Snoop's Take

The Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens is designed for Canon SLR cameras, offering a versatile zoom range ideal for capturing distant subjects. This lens is particularly favored by budget-conscious beginners and those looking to explore telephoto photography without breaking the bank. Users have shared positive experiences, noting that "it’s capable of producing above average frames" while also acknowledging its limitations, such as its reputation as one of the worst lenses Canon produces. Despite mixed reviews, many find it a suitable entry point for those just starting out in photography, especially with its compatibility across various EF mount bodies. In summary, while the Canon EF 75-300mm lens may not stand out in terms of optical quality, it serves as a valuable tool for newcomers and hobbyists. Its affordability and ease of use make it a decent option for those looking to dip their toes into telephoto photography, though more advanced photographers might seek better alternatives. Overall, it's recommended for beginners who prioritize budget over top-tier performance.

If you're on an extremely tight budget, it'll be better than not having a telephoto lens.

Positive Feedback

I'm seeing a lot of reviews that this is one of the worst lenses for Canon 🥲

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Good value for budget-conscious beginners
If you're on an extremely tight budget, it'll be better than not having a telephoto lens.
I don't feel too bad now about my purchase lol.
If you buy a used one for $50 or less, it's fine as a introduction into telephoto lenses.
Produces images with lots of character
They are beautiful and help me produce images with lots of character.
Vintage lenses work well on APS-C cameras
It's lovely to use vintage glass on APS-C sensor cameras.
Excellent sharpness.
Sturdy and easy to use for beginners
I recently handed one of my spare bodies with a cheap lens on it to a 7 year old at a family function and I got a full roll of great photos back.
I unloaded most of my 35mm collection that was collecting dust to a kid who was stoked to have them.
Compatible with all EF mount bodies
The short answer is yes. Any, and all EF mount lenses will fit on these EF mount bodies.
Yes, the nice thing about the EF EOS line is that the EF mount lenses are compatible throughout the film and digital camera eras.
Fully compatible with all EOS film bodies
My advice: stick to Canon lenses.
If you want guaranteed compatibility then go Canon.
Sharpness and contrast improvements with modern EF lenses
You get a level of sharpness and contrast that was a bit more difficult to get in those days.
Capable of producing above average frames
It’s capable of producing above average frames but it is very very cheep in terms of build quality.

Reputation as one of the worst Canon lenses
I'm seeing a lot of reviews that this is one of the worst lenses for Canon 🥲
It *is* the worst lens Canon keeps in production. But it is insanely good at being cheap.
Some vintage lenses may vignette on full frame
some will vignette on full frame mirror less cameras, APS-c makes this a non issue.
Loss of resolution with vintage lenses
the images have great quality and aren’t meant to be compared to super sharp (sometimes too sharp) modern lenses.
Using small sensors diminishes the purpose of vintage lenses
you lose a lot of the point of the lenses when you use a rather small sensor.
Limited ISO range for advanced photography
You can shoot 6 or 3200 but it won’t be at box speed.
I could just load these into a more affordable and reliable autofocusing Rebel T2.
Terrible optical reputation
I understand that this lens has quite a bad reputation.
That lens is not worth buying no matter how much of a beginner you are.
Better alternatives exist at similar prices
The EF 75-300mm though does have a terrible reputation because it the worst lens canon currently makes optically.
The EF-S 55-250 STM (has to be STM) is the price performance winner having perfect optics and a stabilizer.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
All Canon EF lenses fit all EOS EF cameras.
FWIW, right now I’m shooting with a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM on the 650, and it works great.
Discussion about lens selection and alternative options
best lens for versatile photography hey y’all i have a canon eos rebel t7 for about two years and i really want a lens that can take great versatile pictures especially portrait/events!
A good lens will take you further than a new body.
Get this one. It’s currently on an incredible sale from canon for $450.
An alternative would be the venerable 17-55 f2.8 which is the L-equivalent for crop sensors.
Debate about the importance of camera features versus manual control
It's about how the process makes you feel.
Use manual mode. You can shoot at any ISO.
Mention of Canon's comprehensive lens information
Canon also has a very nicely presented site includes all of this information along with images of each.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
DIY lens projects are more feasible with mirrorless cameras
While it looks like a fun project, I only have Canon DSLR body's, and I always see people doing these projects with mirrorless cameras.
They require being placed around 20mm from the sensor, which is smack dab in the middle of the mirror on a DSLR.
it's a lot more feasible.
Discussion about achieving vintage looks using older lenses
might try some of the crappy older ones for a toy lens type look if that's the goal.
It isn't mainstream anymore, but it will never die.
Discussion about using older lenses on film cameras
I own a Canon EOS 10 from 1990 or so, works like charm.
Discussion on using modern lenses on film cameras
I’m not very familiar with Canon lenses though (brand name or 3rd party), so I’d love some thoughts or testimonies!
Absolutely the way!

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
The lens can yield good photos with proper technique
Geez, we need to pin that Death Valley shot to the sub as an example of "it's not the gear, it's the photographer" — that's a great shot!
Discussion about lens selection and system advantages
Having access to all of Nikon’s modern and affordable f mount lenses is a huge plus for their systems.
Can't deny the selection of glass!
F mount of EF mount will serve you well if you want nice glass on 35mm.
From the sense of a hobbyist photographer, the 5 does 95% of what the 9 will do for 10% of the price.
Discussion about the impact of crop factors on lens performance
I only shoot with vintage lenses on my Fuji xt3.
Confusion about modern camera systems and lens compatibility
Photography or videography is art, is subjective, and is much more about the subject matter than the gear that’s used.
Compatibility issues with newer EF lenses on older EOS cameras.
All **Canon made** EF lenses will work.
its auto focus system is as basic as it gets.
Discussion around lens selection for specific Canon EOS film cameras.
Older Sigma/Tamron lenses tend to be softer than the Canon counterparts, but tend to be a lot cheaper.
Compatibility with various Canon DSLRs and mirrorless cameras
I've been thinking about trying out a used DSLR, with the idea that I go for just the body and use the lenses I have already to save on some cash.
any DSLR that ends in “D” (e.g. 7D, 90D, 600D) will work with that lens.
To sum it up, any Canon Digital camera with interchangeable lenses will work just fine with your lenses, retaining autofocus and autoexposure.
Yeah, that's an EF mount lens, so it will go on any EF mount camera.
Discussion about using existing lenses with a new DSLR
Can I ask how you know this?
Confusion about lens placement for DSLR vs. mirrorless
You can't just place the lens anywhere, it has to be placed in the exact location where it is in focus.
The industry REALLY should have come up with a less clunky term than 'interchangeable lens camera'.
Discussion about Canon lens compatibility
here's a complete list of all Canon EF, New FD, FD, and FL lenses for your enjoyment and reference.
Would be easier to set a column for lens mount then try to use FF VS APS-C notation.
Discussion on adapter needs for newer cameras
Yes, EF lenses work on any EOS camera (just need adapters if it’s an EOS R or EOS M camera).
Clarification on EF vs EF-S compatibility
Original Canon EF-S lenses don't even fit mechanically to old bodies (EF).
But guys this is EF not EF-S.
General discussion on Canon lens selection and compatibility
it works perfectly and you can get one for 400 used now I think.
Discussion on price fluctuations and deals
My point was they are cheep.
Buy a used one in Excellent condition from mpb for $60.
Exploration of telephoto lens options for beginners
Just because you’re a beginner doesn’t mean you have to suffer poor gear.
Discussion about alternative lenses for Canon EF mount cameras
I'm looking for a lens that I could use for group photos or just have more range in smaller rooms.
Canon EF-S 10-22.
you have a crop body so EFS 17-55 f2.8 to go, it's a hidden L lens.
10-22mm or 10-18mm, both are good lenses.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on the appeal of vintage lenses
There's a reason these auto features exist. They help us get the shots we want, how we want.
I'm here to get photos, not to 'be seen' getting photos.
Debate on whether sharpness matters for casual users
Buy the damn lens if it’s better than your kit lens.
