Snoop's Take

The TP-Link AC1900 Smart WiFi Router (Archer A8) is a dual-band router that delivers high-speed MU-MIMO wireless connectivity for smooth streaming, gaming, and everyday browsing. It supports guest WiFi and parental controls, ensuring that your home network stays both fast and family-friendly. Community feedback paints a picture of a generally reliable device, with users exclaiming things like "Never had a problem with." However, some voices in the debate express frustration over connectivity issues when multiple IoT devices are added and the limitations of OneMesh support, while critiques of firmware and hardware revision practices add a hint of cynicism. The sentiment is a mix of admiration for its robust, long-lasting performance and annoyance over recurring technical hiccups. Overall, the discussions reveal a product that performs well under typical conditions, although it may not satisfy the most tech-intensive use cases. Given the overall balance of praise for its dependable everyday performance against concerns about firmware and connectivity glitches, the TP-Link Archer A8 is recommended for users seeking a solid, cost-effective router solution in a competitive category.

Mine has been reliable so far haven't had any issues and I've never had to reset it.
TP-Link is more reliable , more available, more serviciable than Netgear.
They last so long, I have a TP-Link Deco in a hard-to-reach place and I haven't had to take it out in 4 years.
Responsive technical support and firmware updates
I'm really sold on tp link. The whole experience was very quick and they were extremely polite and helpful.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Connectivity issues with multiple IoT devices
But I started to have problem with it when I added more IoT devices and Sonos to my room.
OneMesh supports only a single router
You can't use two routers in a OneMesh network.
Infrequent firmware updates
My router (AX6000) seems rock solid for the past couple months in terms of coverage, no drops, etc.
I’d say TP-Link and Eero lead the pack, with ASUS close behind.
Inadequate firmware updates and security vulnerabilities
Tp-link’s software is like Swiss cheese when it comes to security and even when notified of glaring issues they never resolve them.
tp-link routers have like... the crappiest of firmware out there, but are one of the best sets of consumer devices that all you have to do to get openwrt is just upload a file to them, and BOOM.
Moved to OpenWRT ever since.
TPLink devices are for casual use.
Inconsistent hardware specifications (port speed issues)
In my country, Argentina, Mikrotic was more than the double and hard to find until this years.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Technical discussion on TP-Link business-grade equipment
TP-Link business grade equipment
Sounds like a misconfigured device and a shitty firewall.
Don't get me wrong, TPLink has a bad reputation for some gear, like their routers and access points, but these particular models we've had good luck with.
If it's blasting multicast, either igmp was not properly configured or the upstream protocol and device generating the traffic was working as intended.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Ease of flashing with OpenWRT for customization
That's why you flash the router with Openwrt or something else
The only thing I have to recommend RP-Link routers is that they were really good for flashing with that custom router firmware a few years (maybe 10) ago.
Just buy a TP-Link that can run OpenWRT and done.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Security benefits of installing OpenWRT
you are much safer running OpenWrt on a router made by any manufacturer - not just TP-Link.
I definitely didn't want to continue using the router with the default software.
I'd prefer a GL.iNet router but I'm biased.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Invasive Home Shield DNS traffic and forced DNS settings
Here is the kicker though, I have the Avira / Home Shield services completely turned off... The router doesn't care, and sends ALL your traffic to be "analyzed" anyhow.
Who greenlit shipping this? If non-subscribers still send EVERY request to TPLink aren't wasting a tremendous amount of resources unless they plan to do something else with the data?
I also have tried blocking / redirecting the DNS queries, but this results in the router getting stuck in retry loop (thousands of requests a minute), and a big spike in router CPU usage as a side effect.
But yah this "feature" is very invasive.
Potential regulatory and security concerns for TP-Link routers
Maybe in the near future they will only allow state approved routers. Just for „safety“.
Gotta get your Federally Approved Router with a built in FreedomLibertyAntiCommunism chip that ensures no unwitting citizen ever accidentally views communism/socialism propaganda again.
This is the router equivalent of plugging a windows XP computer directly to the internet.
TP link is inches from being banned in the US fyi.
Geopolitical and brand ownership concerns
It’s really not about security “as is”, it’s about the fact that this brand is based in China, and is therefore subject to Chinese law.
Every router has some kind of vulnerability, whether known about or not. No device is or ever will be 100% secure.
TP-Link China is separate from TP-Link Singapore/US now (as of 2022).
If they go through with it, it will be ban on the sale of TP-Link routers, not a ban on just owning one.
Firmware update reliability concerns
Every firmware update is like a game of Russian roulette.
