Very unsafe for rough and out of balance wood.
Not suitable for serious hobbyists
I don't really think it helps with learning/ motivation to work on a low quality, maybe crooked or untrue machine.
Concerns about reliability out of the box
Definitely concerned about it breaking or not working right out of the box.
Requires significant adjustment for optimal performance
It does an okay job but requires a lot of work and patience, mainly in getting the play out of the cross slide.
Perceived as overpriced compared to alternatives
Don't buy the HF it's over priced.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on the benefits of using a spindle brake
Recently I thought to myself, "why am I bothering with all this gear shifting when I can just hold my foot on the brake".
No and in fact it’s better for the machine than tightening against the spindle gear train.
You're not gonna hurt the gears.
Many shops no longer resurface rotors
I'd rather have new pads and rotors than pad slapping and resurfacing the old rotors.
Several told me the labor for doing it would be as much as brand new ones are; that's something I think a bit crazy since they don't HAVE to attend to the machine the entire time.
Lathes differ by size, power, and precision
Can someone explain to me in simple terms what the difference between the types of lathes are? I'm a
Look closely at the details, most lathes differ by size, power and precision.
General labels for lathes have a lot of crossover
They're general labels and not distinct categories - there's a lot of crossover between the descriptions.
Engine lathes are general use, brake lathes are specialized
Brake lathes are specialized for turning brake rotors and should be ignored.
Discussion about the effectiveness of drilled/slotted rotors
All that effort to have bigger brakes seems so wasted when people use drilled/slotted/both rotors on a street car.
They're really just for looks. Get some centric blanks, save yourself the money.
In short, slots can be useful if pad glazing is a problem... Drills and dimples are just stupid shit that wanna-be racers put on their car.
Running slotted rotors and no cooling is a band-aid solution.

These guys have really shown the middle finger to programmed obsolescence.
Thanks for compiling this - very useful.
Legitimately very useful - I was about to tear apart an old car to look for useful salvage.
Use cases for mini lathes versus larger lathes
If you use it between the limits of it's capabilities it will be OK.
Concept of 'live tooling' in larger CNC lathes
This dramatically increases the capabilities of the machine, but is pretty expensive.
Debate on brake cooling methods
Brake ducts were invented to help cooling.
If they were ducted, then they'd be cooler.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Difficulty finding places to turn drums
Couldn't find anywhere to do it.
Advice on maintaining the spindle brake shoes
The shoes will wear, so get a couple of spare sets.
Perspective on buying used equipment
You get what you pay for IMHO.
Common practice to lathe rotors when replacing pads
It seemed to make sense, but I haven’t heard of this before unless the brakes/rotors have unusually been abused from rough driving.
I usually have the rotors turned when replacing pads or just replace the rotors….that’s just what I do.
In Mexico this is normal practice.
Sounds like its just the dealership trying to pocket a few more bucks.
Advice on checking rotors for warping or scoring
I find this provides a better long term solution than turning rotors which I see as a temporary band-aid type fix.
Finding cheaper alternatives for rotors online
You can find good rotors on line a lot cheaper than the shop is going to sell them for and install them yourself.
1A auto saved me a bunch on my Camaro rotors.

Historical perspective on the evolution of brake lathes
Portable brake rotor lathe. Used for resurfacing brake rotors for a proper brake job.
“Until recently”... that specific company Pro Cut has been making these since the 90s.... 30 years ago.
My grandpa used to machine the rotors while on the vehicle and he died in 1981.
I thought that was odd.
Challenges with consistency in mini lathes
it's a crapshoot on if you'll get a nice one or a dud.
Mixed experiences with upgrading mini lathes
out of the box it was really rough.
Historical context on brake maintenance practices
Way back in the 80's I'd have them turned. Now I replace them.
Perception of brake parts pricing and quality
It’s funny how many people on here think buying cheap brakes is a flex.
And people think they’re entitled to the highest quality for the cheapest price.
Concerns about resurfacing rotors with hotspots
It doesn't make sense to me why they couldn't be resurfaced.
Sounds about right.
Your shop isn't screwing you, get new rotors.
Concerns about the performance of aftermarket rotors
I'll probably get that long out of my current pad/rotor set up.
Drilled rotors are just gonna connect the dots anyway.
evacuate gasses, yes.
General commentary on brake maintenance practices
How about something that would actually help, like better brake pads?
Then you're overworking your pads.
I'm still going with the slotted or cross drilled rotors just because they look so cool!
