Snoop's Take

The TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Router Archer AX55 is a modern wireless gateway built to deliver gigabit speeds and reliable connectivity for home users. It combines advanced features like OFDMA, MU-MIMO, and VPN support, ensuring smooth streaming, gaming, and secure network traffic. Community feedback reveals a polarized stance. Many users laud its performance—one even noted, 'I have over 50 wireless devices connected at home'—and value for money, yet a significant number are incensed by intrusive features such as forced DNS traffic and firmware limitations. The ranting over OneMesh restrictions and security vulnerabilities underscores a debate where benefits are sharply countered by real-world annoyances. In conclusion, while the Archer AX55 offers impressive speed and coverage for demanding environments, its trade-offs in customization and security updates may hamper its appeal. For those prepared to overlook these caveats in exchange for high performance, it remains a worthy option in its category.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Reliable performance and good value
don't have anything to complain and I have over 50 wireless devices connected at home.
the router really gives a lot of value (4 ports, Wi-Fi 6, ODMA, 1x USB).
way better than the router that thr isp gave.
Reliable performance and longevity
*My whole house has TP-Link products,* ***why?*** They last so long, I have a TP-Link Deco in a hard-to-reach place and I haven't had to take it out in 4 years.
Use your gear as long as you want to.
Trusted security as confirmed by experts
I have zero issues with it. There aren't any other home routers that I'm aware of set up with the ease of management for a built in Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) at a reasonable price.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Invasive Home Shield network traffic causing unwanted third‐party DNS requests
Was surprised to find 80K + requests (in 24 hours) out to an Avira 'Safe Things' subdomains.
Who greenlit shipping this?
The fix really needs to come from TP-Link.
But yah this 'feature' is very invasive.
Limited DNS customization causing router lockouts when using custom DNS (e.g. PiHole)
very frustrating as I have to resort to using the DHCP method only, which means PiHole never catches any of these router pings :(.
It seems they purposely built this to hide the router itself from PiHole.
as soon as I try to change the Wan dns to pihole it completely locks me out and have to reset the router, it's insane.
Default firmware security concerns and need for timely fixes
I definitely didn't want to continue using the router with the default software.
Just put TP-Link on your blacklist for future purchases.
Connectivity issues with multiple IoT devices under heavier network loads
But I started to have problem with it when I added more IoT devices and Sonos to my room.
OneMesh support limitations
Can you set up OneMesh with two AX55 routers?
Not possible.
Lack of Link Aggregation
I'm far more likely to use Link Agg than OneMesh.
Security vulnerabilities and infrequent firmware updates
I've seen tp-link stuff get put on the market, and not receive much at all in regards to updates/fixes.
These things are good as wireless devices, but not much else in terms of security.
I know about many TP-Link routers which didn’t get updates since years and years ago.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Notable chipset differences noted between TP-Link router models
Ax55 has a Qualcomm Chip. Ax53 has intel.
TP-Link router app offers extensive customization
Tp link app is loaded to the gills with customizable functions and features to Fine-tune your network.
High-end TP-Link models demonstrate strong performance
Fastest router I've had. Super quick and easy to setup.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
OpenWrt installation offers improved security compared to default firmware
IMO, you are much safer running OpenWrt on a router made by any manufacturer - not just TP-Link.
Variability in hardware revisions affecting OpenWrt support
One of the best things you’ll ever do is use a rpi4, or a nanopi as your router and offload Wi-Fi to access points.
Consumer confusion over TP-Link model differences and pricing
Personally, I am leaning towards the 7800 as I want the wifi6E which will help unclutter your wifi bands if you have a lot of devices or are in close proximity to your neighbors.
Though on papers ax11000 looks like power house...infact i do feel axe7800 is bit better (speed with in my home) than ax11000 if i have to say one of them.
If you have few 6e devices then it still make sense to go for axe7800.
Variable pricing and promotional deals
where did you find the Ax55 for $200aud??
Looks like it was a sale price at the time I wrote the review!
Just bought one myself, probably a bit overkill for the 100Mbps that my IPS provides but wanted something future proof.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
OneMesh network limitation: only one router can act as the primary router
You can't use two routers in a OneMesh network.
Unsure to understand your setup.
Mixed opinions on TP-Link brand reliability and support across different devices
Never had a problem with.
Not pro grade, obviously, but for the price and support I would 100% buy again.
Mine has been reliable so far haven't had any issues.
they are capable of producing a decent router-type device.
Firmware update frequency concerns
My router (AX6000) seems rock solid for the past couple months in terms of coverage, no drops, etc.
I actually think tplink is better with software and hardware than netgear so maybe don’t need as much updating.
I’d say TP-Link and Eero lead the pack, with ASUS close behind.
TP-Link routers considered more reliable than Netgear
TP-Link is more reliable , more available, more serviciable than Netgear and you don't have the need to pay to receive help by errors caused by the provider.
TP-Link is more reliable , more available, more serviciable than Netgear and you don't need to pay to receive help by errors caused by themselves.
Inexpensive TP-Link routers may have limited performance
I would not say they are 'good'. Routers have processors, ram, and storage in them, how good each of those are depends on how much money you can spend.
Mixed feedback on TP-Link business-grade equipment
Sounds like a misconfigured device and a shitty firewall.
Don't get me wrong, TPLink has a bad reputation for some gear, like their routers and access points, but these particular models we've had good luck with.
If you don't need the advanced features Juniper or Cisco or Brocade devices offer, a TP-link will do fine for the situation you describe.
Potential issues with handling high internet traffic on some TP-Link models
The AX21 router may not be hefty enough to handle the internet traffic.
General TP-Link firmware security and support concerns
This is the router equivalent of plugging a windows XP computer directly to to the internet.
Tp-link’s software is like Swiss cheese when it comes to security.
Companies have a responsibility to their customers to keep their devices updated security wise and to do the opposite is just negligent.
Debate over TP-Link's corporate ties and security reassurances
apparently, tplink systems (us) no longer has any ties with tplink China.
There's no actual evidence of spying or data harvesting, just owned by a company partially located in the chinchin.
Just because a company has 'offices' or a presence in China doesn't make them unsafe.
