What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Conditions leather well and repels water
It seems to condition the leather well and I can see it repel water.
Pleasant smell
Plus it smells good!
Works well on various leather types
Works great on couches, and car seats.
Does not alter leather color when used
Won't alter your color, so long as you stay on top of it.
Conditions leather well and restores original color
I usually don’t care about darkening my leather, but I like the look of the Bronco and would like to maintain the appearance as much as I can.
conditioning it will return it to its original darker tone.
Obenauf's leather oil and heavy duty LP will darken it.
Effective for conditioning leather
If it were me I’d use Obenauf’s leather oil.
I've used both products and can vouch for their effectiveness.
Looks like LP is a happy medium between oiling your boots and using Sno Seal.
Conditions and enhances color of leather
Mink oil or Obenauf's? I've used mink oil for every leather boot I've owned, but I noticed my Nick's
One coat of Obenauf's permanently changed them to a darker brown, almost walnut color. I was shocked when it changed *that* much, but honestly I love that color even more than the tan.
I also kind of like how boots look when they get a bit of color change from being conditioned.
I like the color change.
Long-lasting effects on leather
Obenaufs for the builders and rangers.
Preferred over mink oil by some users
I like the obenaufs heavy duty LP wax more personally.
Effective for conditioning leather items
I’ve used it on all my Filson bridle leather with great, long lasting results.
Darkens leather effectively for preferred users
Obenauf’s darkened the left which I prefer, it also made the break in process go faster.
Obenauf's will drastically darken (and remain dark) leather.
Keeps leather healthy and prevents drying
It’s the best thing I’ve found for keeping leather healthy and to prevent drying.
Softens leather goods
The oil is really good for getting leather goods to be softer.
Enhances character of light leather
the light leather of the boot gains a lot of character from the application.
Does not require frequent application
This shit works. It definitely achieved what it's stated to do.
You definitely wont need to use it often.
Darkening effects eventually fade
I felt very guilty about it but now I am relieved that they will return to their original color in a few days.
it brought out the reddish hue in the formerly tan 1k's and they are quite beautiful now.
Advised to use sparingly for best results
you have to be a little sparing about how much you use.
All great replies.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
May not be suitable for fashion boots due to unattractive finish
the finish can be unattractive and it *might* cause dirt and dust to accumulate in creases.
Can darken leather more than expected
What do you mean by "ALL-THE-LEATHER"? Are you talking about soaking the leather through it's depth
Can darken roughout leather significantly
It will darken significantly. It will also smooth the roughout but just brush it after and the nap will stand up again.
I’d be nervous about putting anything on roughout.
Can cause delamination on heel stacked leather
You don’t want to use anything on your heel stacked leather it’s oak tanned and it hard for a reason.
May be too heavy-duty for casual use
It really is some heavy duty stuff.
May alter depth of color on some boots
I'm not a fan of what LP does to the depth of color on a lot of boots, but this seems like a good fit here.
Temporary darkening can occur with over-application
I really think you applied too much to these, but they should lighten back up again.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Interest in water protection performance of conditioners
Interesting to hear about Lexol lowering the water protection at lest in this sample.
LP has the benefit of making the leather very acid resistant, as well as protecting against a lot of other chemicals.
Discussion about conditioning versus waterproofing properties
the goal is to keep the leather supple and prevent/slow cracking and aging.
True conditioners tend to be more liquid and of a chemical composition that is more readily absorbed by the leathers than the waxes present in LP.
Discussion about oils in leather and their effects
I don't think it's a bad thing to condition your leather once or twice a year.
Variability in leather care based on type
the Obenaufs Wax seems really to work well on very dried out leathers that start creasing which you want to rejuvenate before they start cracking.
Analogy comparing leather to skin in terms of care
Technically skin is attached to a body, takes extra steps to become leather.
Discussion about testing different leather oils
I'm partial to Obenauf's. It's easy to apply and I know it won't have adverse effects such as stitch rot.
Auto-upvote. Great work here. Nothing better than some personal experimenting.
If you heat the shoes... they'll melt and soak up that mink oil a lot better.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about conditioning leather heel stacks
Looking to get something for my leather heel stack to condition and protect it.
Curiosity about different uses of leather products
I love the change of color you got there, what kind of use do you get out of the journeyman?

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion around cleaning and conditioning routine
Nice little kit!
this kit would probably be my go to for all of my work leathers.
Discussion on roughout leather care
Roughout leather care? I went to local cobbler asking about roughout leather care but he didn't have any solid advice.
Huberd's does not appear to affect the nap on my boots much like neastfoot oil and the other oils.
Condition from the inside if you want to maintain nap.
Discussion about brand recommendations
I’ve heard that Filson recommends Obenauf’s for thier leather.
Discussion about cleaning methods for leather care
You should clean these with saddle soap and let them dry before conditioning or else you’re trapping all the dust/dirt/salt in there.
Saddle soap can pull dye and generally is too strong of a cleaner for general boot care.
I will certainly be taking better care of my classic Moc's and great care of my Iron Rangers.
Edit: very satisfying before and after though!
Curiosity about specific leather types and cleaning products
Would saddle soap be recommended for waxy commander suede too, or just traditional leathers?
im ready to be leather
Comparison with mink oil
atleast this new stuff should keep the leather nice.
Advice on treating mildew on leather
I think I've decided to go with vinegar/water for the mildew and neatsfoot for the oil.
Discussion on maintenance needs for Bean Boots
Come to think of it... I've used my bean boot since last year only for snow and rainy days and never taken care of it.
Curiosity about leather care outcomes
Did it ever lighten up?
I don't want to make the same mistakes I did with my CDBs and end up unhappy with the color.
Comparative analysis of Obenauf's products
The wax version is called *Heavy Duty* for a reason, it's purpose is for harsh conditions and weather.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about leather conditioner purpose
isn't the purpose of leather conditioner to infuse helpful, oil-based moisture into leather, protecting it from dryness, but not necessarily water-proofing it?
LP darkens and flattens leather colour significantly, and, for the most part, irreversibly.
They're just boots, so treat them like it.
LP treated boots typically look ugly anyways.
Controversy around the use of mink oil vs Obenauf's
Smelled awful, but did help keep them supple.
It's meant for actual work boots and for that it does quite well.
Discussion about over conditioning and tackiness
Over conditioned? Obenaufs heavy duty LP
Thanks, they are a bit tacky. Didn’t know there is such thing as over conditioning until I came here lol
Great stuff but lots of people don't know how to use it.
Discussion on alternative waterproofing solutions
Is the oil good for waterproofing or is there something better?
