What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Access to a wide selection of Nikon lenses
Having access to all of Nikon’s modern and affordable f mount lenses is a huge plus for their systems.
F mount of EF mount will serve you well if you want nice glass on 35mm.
Good bokeh quality
Chromatic aberration aside, I love the bokeh!
Easy to correct chromatic aberration in post-processing
That's called chromatic abberation and it's pretty easy to remove in software.
But realistically, no one is looking at the photos at this magnification and unless you pointed it out I personally wouldn't have noticed it.
CA. Normal. One click fix.
If you have to zoom in 100 percent to see it. . .then no, it is not 'too much fringe.'
AF and AF-S lenses work with later film cameras
AF and AF-S lenses will work with later film cameras... and have full control and can get excellent results.
Great camera for various photography styles
Freaking GREAT camera. Both are super sharp, superfast AF, super reliable AF.
Highly recommend. I’m using mine in a more professional way, and the results are great for studio or location portrait work.
Allows for greater lens options, including vintage
The D7200 is a great camera and the focus drive means your lens options are greater including some great vintage and FX lenses if that’s your thing.
Good for both auto and manual shooting
If sticking to Auto mode, you are missing out on a lot of the features of this camera body.
Easy to learn and use for beginners
Is it a GOOD camera. Yes. Yes it is.
Can’t wait to start playing with it!
Compact size makes it easy to carry
It’s fairly small, so it’s easy to take everywhere.
Great color quality
I have the 24mm 2.8 D and it’s very good.
it also had much better colors and contrast than the FX 35 1.8 lens.
Affordable price point
I love the color and the price and auto focus for that lens and use it on a D3500.
Wide compatibility with vintage lenses
Vintage Nikon F glass is abundant, fairly affordable and generally remains in good condition after decades of use.
But man, using lenses I bought literally 35 years ago *on my Z cameras*? It does kinda trip me out!
Good optical quality for the price
Of the Japanese brands I’d probably say Nikon in terms of quality AND breadth of available lenses…
High image quality with compact lenses
It’s incredibly capable in a very compact package. A real gem.
You will notice an improvement in almost every aspect of image quality.
Unique features in Nikon lenses enhance creativity
wow, that is such a cool feature built into the lens. Knowing it has a "gimmick" feature but still works incredibly well without it makes it a real attractive thing to add to the arsenal eventually.
Versatile lens options for various photography styles
Once you shoot that 35mm lens, you'll never look at the 50mm f/1.4 the same way again.
Stunning image quality
Stunning image quality, quick enough auto focus and incredibly sharp wide open.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Pro-grade cameras may be overpriced for minimal advantages
from the sense of a hobbyist photographer, the 5 does 95% of what the 9 will do for 10% of the price.
Chromatic aberration can be pronounced at wide apertures
the 85 f/1.4G has quite a bit of CA for an optic in its price range.
You'll pricer lenses with much worse example of C.A.
Limited functionality compared to newer models
If you were to stick with that beginner line you'd be better off picking the EM's replacement, the Nikon FG.
DX lenses & G lenses won't work with most Nikon film cameras.
Do your research before spending any money, if you're unfamiliar with film photography and pre-digital Nikons.
Certain Nikon film cameras require physical aperture control rings not present on some lenses.
Old glass is awesome and often cheap. But if your camera body is fancy and you wanted fast autofocus this might be a problem for you.
Some older lenses lack modern features
I used the 28mm series E for years, but it’s really garbage. Ha!
Limited compatibility with certain camera models
It’s crazy good but requires more effort than usual to get the most out of it.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on lens types
You want: Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED.
Best priced option for you would be an AF-D lens.
Historical changes in lens mount systems
Nikon on the other hand continued to evolve it’s lens mount, the F mount, which has been on the go since 1959.
Discussion about favorite Nikon lenses for specific photography styles.
What is your favorite F-mount Nikon lens for 35mm slr? As the title says I’m curious what your favor
Never thought the 2.0 was neccessary, although I had one.
it's a perfect cheep alternative.
5.6 and on is really sharp and good.
Mention of features in old Nikon film cameras
It is much smaller than an F100 and of course gives a more vintage experience using it.
This thing cost probably $300+ to manufacture 20 years ago and looks like it will last a century.
Discussion about the Nikon F6 as a modern SLR camera
Hoping to do my buddies camera justice!
This is the greatest 135 film camera ever made.
Comment on personal experience with a lens
I have one of those It's amazing

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about Nikon's possible withdrawal from SLR camera market
Nikon is reportedly dropping out of the market for SLR cameras.
Mirrorless is the new SLR.
This media article is only speculation and Nikon has made no announcement in this regards.
Nikon going mirrorless is smart, and I wouldn't be surprised if they release another 'retro' DSLR in another decade.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Lens compatibility with film cameras
I guess I may as well buy a body/lens combo.
Your DX lens will mount .. and work to some extent but since it is a crop sensor lens it will not fill the frame.
Looking for something with autofocus because my eyesight sucks and I remember having some blurry photos without autofocus.
Ken Rockwell's facts are reliable, even if his opinions and photographs are bad.
Discussion about Nikon lens compatibility
New to Nikon - lens compatibility? How do I figure out which lenses work on which bodies?
Probably the best contribution to photography from Ken Rockwell, was this Nikon lens compatibility chart.
Basically every Nikon uses the Nikons F mount.
For manual focus lenses which it sounds like you have there are really only two types you need to worry about: AI and Pre-AI.
Discussion on the D7200's capabilities for intermediate users
I’ve been into photography for over a decade now. By no means a professional - but I appreciate the art of a good shot.
Discussion on the best Nikon models for beginners
For being a first camera, yeah, it's a safe bet.
the important part is the film and the lens, so i recommend searching for the hashtag of the camera or lens.
Compatibility between DX and FX lenses
DX lenses tend not to have a low apertures because of their size, so finding the 35mm f/1.8 is almost definitely full frame but just double check.
There is a 35mm 1.8 DX lens, so make sure it’s not that one.
Discussion on lens mount compatibility
Canon have had 4 lens mounts in the EOS family because fuck consumers I guess.
Canon EF mount lenses will work great on the modern mirrorless offerings.
I really don't see a huge IQ/noise difference between them with 4K video.
Any 35mm film should work with Nikon film cameras.
any 35mm film should work (i think, i am not an expert on the subject. i just use the basic kodaks and fujis)
Discussion about recommended Nikon DSLRs for landscape photography
Based on the photos, do you think that these lenses are a good choice for my style?
D850 is a fantastic DSLR (dare I say best photo dslr for Nikon?) but it's twice as expensive as the D810.
the Nikon 70-200 f/4 is almost as good optically and much less expensive.
Nailed it! Thank you so much.
Advice on using the manual for the Nikon F6
The F6 is ***the*** beast.
General tips for shooting with the Nikon F6
Camera does all the magic for you.
Discussion of lens compatibility with various Nikon models
You know what other lens would look good on that is a Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 push pull lens.
Honestly, I love that lens, I hate using it on my F3 though, it does look good on it though.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on camera choice influenced by brand popularity
I can't deny the pull of the Minolta if only to be 'cool' and 'hipster' with the less popular choice, lol.
Historical perspective on Nikon's lens lineup
the most important gear is between your ears. It's easy to get hung up on all this "best" business, but chasing gear forever won't get you great pics.
Nikon really nailed that gig though, but I'd still love to see a screw-mount AF adapter come along.
Discussion on preferences for Nikon film SLRs
But recently I've become interested to try shooting film, just for fun.
I own a f501 and i am very happy with it, it has auto focus functions and inbuild lightmeter, and i got it for 20$.
Discussion about personal lens preferences and experiences
I was stunned by how sharp the 60mm Micro can get.
IQ is fantastic, they're pro-builds and can take a beating.
Debate on the best focal lengths for portraits
You want to compress the perspective more and isolate the subject more.
Doesn’t the 135 make the portraits already too flat?
