It’s a good enough camera, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Great for various photography styles
Freaking GREAT camera. I have known many professionals who have used them, especially for Sports/Birds/Wildlife.
Versatile lens compatibility
The D7200 is a great camera and the focus drive means your lens options are greater including some great vintage and FX lenses if that’s your thing.
Great for learning photography skills
You WILL learn from it. You'll learn to focus, meter, and letting time be a part of it.
I learned photography on digital and have only ever shot film using old point-and-shoot or disposable cameras many years ago.
I would say you cannot really go wrong here.
Compact and easy to carry
It’s fairly small, so it’s easy to take everywhere.
Pros: the glass is great, and it's pretty much dead simple to operate.
I absolutely love my L35AF, it's the only analogue camera I've ever had and I've never had any reason to upgrade it!
Good autofocus performance
I love the color and the price and auto focus for that lens and use it on a D3500.
Jk I love it, it's a gem.
Considering it’s their first AF camera, the system works surprisingly well — plus the lens very sharp.
Offers great color and contrast
It also had much better colors and contrast than the FX 35 1.8 lens.
Wide compatibility with older lenses
the most important gear is between your ears. It's easy to get hung up on all this "best" business, but chasing gear forever won't get you great pics.
But man, using lenses I bought literally 35 years ago *on my Z cameras*? It does kinda trip me out!
Good optical quality and build
You can just tell the quality in the build and the glass. Solid but not too heavy.
Versatile lens options available
Of the Japanese brands I’d probably say Nikon in terms of quality AND breadth of available lenses…
Colors pop and great framing
Japan - Nikon F80 - Nikkor 28-105mm + 35mm AF-D - Various stocks Yes I know, yet another Japan post.
Honestly everyone of these photos are punchy. The colors pop.
Compact and portable design
It’s incredibly capable in a very compact package. A real gem.
It’s crazy good but requires more effort than usual to get the most out of it.
Sharp image quality
The 28mm F2.8 AI-S will blow your Series E 28 out of the water completely.
Unique features in lenses enhance creativity
wow, that is such a cool feature built into the lens.
Great lens for achieving high-quality images
Pro cameras aren't about being *able* to take better photos, it's about making it *easier* to take better photos in demanding situations.
Well... The thing is, that little bastard is one of the best Nikkor lenses ever.
Versatile for various photography situations
Honestly sensor tech/image quality hasn't changed a lot over the years.
Good performance with older cameras
And that DX 35/1.8G is probably one of the best deals in photography.
D700 + 35/1.8 is a brilliant cheap combo.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Not as advanced as higher-end models
It’s a good enough camera, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it.
Lack of advanced features compared to newer models
I used the 28mm series E for years, but it’s really garbage. Ha!

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on lens settings for beginners
Do you have the focus switch set to AF on your lens, and the AF-S option selected in camera?
I set the focus switch to af but its still the same, i also do not see an af-s option on the camera.
having those cone shaped highlights in the center of the image means one of the elements inside your lens is misaligned.
Importance of using the right aperture and shooting conditions
Sunshine photos at f/8 should look as sharp as that lens will get, then you can compare.
Debate on the impact of lens features on image quality
You want to compress the perspective more and isolate the subject more.
Discussion on the importance of lens quality
It's all about the glass. Nice work.
Came here to say the same.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on using different film types
This is my first ever 35mm film camera and I am excited to use it.

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion on lens compatibility and selection
Which high end SLR should I buy? (Nikon vs Canon vs Minolta) I am currently trying to decide on a hi
Having access to all of Nikon’s modern and affordable f mount lenses is a huge plus for their systems.
I can't deny the pull of the Minolta if only to be 'cool' and 'hipster' with the less popular choice, lol.
F mount of EF mount will serve you well if you want nice glass on 35mm.
Discussion on lens compatibility with film cameras
I guess I may as well buy a body/lens combo.
Your DX lens will mount .. and work to some extent but since it is a crop sensor lens it will not fill the frame.
Looking for something with autofocus because my eyesight sucks and I remember having some blurry photos without autofocus.
AF and AF-S lenses will work with later film cameras... and can get excellent results.
Debate on camera choice for beginners
At the very least I would price shop all 3.
Hi any nikon is good, specially the old ones, in terms of image quality.
Discussion on lens compatibility for Nikon cameras
You want F-mount lenses that don't have a "DX" designation.
You want: - Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED or - Tamron SP 35mm f/1.8 Di VC USD.
Nikon on the other hand continued to evolve it’s lens mount, the F mount, which has been on the go since 1959.
You’ll find the Nikon AF D versions usually cheaper because they’re older models.
Discussion on lens compatibility and selection for Nikon
Canon have had 4 lens mounts in the EOS family because fuck consumers I guess.
Canon EF mount lenses will work great on the modern mirrorless offerings.
I really don't see a huge IQ/noise difference between them with 4K video.
Compatibility concerns for DX lenses on film cameras
Do all nikon lenses work on the Film Cameras?
DX lenses & G lenses won't work with most Nikon film cameras.
Old glass is awesome and often cheap.
Discussion on film camera types and lens compatibility
there are many kinds of nikon film cameras and many kinds of lenses.
Comments on user habits regarding reading manuals
Most photographers don't read the manual, until there is a road block, and then they read the manual cameras are fun but manuals are boring and dry reading.
Encouragement to seek help from camera shops
Honestly if you'd ask it at a camera shop you should be comfortable asking it here.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Debate on the value of pro-grade cameras
Buuuut, from the sense of a hobbyist photographer, the 5 does 95% of what the 9 will do for 10% of the price.
Debate about the relative quality of different brands' lens systems
I’ve had my XD-11 since 2013 and I love it, I have yet to find a downside or shortcoming.
Discussion about favorite lenses for Nikon F-mount cameras
I recently got my hands on an fm3a body and want to focus on mastering one lens first rather than swapping a lens every few frames.
Never thought the 2.0 was necessary, although I had one.
it's a perfect cheep alternative.
5.6 and on is really sharp and good.
Discussion on mirrorless vs SLR camera technology
Mirrorless is the new SLR. Consumers aren’t missing out on anything with this.
Nikon going mirrorless is smart, and I wouldn't be surprised if they release another 'retro' DSLR in another decade.
Speculation regarding Nikon's withdrawal from SLR development
This media article is only speculation and Nikon has made no announcement in this regards.
Discussion around the evolution of lens technology
I could never bear to part with the old 80-200.
