Snoop's Take

The TP-Link Deco AX3000 WiFi 6 Mesh System is a next-gen networking solution designed to blanket large homes with fast, seamless coverage while replacing both a conventional router and extender. It supports up to 150 devices with WiFi 6 speeds, ensuring that streaming, gaming, and everyday browsing happen without a hitch. Engineered to cover up to 6500 sq.ft., it promises robust performance across multi-story houses. Feedback from users is a mixed bag; many praise the system’s reliability and simplicity, with one reviewer enthusing that “The X55s totally changed my WiFi in my house.” Others, however, are less kind, lambasting its intrusive HomeShield data collection and problematic DNS configurations. While the customization and Ethernet backhaul get nods of approval, the persistent theme of privacy concerns and security shortcomings leaves some users wary. The debate is vibrant, but the consensus rings clear on certain strengths and some glaring drawbacks. In conclusion, the Deco AX3000 is recommended for those who need expansive, high-speed coverage and value easy setup, but potential buyers should be aware of its invasive security features. If you prioritize performance and don’t mind tinkering with advanced settings, TP-Link’s offering holds its own in the competitive mesh market.

TP-Link is more reliable, more available, more serviciable than Netgear and you don't have the need to pay to receive help by errors caused by the provider.

Positive Feedback

Here is the kicker though, I have the Avira / Home Shield services completely turned off... The router doesn't care, and sends ALL your traffic to be "analyzed" anyhow.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Reliable performance and coverage
TP-Link is more reliable, more available, more serviciable than Netgear and you don't have the need to pay to receive help by errors caused by the provider.
Netgear = Nightmare Changed last year from Orbi to TP-Link and the difference is abismal. TP-Link
It's been great so far.
The X55s totally changed my WiFi in my house.
Customizable network settings
Tp link app is loaded to the gills with customizable functions and features to Fine-tune your network.
Effective Ethernet backhaul performance
I’m am using WiFi backhaul and it’s still great btw.
Easy setup and management
The deco mesh is super easy to set up. You literally just follow prompts on an app.

Invasive HomeShield Data Collection
Here is the kicker though, I have the Avira / Home Shield services completely turned off... The router doesn't care, and sends ALL your traffic to be "analyzed" anyhow.
Who greenlit shipping this? If non-subscribers still send EVERY request to TPLink aren't wasting a tremendous amount of resources unless they plan to do something else with the data?
I also have tried blocking / redirecting the DNS queries, but this results in the router getting stuck in retry loop (thousands of requests a minute), and a big spike in router CPU usage as a side effect.
But yah this "feature" is very invasive.
DNS Configuration Issues Blocking Custom DNS
It seems they purposely built this to hide the router itself from PiHole.
it's insane.
the appearance must just be slightly different with dynamic vs static IP settings.
Infrequent firmware updates
My router (AX6000) seems rock solid for the past couple months in terms of coverage, no drops, etc.
I actually think tplink is better with software and hardware than netgear so maybe don’t need as much updating.
I’d say TP-Link and Eero lead the pack, with ASUS close behind.
Poor stock firmware security and support
This is the router equivalent of plugging a windows XP computer directly to to the internet.
Tp-link’s software is like Swiss cheese when it comes to security.
That's why they're so cheap.
tp-link routers have like... the crappiest of firmware out there.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Security benefits of using OpenWrt on TP-Link routers
IMO, you are much safer running OpenWrt on a router made by any manufacturer - not just TP-Link.
I had no idea how easy it was to install & configure OpenWRT or I would have done it years ago.
I'd prefer a GL.iNet router but I'm biased.
Time to install dd-wrt or openwrt.
Hardware Spec Information
Ax55 has a Qualcomm Chip.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Ease of flashing with OpenWrt as an alternative
That's why you flash the router with Openwrt or something else
The only thing I have to recommend RP-Link routers is that they were really good for flashing with that custom router firmware a few years ago.
it can be a double-edged sword though… makes them easy to root and flash with OpenWRT or other Open Source firmware
Just slap open wrt on them
Security and privacy workarounds advice
If yes then I won't worry too much, you can install it later or now(if you want to experiment with it sooner).
set up a VPN on your computer so the data will be encrypted before the router ever sees it.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
OneMesh incompatibility with multiple routers
You can't use two routers in a OneMesh network.
Unsure to understand your setup.
Hardware revision variability affects OpenWrt compatibility
TPLInk routers change hardware silently all the time, different revision might have a very different hardware.
Inquiry on non‐subscription security software
Thank you, how is the software that stops malicious sights and what not?

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Positive experiences with TP-Link devices
Never had a problem with it.
For the price and support I would 100% buy again.
It is a lot better than my previous Linksys e1200.
They are capable of producing a decent router-type device.
Negative opinions on TP-Link reliability and support
Honestly it is based on anecdotal experience of hardware from both manufacturers more often then not failing or having horrible performance with shit support from the manufacturer.
If there's hate, it's not in here. I always recommend the TP-Link Archer C7, will probably recommend
But I started to have problem with it when I added more IoT devices and Sonos to my room.
Confusion Between HomeShield and Home Care Features
It's alarming they would force this traffic on their routers!
There do not seem to be very many devices that come with the feature yet.
Is 'Home Care' separate from 'Home Shield'?
They're two separate things.
Mixed opinions on business grade TP-Link equipment
With these particular models at least, they do an excellent job of releasing regular software upgrades and the software is very solid as far as we've seen.
If you don't need the advanced features Juniper or Cisco or Brocade devices offer, a TP-link will do fine for the situation you describe.
Geopolitical and security concerns regarding TP-Link routers
It’s really not about security 'as is', it’s about the fact that this brand is based in China, and is therefore subject to Chinese law.
Regulatory concerns regarding potential TP-Link ban
I say you should keep it for now.
If they go through with it, it will be ban on the sale of TP-Link routers, not a ban on just owning one.
Say that TP-Link is banned, why would you want to change your router?
