Snoop's Take

The Sony 65 Inch OLED 4K Ultra HD TV BRAVIA 8 Smart Google TV (2024 Model) is a high-end television designed to deliver stunning picture quality and a seamless smart experience. It features over 8 million self-lit pixels for pure blacks, vibrant colors courtesy of XR Triluminos Pro, and cutting-edge processing that adapts every scene in real time. Community chatter praises its exceptional picture processing and upscaling with one user declaring, “It is by far and away the best looking TV I've owned.” While fans laud its impressive audio performance and unique design elements, critics grumble about its gaming shortcomings and a price tag that feels a bit inflated. The conversation is lively, with some noting it’s ideal for movie nights but hinting that LG might edge it out for hardcore gaming scenarios. In summary, if you’re after a home theater marvel with unmatched picture quality and smart features, this Sony TV is a strong contender, albeit with a few quirks that gamers should weigh before diving in.

Positive Feedback

I hear people rave about LG OLEDs all the time, especially for gaming where they are arguably better than Sony's (and cheaper).

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Superior audio quality
Sony TVs has better audio.
Excellent movie picture quality
For movies yes most likely but for gaming LG is a slightly better option.
Excellent picture processing/upscaling
Sony has picture processing that is only rivaled by panasonic.
Unique acoustic screen and mounting design
Cool shit sometimes really just costs more.
I think if you're not going for 3rd party sound, the Sony is better.
Long-lasting durability
If you want a TV that lasts decades, go Sony.
Not sure if newer ones will last as long but they've convinced me to try another one if this thing ever dies.
User-friendly Sony interface
I prefer The Sony user interface/ OS over LGs.
Cost-effective alternative to premium models
It’s a budget question really.
I went for the 77' B8 for about half the cost and couldn't be happier.
Excellent picture processing and upscaling performance
It is by far and away the best looking TV I've owned.
The main reason I love my Sony is the upscaling is so much better than everyone else’s.
Responsive OLED performance for gaming and movies
OLED's response is faster than LED so they're a dream to game on.
OLED is just better. Not as bright but still brighter than some 5-6 years old LED.
With how long you keep TVs I’d get an OLED with a nice warranty.
Exceptional picture processing and upscaling
Sonys processing in impeccable. Night and day difference when you’re streaming lower quality content.
the upscaling and processing seems absolutely fantastic.
Sony + XR is superior to any.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Inferior gaming performance
I hear people rave about LG OLEDs all the time, especially for gaming where they are arguably better than Sony's (and cheaper).
Overpriced compared to competitors
They still have a few tricks up their sleeve that makes them feel like they can get away with it.
Motion processing issues
I was very hesitant to switch to OLED given the motion issues but seeing as most people said it's been mostly resolved via processing I took a dive.
Buying a separate device isn't wonderful advice I get it, but its what worked for me.
Vertical banding issues
Pretty unfortunate for a 3k purchase.
If Sony still balks, contact them via Twitter where everyone can see your pics.
This what LG usually recommends and since they make the panel.
Most movies fine but obviously dark movies I can see them.
Insufficient brightness levels in Sony OLED panels
I prefer my c3 due to the brightness difference. Sonys good for ps5 but its super easy on the c3 to just set up the hdr.
If the room gets a lot of sunlight, you might want to avoid OLED.
VRR feature activation compromises other picture enhancements
Enabling VRR disables full array local dimming (FALD) and X-tended dynamic range.
Potential display quality degradation over time
There is a risk. A small risk, but nevertheless it's there.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Emphasis on processor-driven picture quality over panel quality
The TVs processor is the artist.
TLDR; processing. All a panel does is turn on and off.
Discussion of panel sourcing and manufacturing strategy
They make larger panels for monitors, professional which cost quite a penny and probably bank a lot of profit for Sony.
Sony do make their own OLED panel for their high end professional and medical monitor in Nagoya.
LG probably makes one of the best.
Panel sourcing and manufacturing strategy
I would assume they sell their panels at a profit so that would account for at least part of the price difference.
Emerging RGB backlight technology and Sony's evolving tech approach
All the journalist came back very impressed.
Sony has just been working really hard to on the processing aspect and not caring if they ship first.
Yah still waiting for that to happen.
Sony had an rgb-backlit lcd several years ago, before they abandoned them because they were too expensive.
Attractive in-store appearance
I thought the Bravia 8 looked pretty great in the store.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Sony model naming explanations
how do we know the meaning of which letter at which position in terms of panel type *(display technology)* ? price range? release date?
- A = 4K OLED Panel (WOLED or QD-OLED)
The higher number is the higher end more advanced TV.
That same YouTube channel also has this video where they explain Sony’s models:
Viewing distance affects 4K TV effectiveness
If you are sitting over 3 meters (7 ft) away from the TV I would advise against buying a 4k tv because it's not going to be worth it.
Pricing and tier positioning debates among Sony TV models
But those 150 nits make a massive difference. No way i would pay more for the sony.
personally i'd regret getting anything else just seeing some of my friends basic-ass QLEDS.
Price drop and market promotion news
Sony just dropped their prices on the Bravia 7 this week.
Discussion on product alternatives and pricing tiers
We got an 83” A80L and it’s honestly amazing.
Bravia 8 or C4 are your only realistic option.
To be fair the tv is amazing, but looking back, i think i would have been satisfied with an 80 series oled.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
PWM sensitivity/flickering concerns
Sony's look much much better, but seem to have a sort of flickering effect going on.
Personally I have never found this to be irritating or fatiguing on the eyes.
SONY’s OLED should not look much much better than LG’s cause they are using panels from LG.
Oleds make my eyes bleed.
Lack of 1440p support in certain Sony models
99% of games right now do not do 4k/120hz.
That’s a huge factor if someone is connecting a pc to one of the hdmi ports and doesn’t have good enough gpu to push good 4k frame rates.
Delayed feature rollout and timeline uncertainties (e.g. VRR on PS5)
But damn Sony is behind when it comes features.
