Snoop's Take

The TP-Link AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router is a state-of-the-art networking device engineered to deliver blazing fast wireless connections for gaming, streaming, and everyday use. It leverages tri-band WiFi 6E technology to provide speeds up to 5400 Mbps, ensuring robust performance even with multiple devices online. User sentiment is a mixed bag: while many voices proclaim its rock-solid performance with remarks like “Never had a problem with.” and praise its responsive technical support, others are quick to lambaste invasive features such as the HomeShield telemetry and complex DNS configurations. Some users laud its out-of-the-box simplicity and blazing speed while others point to potential privacy and firmware issues. The debate is lively, reflecting both high expectations and equally high frustrations in one breath. In conclusion, if you’re after a router that promises and largely delivers high-speed, stable connectivity for demanding environments, the TP-Link AXE5400 is a worthy contender in its category—provided you’re comfortable navigating its more intrusive security and configuration quirks.

Never had a problem with.

Positive Feedback

Here is the kicker though, I have the Avira / Home Shield services completely turned off... The router doesn't care, and sends ALL your traffic to be "analyzed" anyhow.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Reliable performance and stability
Never had a problem with.
Mine has been reliable so far haven't had any issues and I've never had to reset it.
I don't see any of this TP-Link hate you are mentioning.
Haven't seen the hate posts.
Responsive technical support and firmware updates
The whole experience was very quick and they were extremely polite and helpful.
Customizable TP-Link app features
Tp link app is loaded to the gills with customizable functions and features to Fine-tune your network.
Reliable business-grade equipment with regular updates
With these particular models at least, they do an excellent job of releasing regular software upgrades and the software is very solid as far as we've seen.
Flexible deployment in AP mode
I have not been disappointed with the TP-Link AXE95 being used in AP mode.
Easy integration with OneMesh extender
I will be going with the AX11000 if it's on sale at my local warehouse and adding a TP-Link OneMesh range extender simply to have a wired connection to my gaming PC.
High‑speed performance and low ping
Fastest router I've had. On every test, I get 1054/55 and 8-12ms ping.
Great value price
This is the cheapest 6E router I have ever seen !
6GHz band performance in congested networks
I’m in a really congested network environment so I’m looking forward to the 6ghz band.
Simple out-of-the-box operation
I want to use something out of the box and it was priced right.
I want it to be simple.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Invasive Home Shield sends traffic to third party servers
Here is the kicker though, I have the Avira / Home Shield services completely turned off... The router doesn't care, and sends ALL your traffic to be "analyzed" anyhow.
Who greenlit shipping this? If non-subscribers still send EVERY request to TPLink aren't wasting a tremendous amount of resources unless they plan to do something else with the data?
The fix really needs to come from TP-Link.
But yah this "feature" is very invasive.
Difficult DNS configuration for custom DNS usage
very frustrating as I have to resort to using the DHCP method only, which means PiHole never catches any of these router pings :(
It seems they purposely built this to hide the router itself from PiHole
it's insane.
the appearance must just be slightly different with dynamic vs static IP settings.
Connectivity issues with multiple IoT devices
But I started to have problem with it when I added more IoT devices and Sonos to my room.
Limited OneMesh support: only one router allowed
You can't use two routers in a OneMesh network.
Unreliable performance and poor support experience
Honestly it is based on anecdotal experience of hardware from both manufacturers more often then not failing or having horrible performance with shit support from the manufacturer.
Inconsistent hardware revisions
TPLInk routers change hardware silently all the time, different revision might have a very different hardware.
Dysfunctional 2.4 GHz antenna
C6v3 performs better bandwidth-wise, but has one dysfunctional 2.4 GHz antenna.
Outdated security patches risk botnet exploitation
This is the router equivalent of plugging a windows XP computer directly to the internet.
Limited range of 6E band
the biggest issue is that it has a relatively short range to other wifi bands so you'd have to be in the same room and potentially right next to the router to get a significant speed bump.
Insecure and unpatched stock firmware
Tp-link’s software is like Swiss cheese when it comes to security and even when notified of glaring issues they never resolve them.
I realized that my tp-link devices were not getting updates for more than a year.
tp-link routers have like... the crappiest of firmware out there, but are one of the best sets of consumer devices.

Discussion on chipset differences in TP-Link routers
Ax55 has a Qualcomm Chip. Ax53 has intel.
Geopolitical and data security discussions
I say you should keep it for now.
If they go through with it, it will be ban on the sale of TP-Link routers, not a ban on just owning one.
Say that TP-Link is banned, why would you want to change your router?
See if your router supports openwrt, with replaces the original firmware.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Ease of flashing alternative firmware (OpenWRT)
That's why you flash the router with Openwrt or something else
it can be a double-edged sword though… makes them easy to root and flash with OpenWRT or other Open Source firmware
Just slap open wrt on them
Yes, it's easy to install openwrt.
Creative installation modifications
Cut a small hole through the wall and put the router inside of it.
It's the sheer fact that the in-wall wire and plumbing situation is something that I don't want to touch.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Price fluctuation and deal awareness
if its going to be $100 than its surely sweet deal.
Is this the model you paid $170 for?
Budget hardware with limited chipset options
So the truth is that all these cheap switches are based on the same very limited set of chipsets.
Beware of third-party seller scams
Use common sense - if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
OpenWrt offers improved security over default firmware
IMO, you are much safer running OpenWrt on a router made by any manufacturer - not just TP-Link.
I definitely didn't want to continue using the router with the default software.
I'd prefer a GL.iNet router but I'm biased.
Political and regulatory concerns about TP-Link routers
Maybe in the near future they will only allow state approved routers.
Gotta get your Federally Approved Router with a built in FreedomLibertyAntiCommunism chip.
Concerns over TP-Link's ties to Chinese government
It’s really not about security “as is”, it’s about the fact that this brand is based in China, and is therefore subject to Chinese law.
