What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Cuts through crusty bread easily
It cuts through the crust like butter and gives perfectly even slices.
Provides perfectly even slices
It's good at making really thin slices for chunchy/crispy jerky.
I immediately made a batch of Italian beef using this instead of the shredding method—immediate improvement in quality.
Cuts a variety of foods easily
If I had to replace it tomorrow I'd make sure it was just a little bit heavier so it won't move when moving the meat back and forth.
Really love having it for cutting bacon, roasts, hams etc. Game changer for slicing venison and eye of round for making jerky!
It’s a game changer, slices everything as thin as I want it, easy to clean, it’s light and can store easy.
I got the one from Lea valley, and it’s awesome! I had been looking for a meat slicer for awhile and
Great for homemade meats
It's great if that's what you really need!
Easy to clean
Die cast everything, solid and cleans up easy.
Handles a variety of foods easily
It seriously handles any job you can throw at it…even semi-frozen meat.
Versatile for various foods
Not all Costcos will slice your turkey.
You can also do veggies too - perfect for onions and tomatoes for example.
It doesn't have to be just for store bought meats though.
Will they slice the blocks of cheese as well ?
Saves money on deli meats
It works great for my deli meats and cheeses. And the main reason I bought it, is to make big batches of smoked jerky that I separate In vacuum sealed bags.
OP is clearly happy with the purchase and it reduces costs by letting them slice meat, cheese, and vegetables for themselves, not just "meat specifically from Costco".
Perfect for homemade meals
One of my favorite things to do, is perfectly roast a standing rib roast when they go on special at $3.90/lb then debone it, let it cool and fridge for it to firm up a bit then slice for roast beef sandwiches.
There's many uses for deli slicers beyond just slicing deli meat. For instance, it's perfect for slicing homemade bacon.
Provides even thickness when used gently
Just be gentle with it to get slices that are about equal in thickness.
It's not too bad as long as you don't have it set super thin though.
Cost-effective for homemade deli meats
I've been using this for years. Not for dehydrating, but for roasting our own chicken or turkey breast and making our own deli meat for sandwiches for $1/lb or less, instead of 5x or more the cost.
Smooth blades give better results than serrated ones
Slicers that use smooth blades are more expensive but give better results.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Difficult to slice bread without a slicer
Really annoyed overall, haven't cut myself cooking since I was like 18.
Nice bread.
Cleaning the slicer is time-consuming
You'll spend more time cleaning it after your done than it's gonna take slicing by hand.
Difficult to clean thoroughly
They are also quite difficult to clean throughly. Sooooo many nooks and crannies on most models.
It was a bitch when you had like 8 things to prep, but it ensured there was zero cross contamination at all.
Potential for serious injuries
whatever you get, make sure you get some meat-cutters gloves! Slicers aren't only dangerous because they're sharp, they're notorious for causing bad infections even from small nicks
Yeah, be super cautious. I used to work at a deli and a coworker shaved off the skin (flesh deep) off the side of their palm on one of these while cleaning it.
ouch! True though and they need to be VERY thoroughly cleaned, especially when used for meat and cured meats, the latter can have listeria especially.
Takes up a lot of space
These are not cheap, they take up *a lot* of space, and they're a huge PITA to clean up.
Serrated blades create uneven cuts
never buy a serrated blade meat slicer

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Preference for larger blades in commercial use
I agree with the poster who recommends 10" min. The smaller ones really limit you.
Interest in high-end slicers for frozen meat
I know my local Mongolian BBQ does this with an electric slicer, I just don't know how powerful/expensive I need to go.
Preference for non-serrated blades for better meat slicing
am very happy.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Grocery stores can shave meat
Don't buy a whole slicer. Also that deli sucks, literally any grocery store deli will do it without a blink of an eye.
Alternative methods for slicing
Couldn’t you use a mandolin? I’ve never sliced meat with one before but my simple caveman brain thinks it might work
Discussion about freezing meat for slicing
The way this is typically done is: semi-freeze the meat, then run on a deli slicer at the thinnest setting.
Discussion on alternative slicing methods
Yes, we get get pork loins sliced so we can pound them out into pork chops.
When I worked the deli of a chain grocer, we'd do it if the meat was bought within that same trip at that store and the package had not been opened yet to minimize anything suspect getting on the slicers.
Discussion about knife sharpening techniques
How to sharpen a wusthof super slicer? As title says, need advice on getting and keeping the edge on this German blade, thanks!
Dr Ericksson has all the knife answers. My only comment is that it will either become a sharpened bread knife or a sharpened ham slicer knife depending on how you sharpen it and how many times you sharpen it.
Will try, thanks!
Preference for frozen meat when slicing
it's so much easier to slice meat when it's frozen.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion about various brands and models of slicers
Super easy to clean versus my commercial slicers.
Mention of other kitchen gadgets taking up space
Honestly, I have so many kitchen gadgets that it takes up so much room.
Interest in the cost-effectiveness of the slicer
No respectable deli would slice raw meat on the deli meat slicers.
Concerns about electric slicers versus manual methods
I don't really trust amazon reviews a whole lot, but I also don't need some $2000 professional slicer.
I tried an electric slider and unless the meat is partially frozen it never worked very well but maybe I got a dud.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Electric slicers are common in Germany
I also learned having a bread slicer is a pretty common household item in Germany, which I love.
The best thing since sliced bread is an electric knife for slicing bread.
Electric knives have fallen out of fashion
Still only $20 to $40 bucks and will slice through bread easily as well as meats or whatever.
Concerns about commercial vs. consumer-grade slicers
I would probably search through some industrial restaurant supply stores rather than amazon.
Worlds different. I use it to slice turkey breast, ham, roast beef, bacon, beef for jerky.
Perception that all slicers under $100 will be low quality
I feel like all slicers, other than a sharp knife, are gonna suck if they're under $100.
Just search ( jerky cutting board ) on Amazon.
Concerns about storage and food safety
Not to mention the storage of all that damn turkey.
I don’t work everyday so the last day is sometimes on the border of still being ok to eat.
