alternative to splatter screen
Just use a lid?
Additional techniques to reduce splatter
A paper towel on top of the spatter guard will catch some extra oil.
Maybe turn the heat down? Idk it’ll still splatter but maybe not as far?
Use a pan with higher side walls? Might help it stay in the pan.
I just cut a piece of parchment that covered the top of the pan and then dropped my splatter guard on top of that.
Alternate uses for splatter screens (e.g., as a sieve)
turns out it makes for a great way to drain water out of pans and not too shabby as a sieve to strain chicken stock.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Stainless steel cookware require seasoning and technique
I’m so frustrated. I thought stainless steel was suppose to be great for cooking.
You have to Learn to cook with it.
It definitely needs preheating, but too hot is definitely a concern for SS.
Couldn’t pay me enough to go back to nonstick.
Splatter screens reduce splatter but still require cleanup
They work better than nothing but you’ll still have to clean up a bit after frying.
I think of them as a useful safety measure, and kind of a wash as a labor-saving device.
One‐size design causes overhang issues
Haven't had smoking issues, though! I've had cheaper ones burn/blacken really easy bc of my cheap stove burner in the past.
Proper oil usage reduces splatter
The only thing I can think is that you're using too much oil.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Silicone microwave covers can promote mold growth
All that moisture in microwave during use and after that hangs around that cover or Any silicone Causes Mold mildew.
Quality variability among splatter screens
Does anyone have recommendations on a good one? For some reason trying to find a quality one online has been a daunting task.
So I've tried a few of these over the years and every single one of them has ended up smoking, even after washing.
Inevitable stovetop cleanup despite using splatter screens
I have gradually come to accept that cooking on the stovetop nearly always results in cleanup of grease/food splatter.
Every time I cook burgers the fat aerosolizes and anything within a few feet of the stove gets coated in a fine layer of grease.
Lid use traps moisture and steams food, not recommended
If you use a lid you are trapping moisture inside. This will result in your steak steaming instead of searing.
Useless kitchen tool experiences
It is the most useless kitchen tool I own.
I pretty much either mushes them or just pushes them around and makes a mess.
Debate over cooking techniques with torches and screens
I have never noticed a problem using either MAPP, Propane, or Butane.
It didn't really do anything and I'm sure it comes out better with a torch but we don't have one.
