Snoop's Take

The Petzl GRIGRI + Belay Device is designed for both learners and intensive climbers, offering a cam-assisted blocking mechanism that ensures safety and effective belaying. Users appreciate its smooth rope control and the ease of adjusting while climbing, with feedback highlighting that it provides a significant mechanical advantage, making it easier for belayers to manage the rope during climbs. However, some users have expressed concerns about its performance for top belaying and its weight for technical alpine routes. Considering the overall feedback, the Petzl GRIGRI is highly recommended for its intended use but may not be the best choice for specific climbing conditions like icy terrains or mountaineering.

Plus I belay from the top with autoblock not grigri

Positive Feedback

Rope slippage has been proven to reduce force, a lot. It's common knowledge.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.

Easy to adjust while climbing
The Petzl Connect Adjust - Everything you need to know // DAVE SEARLE
Best $70 I spent. Really useful for working routes. Makes it easy to go in hard on a bolt and adjust so you can brush holds and try some moves while your belayer can rest up and have a drink/snack.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Worse performance for top belaying
Rope slippage has been proven to reduce force, a lot. It's common knowledge.
Not suitable for icy conditions or mountaineering
Mountaineering? Use an arc of sorts. Many options, depending on a few details- but it is simple, light, and can do everything you need.
Heavy for technical alpine routes
Having said that a BD ATC Guide would be fine for the more technical routes, same with a reverso.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Preference for various belay techniques on thin ropes
Rappel Devices for 6mm Rope? What is/would be your preffered way to rappel on a 6mm rope like the petzl rad line?
Super Munter is my preference for 8mm and under. Easy to tie, no fumbling with extra gear.
Main thing is to test these in a safe spot and making sure you have manageable friction before you’re hanging off a cliff.
Black Diamond ATC Alpine Guide and two Petzl Attache carabiners works well
Discussion about essential climbing gear for beginners
Pretty sure it’s gonna be one of those hobbies where I’m always wanting/needing something, or some shiny thing is always begging to come home with me.
Consider a figure 8 style device with some sort of way to control friction and lock off on rappel.
Spoc is pretty much the same thing as a micro traxion, but way cheaper.
If you don't know what equipment you need, then you should take a Canyoneering course 1st.
Discussion on thin rope belay devices
My Petzl reverso works for rappelling with it if I use two carabiners (as Petzl recommends), but I know Mammut used to make a figure of 8 specifically for thin ropes.
there is a Edelrid micro jul and a bd atc guide specifically made for thin ropes.
Second vote for Munter or Supermunter, thinnest rope I've rappelled on is an 8mm static.
I've rapped on 6 mm cord with plenty of friction settings left to add.
Discussion on efficiency of different rappelling devices
But what are some reason to use / not use some assisted braking devices like a Grigri, or Mammut Smart 2.0 or Black Diamond ATC Pilot.
You don’t want an auto-lock for the same reason you don’t use a prussik back-up while abbing.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on lightest gear setups for rappelling
What is the lightest possible gear setup for an emergency rappel kit? I have a certain objective that will not require any ropes or technical climbing.
Super light rappel kits are generally only advisable for very competent climbers who are comfortable soloing routes that have known rappels or to facilitate a bail from technical terrain.
Thanks for the advice.
Extending is still a good idea, and using a third hand.
Preference for other belay techniques recommended by guides
guides from AMGA, IFMGA, ACMG (Canadian), ENSA (French guide school) and DAV (German) has recommended munter hitch or tube style device, and recommended against the use of Grigri bc of less rope slippage, and potential increased force on the top placement.
Risk mitigation is important, but it is possible to mitigate risk without handicapping solo climbers.
Preference for lightweight gear in climbing
What must-have tools do you carry on every multi pitch trad climb?
Beyond belay+anchor+rap+PAS materials, the only time I'm bringing anything else is on a 4+ pitch route.
I prefer a simpler approach. The vast majority of the time, I do not use cordellettes or extend my rappel.
Discussion on alternative belay devices for mountaineering
My preference would be the DMM pivot. It’s the same device but lowers much easier while in guide mode.
I love my reverso. Probably the best all around option I’ve used.
All the same functionality, just smoother.

Discussion on gear selection for climbing
Actually the thing that most annoy me is the harness, for this reason i think that something like the Petzl Altitude or Blue Ice Choucas could be useful to have almost everytime in the backpack.
just to be sure?
I wouldn't recommend it for trad climbing, since it won't be really comfortable if you have multiple falls.
Rappelling in it isn't pleasant. But as a backup harness... it's a no brainer.
Gear recommendations for new climbers
Gear needed for multi pitch and Rappelling
#1 most important piece of gear for multipitching/rappelling is someone who knows what they are doing and can teach you
I just need myself, my wisdom and the ol hip belay
Do single pitch rappelling first. If you want to do multi pitch, then you should buy the atc guide or the petzl pivot or something you can use to belay from above.
Discussion on shortage of Petzl leather belay gloves
Whatever site I go on they are stating no stock.
Are they that good?

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on rope slippage and safety
While I agree that it might reduce how common an accident is, it won’t eliminate it.
Discussion on personal gear choices and preferences
Just free solo stop spending money on gear or acting like you have friends to climb with
Nice you upgraded to the Ferrari of Grigri’s. Just clip it to your harness for some drip while flashing some gumbies project.
Idk, it just looks a little too....new. It's missing some grit, maybe try sanding a little off?
Discussion on belaying techniques and safety
Belay biners for use with full-body harness & preventing tri-loading
congratulations(?)
Wouldn't that still turn the belay device 90°? I just like the biner being horizontal and the ATC vertical.
Belaying like that is, however, pretty uncomfortable and she mostly belayed an also pregnant friend on toprope and tried to avoid lead belaying.
