Snoop's Take

This Pyrex Deep 9x13-Inch Glass Baking Dish with Lid is a versatile kitchen workhorse built for baking, serving, and storage. Designed for use in ovens, microwaves, freezers, and even on the go, it offers a deep design that accommodates multiple layers of food for hearty meals. Consumers have expressed a mix of admiration and alarm. On one hand, users rave about its functionality – one even noted, "Using the lid as a base is so handy!" – and appreciate the reduced dishwashing efforts on Taco Tuesdays. On the other, a chorus of voices warns of modern safety pitfalls with shattering risks and “exploding pyrex” horror stories. The debate is as layered as the casseroles it’s meant to hold, merging nostalgia for vintage dependability with scathing critiques of new manufacturing choices. Our expert verdict is caveated but cautiously positive: if you’re a longtime fan of Pyrex and are diligent about avoiding rapid temperature changes, this dish remains a practical choice in its category. However, prospective buyers should be aware of the modern criticisms regarding thermal shock safety before taking the plunge.

Or then just Pyrex oven glassware, it’s cheap and very good at least here in Europe.

Positive Feedback

Today, my brand new pyrex roasting tray EXPLODED in my hands while I was taking it out of the oven.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Affordable and reliable Pyrex glassware
Or then just Pyrex oven glassware, it’s cheap and very good at least here in Europe.
I would go with a glass or ceramic baking dish (also called casserole dish).
We’ve really cut down on washing dishes, especially on Taco Tuesdays.
FYI, if y'all have a Costco membership, they have an all glass Pyrex set with oven safe glass+silicone lids for $50 online. Skip the aftermarket middle man markup.
Broiler safe performance for casseroles up to moderate temperatures
Pulling a 13x9 cast iron dish out of the oven just seems like an accident waiting to happen, but it might be my only option if there arent' any ceramic ones out there that are safe up to 550.
but my company favorite is an enamel on steel baker from the Dansk Kobenware line.
Safe and effective in air fryer use
I put glass pyrex in the airfryer a few times without any problems to reheat left overs.
My Pyrex is old. It was my Nan's, then my Mum's and now it's mine.

Modern Pyrex safety concerns and explosion risks due to change in glass composition
Today, my brand new pyrex roasting tray EXPLODED in my hands while I was taking it out of the oven.
I stopped buying Pyrex altogether, got rid of my bakeware at garage sales, and only still have one measuring cup but refuse to use it for hot liquids or the microwave.
I've had two explode two decades ago so well before it was "widely known" though.
I refuse to use modern day glassware after a baking dish shattered in the oven and then Pyrex tried to blame me for not treating it gently when I asked for a refund.
Modern Pyrex safety concerns: risk of shattering due to thermal shock and high heat exposure
I would recommend OXO over Pyrex (and Anchor) because OXO uses borosilicate, which has *drastically* better thermal shock resistance than the strengthened soda lime glass used by Pyrex (on most of their consumer products), which has the potential to catastrophically fail when exposed to extreme temperature changes.
The one benefit of Pyrex's tempered is that they do have a bit more impact resistance than borosilicate, but you sacrifice a HUGE amount of thermal shock resistance for that (and Pyrex's choice to stop using borosilicate is unquestionably one made due to costs.)
The new formula after world kitchen acquired them is absolute crap.
That sucks it definitely doesn’t work as implied.
Risk of explosion and shattering due to thermal shock or rapid temperature changes
They can pop sometimes, generally from either thermal shock (very big temperature changes) or from getting too hot.
So they are definitely prone to explode quite often
rapid temperature change will explode pyrex
She took it out and set it in the sink and then turned on the water!
Plastic lids are prone to cracking over time
Now, do the 2nd smartest thing. Buy the replacement lids you will need for these in silicone.
I buy them up for cheap at Goodwill (no lids or cracked lids) and order replacement lids online.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Admiration for vintage Pyrex Visions cookware design and aesthetics
Design-wise, the late-century, space-age design is glorious and will, one day, be a coveted design classic.
I love my visions set. I haven't cooked that much with the skillet, but it looks like it'll do a good job.
I have a good sized corning collection. They work great, I find the skillet sticks less than a normal metal pan, but not as good as teflon.
Just stumbled upon a set at a flea market for $30!! Lol I know some of this kind of stuff is valuable in today's market, so I grabbed it on a whim.
Vintage Pyrex is valued for both display and everyday use
I have display pieces I would never use as well as bowls and casseroles I use on the regular.
They make any weeknight dinner a touch more fancy and nostalgic- and when done, they are displayed instead of being hidden in a dark cupboard
My horizon blue and butterprint looks great and I make food with them all the time.
I have display ones, ones I use to cook, and then it goes all the way down to the dishwasher damaged ones used for cat food bowls.
Admiration for vintage Pyrex design and aesthetics
Man the UK and Australia have some cool Pyrex!!!
See I think the US Pyrex is so lovely!! The pink daisies, the lovely duck egg blue snowflakes, the coral coloured gooseberry! We can’t get them over here =)

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Effective techniques for removing stuck food from Pyrex dish
I’d set it out for an hour or two (maybe more) and set it in a slightly larger dish filled with hot water to melt the outermost layer of chocolate to melt a bit.
Rocky Road saved (and more importantly my favorite dish for crumble)!
Run a butter knife around the edge, flip upside down, and thump on the counter a few times
I would let it come up to room temp and then stick the bottom of it in a bowl of warm (not hot) water to veryyyy slightly melt it and allow it to pop out

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Manufacturing differences and vintage vs modern Pyrex quality
Today I learned you can buy old-school borosilicate glass Pyrex in the USA. It's just rebranded under the brand Ocuisine which is also from France.
Just a heads up, here in Europe the Pyrex is still borosilicate (made in France) in case anyone here is worried.
It's been a while since I brushed up on my Pyrex history, but wasn't old borosilicate Pyrex made by Corning in New York?
I have lots of vintage PYREX and Corning Ware. One of my glass measuring cups is about 50 years old.
